  1. I rode on a WTB Silverado for years and liked it a lot. Last year I switched to an Ergon SM-Comp and I like it a bit better than the WTB.
  2. lol, nice! Yeah that's a good spot for an urban ride. Back in the day we used to do "coaster" races there at night. We'd start on the bridge above Comanche Street and race down to the Quad. Only rule was no pedaling once you hit that first set of stairs. Lots of fun on 90's era XC bikes. Speaking of Angel Fire, I'll be up there 2 weeks from now. Planning on a couple of park days, and also to ride the South Boundary Trail. Has anyone here ridden it? I'm gonna try to have my wife shuttle me, since our Airbnb is near the starting point and trying to estimate the time. It's 21 miles with about 1800' ascent and 4400' descent, so I'm thinking it will take me 2-3 hours although it is at 10k feet for much of the ride.
  3. Epic trip, dude. Thanks for posting all the vids so we could live vicariously.
  4. If you're up to making the Spider trip, definitely check out Reveille Peak Ranch which is 5 minutes down the road. See my post a few above, and wd's somewhere above that. It used to be at the top of my list for Texas until it seemed like they bulldozed singletrack in favor of xterra and spartan events. However, it looks like they're back to building all kinds of good mtb stuff, so it's back to the top. no other terrain like it in Texas. signage is still only for aggys though, so have trailforks or someone with you who knows the trails. Other than that, good places to ride in Austin or within an hour or so: BCGB City Park (Emma Long) Brushy Creek Flat Creek Crossing Ranch Pace Bend Reimers Ranch Pedernales Falls Rocky Hill Ranch
  5. Went out to RPR on Saturday (wd40 inspiration strikes again). Such great terrain out there. Super D was fun, though we skipped the 2 big drops. We went back up later on for a 2nd run and it started raining on the way up, which made for a sketchy descent. I think the sketchiness was mostly mental though, since that granite is grippy even in the wet. I really like the drop area they're building. We only did the baby drop a couple of times, but the first 3 are easy progression as it is only a foot or 2 higher up to the next one. Fourth one looks pretty big. And that 5th one they are building is a damn monster...don't think I would ever hit that. I need to get back out there and try some of those other jump lines.
  6. Yeah that's a private ranch like 5 minutes from Spider Mountain. I didn't know they had been building so much out there, guess I'm due for a trip. Re: elephant butt - funny, I had the same experience. One day after failing once again to get up it on the left off camber side, a buddy and I were standing at the top looking at it and probably chatting about our suckage. Then 3 dudes came through and went right up the steep part and on past us. We kind of looked at each other like WTF just happened?
  7. Great vids, guys. And wd's has that extra bit of entertainment/comedic relief, lol. I've never stopped and taken the camera off to get that 3rd person view. Probably because I'm just too lazy. I need to try it. Been thinking about doing another vid with some of the fun SATN bits with the names of the trails and such, so maybe I'll do that and try incorporating 3rd person a bit.
  8. ^^ Good advice and feedback there. I too really just make my videos for me and sometimes for friends riding with me. I just think it's sort of fun to look back on the riding experience and relive it a bit. And to see just how shitty of a rider I am. Sometimes funny things happen like crashes and that's always good entertainment. Mine are usually shared publicly because no reason not to really. I don't get many views or anything since I mainly just share the link with a couple friends. But sometimes I'll get the rando youtube viewer that finds a video and leaves some comment like "Lame!" or "Boring!!". I always get a kick out of those. I also enjoy watching videos from others, as I like seeing local trails from different areas. So keep at it @Braff Zacklin if you enjoy it, and post em up here.
  9. definitely looks like the left line is the place to start. Momentum would be your friend here, if you can get enough to get over the root section then have a bit leftover to get up and over the ledges. As mentioned, gear choice would be important, not too low of a gear so that you don't spin out on the ledges. Master that left line, then take your shot at the middle to right part if you're feeling it.
  10. Hell yes, that's a total bucket list trip. The Portal trail is way up high on the pucker scale...I get clenched up just watching youtube vids of it.
