Any recommendations for glass for my new AR-10 in .308? Planning just to have it on hand for pigs on the farm mostly under 100 yards.

Thinking about this one (, but I'm not an optics guy so I'm open to suggestions from someone who knows more than me.

I really like the Nikon FX1000 Black line of scopes.  Pretty much the highest end glass you can get from Nikon and they're all being liquidated cause Nikon is slowly phasing themselves out of the scope business.  I got the FX1000 4-16x FFP w/ illuminated mil reticle for like 500 dollars (normally $800) and its been as rugged and clear as my Vortex Viper PST. They make some lower power options that are even cheaper.

Isn't Kel-Tec Latin for cheap jam?

Despite their shitty manufacturing and distribution issues - Keltec pushes the envelope in their designs (which means reliability might not be as great)  Many of their more popular guns have quirks that can be worked around to make them run very well.  For example - the plastic mags on the PMR / CMR 30s tend to bulge when you shove 30 rounds of 22mag in them, which makes them less reliable.  If you load them to 25 rounds, they're great.  They recommend 40gr+ in their manuals for those guns now and the reports of FTF/FTE pretty much disappeared.  Their P32 and P3AT pocket guns were revolutionary for their size, width and weight and Ruger actually stole their design for the Ruger LCP.

They make odd stuff but its usually cool and unique to the market (mostly for fun)

I ordered the exact same thing back in December.  I got an email just a few hours ago that the stripped lower has shipped!!

    And now we wait.

I'm seeing 4-5 months on shipping of the upper kits.  My buddy ordered one in early August and its still pending. :|  I'm used to having to wait a long time for certain gun things.

  4. Academy gets their deliveries on mon/wed/fri at the two stores I go to.  There is often a line in the morning before they open but not a big one.  They also keep the commonly hoarded calibers like 223/90/40/22 and 300 up at the customer service desk to make it easier for the hoarders and scalpers to get in and out quickly.  i paid 84 bucks for 200 round battlepacks of green tip a month ago.

  5. Just went ahead and ordered a LaRue.  The Ultimate Upper kit is probably the best bang for buck you can find anywhere, from any A Tier AR builder right now.  Upper receiver, barrel, rail, brake, buffer assembly, RAT stock, LPK, MBT trigger - everything but the damn lower for 800 bucks.  Thats a no brainer regardless of lead times.

  6. I love me some Keltec / Grendel space guns.  I passed on their new 33round 22lr pistol the other day and immediately regretted it when I saw they make a sidefolding brace for it.  Their CMR30 is a blast to varmint hunt and plink with.

  7. If anyone is local to the Austin area and in desperate need for some hunting ammo - I can likely help out.  My suggestion is to hop on over to ammoseek and just spend the money on 200+ rounds of hunting ammo in bulk so you don't have to go through this shit again after the next school shooting.

That's brilliant. Trading something you won't need for something you can keep forever is brilliant.

I've got ammo from 2003 thats worth 5-6x what I paid for it.  I'm not worried about trading a little of it off.

  9. I've heard a majority of ammo shortages have to do with primer shortages (apparently most of the factories have been slowed to a crawl with Covid or they are imported)

Most of the industry commercial ammo manufacturers have statements on their website saying that they have everything they need to load ammo except primers.

Meanwhile, I just traded ammo for two more guns today (Sig P320 XCompact and a Beretta 21A in 22LR lol)  Thanks Obama.

Where did you locate this pistol build kit?

Google Sig p320 80% kit or if you don't want aftermarket, google "Sig P320 Caliber Exchange Kit"  You can turn your full size X series gun into a conceal carry pistol in 30 seconds with a 400-500 dollar conversion kit.  I know it seems expensive but in the grand scheme of things, its a really nice feature to be able to swap your trigger pack into a parts kit should something go wrong with you gun.  Nice bit of insurance.

The Sig P320 trigger pack comes in an 80% built kit that you can put together with some time & tools in a few hours.  Once you've built your own trigger pack you can drop it into a full size slide and grip, a compact slide with full length grip, etc.  The possibilities are endless.

I just picked up the X5 (non legion) from a guy locally for 700.  Its a great shooting pistol (close to as accurate as a 1911 target gun)  The modularity of the Sig p320 platform is so awesome.  I've already ordered a pistol build kit in the Xcompact so I can swap the trigger pack over to a more carry friendly platform.

Feel like I should've elaborated a bit about this.

The Sig P320 (striker fired version of the Sig P250) is a completely modular/lego pistol system.  You can take the slide off, pull the take pin and pull the trigger pack out of the gun.  That trigger pack can then be dropped into a bunch of different aftermarket/factory grip modules, with different slide/barrel/calibers.  The gun is the trigger pack and it can be exchanged on the fly to any frame or slide combo that the user wants.  The Wilson Combat grip module is only 65 bucks an is awesome compared to the factory P320 grip.

  12. Quarantine gun purchases have been berry berry good to me.  I've picked up a Ruger No 1 in 220 Swift (grail), a few Sig pistols, a Keltec CMR30, and a lot of stuff to upgrade my stable of semi automatic sporting rifles.  (optics, lights, mags, etc)  Its nice when you don't have an 1800 dollar daycare bill for a few months.

