  1. Mine’s a Winchester 61, serial puts it at 1950:
  2. I'm in the same boat and did basically the same thing, but instead of buying stupid crap, my wife is a mizer/money hoarder. The first 10 years of marriage I didn't buy many guns or hunt much because I wanted to pay off all debt, and she was cool with that. After we'd accomplished that, I started spending money on guns and hunting, and about 10 years later, she still isn't really on board with it. Of course, now I realize I should have made hunting/shooting/gun buying a deal maker/breaker from the beginning.
  3. Second from left is a custom 375 Wby with a heavy Douglas barrel; gun on far right is a stock Rem 700 BDL .223 with heavy varmint barrel. Yeah, I didn't really start buying guns until I had family financial stuff pretty well addressed, but I like buying used classic guns that are depreciated out and actually appreciate at or above the level of inflation, so its really a conservative investment. My wife's eyes usually glaze over an she stops interrogating me about gun stuff when I start talking investment strategy.
  4. Heading to the ranch tomorrow for the weekend. I’m overpacking, but what the hell. Let’s get it on. Shotguns 28 g spanish SxS 16 g 1100 12 g Grandad’s Marlin pump Rifles .22 Grandad’s Winchester pump .223 5.56 suppressed 300 Win Mag 300 Ultra Mag 375 Weatherby Pistolas .22 Great Uncles Hi Standard .380 Colt Mustang .45 Springfield suppressed I just picked up the ultra mag today, going to give the ol shoulder a workout and see if I need to put a recoil reducer or a break on it.
  5. We had the same experience in Lampasas last year. I theorize the barometric pressure changes, etc associated with Harvey moved the birds North for awhile and the then they migrated later.
  6. Nice! I always think its going to suck sitting out in the blazing heat, but if I bring a bucket of ice cold drinks to my spot its never as bad as I think.
  7. I've been going back and forth on whether to feed cotton seed at our place, but to be honest, I've just reached my limit of shit I want to mess with. Maybe when we get done with the major improvements (cedar clearing, fence building, house renovations, tank building, road work, etc.) I'll have time for it.
  8. I think he might have gained a little spread since 2017 and added some mass all over. His G2s started leaning further back over time so they look shorter. Here’s side views from last year and this year:
  9. Here’s a progression of the wide 10. I think he was already 3 or 4 in 2016. I’m a little surprised he hasn’t added any points or more tine length over the last two years, he is pretty regular at the protein feeder.
  10. Shaquem Griffin's performance against Auburn was just unforgettable, right up there with Michael Dickson for my favorite of the bowl season, and both are Seahawks. Griffin may start week 1.
  11. Today I passed a poor boy ski boat that might be G650 approved, although I’ve never seen one with the white things stuck on the sides.
  12. One other year-over-year, here’s my probable target buck from 2016:
  13. Thanks! That wide 10 point is older, probably 5-6. He’s probably peaked out, but we have a nice little strain of wide rack genetics that I’ve been hesitant to hinder. Here he is in 2016: 2016 again with his nose in the feeder: Here he is in 2017: He ended up breaking off both brow tines last year before rifle season, which probably saved his hide. We have hunting pressure on about 50% of our perimeter. I really can’t ask for much more, because as you see, legal bucks are surviving. The other ranches don’t feed as well or provide as good of pasture conditions as we do, so we tend to hold deer pretty well on our place during feeding times.
  14. We made it out this afternoon, new rudder even stayed attached.
  15. I concur, doctor. The Belize incident happened right after they had passed a law saying all inshore boat drivers had to be native Belizian. The dude didn’t know one end of and outboard from the other and ran us into a dock at about 20 mph. (I was a passenger on a dive)
  16. Definitely no brag. No injuries, not taking on water, still under power = just an inconvenience. The bad wreck I was in was in Belize in the mid-90's and for a second or two I thought we might be in serious trouble, one of our group was injured.
  17. Yeah, it sucked, but I’ve been in worse boat wrecks. We were only going about 10 mph when we hit. Thank the Lord we weren’t taking on water fast or anything (rudder was sheared off at the hull), and I was able to steer us to that boat ramp you see in the photo using a wake board. Here’s a pic of the damage:
  18. Let us know if the eliminators help. I have exclusion cages on my corn spinners that keep the coons out. If you see deer on your place, you have enough deer to use the protein. If you only have the mechanism open for 1 minute twice a day, it just fills the feeder head, a total of maybe 5 pounds of feed. Deer really guzzle protein, they’ll finish that off in a day. I had custom hoppers built and I use the Hammer feeder mechanism, which is basically a timer, a linear actuator, and a gate valve: http:// http://www.thehammerfeeder.com I posted a few links to other timed protein feeders a few pages back. (All Seasons, Lamco, Krivoman) I’m a huge believer in timed protein. I don’t have the budget/time to feed free choice. I’ve heard guys say “if you don’t feed free choice you might as well not do anything.”, which I file away with a bunch of other nonsense deer management BS I’ve heard over the years. My low fence deer have made big improvements on timed protein.
  19. Solid limestone. This rock shelf is unmarked, I hadn’t been in this part of the lake before. I was 100+ yards off the shoreline, about where the red pin is:
  20. We’re back baby! New prop, shaft, rudder, mounting hardware, etc. Hope to get out this weekend.
  21. I need to fence the feeders off so I can move cattle to this side of the ranch as well. Going to have to cool off a little before I’m doing fence work though. Those chocolate beams with the ivory tips are nice on that buck! Are you in an antler restricted county?
  22. One other item of note - there were over 4000 pictures on the camera that is set close to the timed protein feeder, and there was not a single raccoon photo, and very few nighttime deer photos. That was over a two week duration. When I was feeding free choice, the bucks would be very nocturnal, and I would have hundreds of raccoon photos.