My favorite of all them of was the Howa HCR (chassis bolt gun) in 6mm Creedmor for 500 dollars.  It was sitting next to the same gun in camo listed at 999.  The chassis alone sells for 399.  I put the Nikon FX1000 4-16x50 on it and have been reaching out and touching things for the past 3 months every time I get out to the ranch.  Flat shooting, fast, super stable in the wind and about the same recoil as a 243.  The ammo is also readily available so I've been buying a few boxes here and there for months.  Got the dies, some RL16, and a box of 500 Berger Hybrids to start rolling my own for it.  What a great gun for 500 dollars lol.

I completed mine two summers ago.

    1. Drove out west to fish sections of the Rio Grande
    2. Then to New Mexico to fly fish for a few days around Taos.
    3. Up to Colorado to fish the Arkansas and catch some lake trout in a few state parks
    4. Over to Utah to fish a high desert lake (Steinaker) and the Green River.
    5. Over to Grand Teton to fish Jackson Lake
    6. over to Yellowstone to fly fish for 3 days
    7. Drove the Beartooth Hwy out of Yellowstone to Montana.  Fly fished there for 3 days.
    8. Down to South Dakota in the Black Hills.  Fished streams and creeks around there.

Lots of species were caught and all techniques were implored.    Kind of wished I got some time in the salt but I'm planning another one going up the Texas coast line over to Florida in the next few years.

Just got back from another pretty good one.

    1. Taos / Angelfire area
    2. Durango / Animas
    3. Ouray/Ridgeway / Uncomphagre
    4. Telluride
    5. Mesa Verde
    6. Sante Fe / Rio Grande

  15.  After looking at the prices on these things, I usually just go and buy an actual gun.  Always wanted all of my buddies to get one so we could go shoot each other at the ranch but the upfront cost to even get started for me would put me around the price of another AR build.  Oh well.

OK, chalk up another convert to the "dark side".  I gotz me another one.  Neighbor and friend, daughters roughly the same ago.  Transplants from up north.  Corporate RELO, etc.  SO a few years into knowing each other he opens up about all this insanity and wants to buy & learn to shoot.  So I smile like the Chesire Cat and say..."oh really" at my house one night and show him the gun safe.  He just grins back

So took him to the Frisco Gun Club.  Took my little P365 I'm breaking in and we rent him a S&W M&P Shield EZ - no 9mm ammo left anywhere in the building.  So we saddled up with his little .380 and a few boxes of ammo.  Honestly, good first gun to practice with.  He was hooked.  Practiced loading/unloading/clearing.  Barrel and trigger discipline.  He did well.  Worked on his grip and a few other things and he was on paper every time after that and grouping decently well.  Dude had a smile on his face a mile wide!  Went back, bought two more boxes before we had to leave.

Do now the conversation goes to going back every week.  Storing it at my house until he can convince his wife.  Now his daughter wants to go with him and my daughter shoots all the time.  I love it!  Maybe my favorite part of shooting - introducing a novice and seeing that smile and excitement.  Nothing like it.  We might even double-date, as my wife like to shoot also.

I had a chance to pick one up in 22-250 from a old coworker of mine.  Still kick myself every time I see a picture of one.  I will own one some day.  Just has to be the right caliber.

  18. Finally got to get my Keltec CMR30 out to the ranch last weekend to sight in the red dot optic.  Shot 30gr, 40gr, 45g, and 50gr.  It seemed to be most accurate with the 45 and 50gr and feed completely problem free with everything but the 30gr.  Their manual says that 30gr isn't enough to really cycle the action.

For being a cheaply made, semi auto 22 magnum, the thing is almost laser gun accurate.  Many of the groups I shot at 25 yards were cloverleafs and at 50 - they were less than 1" (shooting in a benchrest)

    1) Protesters are not mobbing cars just for funsies. Every notable case of protesters interacting with cars has been from a car driving into a crowd of protesters, typically driving around barricades set up by the protesters.

    2) Blocking a road is not. fucking. violence.

    3) By the definition of terrorism you provided, the feds are domestic terrorists for using violence and the threat of violence against peaceful protesters (shooting rubber bullets at moms, teargas at people with their hands up, etc) to achieve their political objective of red meat for the right and video clips for campaign ads.

Blocking a road is basically acknowledging the fact that you're ready to start some shit with someone trying to use it.   When they try to use the road you're illegally blocking, you swarm their car and start being on it and screaming at them.  It's a recipe for creating violence from either side.  These morons know when they obstruct a roadway, someone is going to try and use it as they should.

I didn't say anything about the government not being terroristic.  They absolutely are.  At least we agree on something.

  20. While I'm on the topic - NOT participating in a protest against police brutality, for BLM, or for any anti-government / police defunding campaign does not automatically mean you subscribe to or support police brutality/are racist/are pro-police.  I keep hearing this same 'silence is violence' bullshit about how you can't just be silently against something, you have to be actively fighting against it.  What if I can't do that?  What if I actively support it financially or politically without screaming at people and blocking highways?

That is whole concept is complete horseshit and you all know it.  These people are hurting their own cause cause they keep letting their marxist bullshit philosophy show through.