  11. You're kind of in a similar place as I was before I bought my Occam. I was pretty sure I didn't need any more than 120/130, but after riding the Occam and now having spent a year on it I am glad I went with a bit more travel. As Twice mentioned, the main drawbacks of the bigger bikes are being overcome by the latest designs. My bike climbs very well, I thought just as well as the Ripley I demo'd. As a fellow SATNist, I can tell you a 120 bike is plenty for that trail system. But if you venture out elsewhere, say BCGB or go to Spider, the extra travel sure is nice. If you do go with the Ripley though, it will still be much more capable than the old school HT you're coming from, and you'll find it makes things like Bowie Stonewall much less sketchy (and then you will seek out more and more challenges...).
  12. meant to ask about Deception again...did the original trail include most of what is now Double Down? I don't remember it being quite that difficult whenever I rode it a few years ago. I had to walk quite a few spots on DD.
  13. On Snail, I just went through it once, not taking that big drop but taking a line to the right with some smaller drops and then those g-out wall ride type lines. I wanted to spend a little more time there exploring that area but I was getting kind of pressed for time at that point. And I did miss that Gnargasm area too...I figure there's more out there than I'm aware of or shows up on Trail Forks. Just means I need to get back up there and explore. re: the pads, I was going to just order them from Amazon after Braff posted the links and it looked like they had quite a few in stock. But then I went over to Jenson and they had them as well, so just bought from them.
  14. Rode Brushy on Monday, it was the 2nd or maybe 3rd time I've been there. But it had been a number of years and I recognized some of it, but not a whole lot. I think I hit everything out there except Peddlers Pass. Got turned around a couple times so did some backtracking, and I rode some parts multiple times. Ended up being about 15 miles. Good times, there is some fun stuff out there. Enjoyed Picnic and Snail. And I can appreciate how well marked and signed things are - most of the stuff I ride on this side of town isn't marked at all. So what happened with the Deception name? Did that get "retired" or something? Never saw any mention of it. Seems like 1/4 notch looked like it from what I remember before. Oh and check out this damn vulture I ran into while riding down what I think is called Dave's Ditch (which I thought would be slick in the wet but wasn't). It was munching on a dead racoon and startled me a bit.
  15. nice, hadn't checked amazon in a while. Rode Spider yesterday. Me, and a bunch of spring breakers. Tarantula was closed, because they are building a new trail that goes over it. From what I could tell, it looks like it will be pretty good.
  16. After spending 3 weeks up there over 2 separate trips toward the end of last year, we're already planning another for this spring.
  17. I'll let you know if I find any. Been at least 5 years since I've ridden at RHR. I did a few XC races out there in the 90's and those were always fun. If you were able to be toward the front of the pack at the top of Fat Chuck's, then you were in good shape the rest of the race.
  18. Looks awesome. I'm itching for another trip up that way. Seems like you're dodging the rain so far?
  19. I haven't tried that site, but it doesn't look like they have the hanger I need anyway. I've got XT 4 piston brakes. I entered my email addy in at a couple sites like worldwide and jenson to let me know when they are back in stock. And I have received a couple notifications, but by the time I see it and check they are out of stock again. I think mine should last a good while longer, but always like to have spares on hand. Good idea on the FR512 spot which I believe is at RHR? Haven't been out there in a long time. Maybe I'll check that out too.
  20. It's pretty difficult to get a lot of things right now. I've been trying to get a spare derailleur hanger and brake pads for a couple months now. Can't find shit. I also saw that a lot of bike manufacturers are raising their prices, some up to 10%. On an unrelated note, Spider is open all next week. Tickets are cheaper too at $31, so I think I'll head out there weds or thurs.
  21. Dropper if you don't have one already. But as Twice mentioned, you don't have to spend $200 on one.
  22. He must have turned over the demo fleet because the one I rode was in that blue and orange Gulf livery. Are you going to try a Revel Rascal? He has one of those as well I believe. I referred a friend over there and he demo'd about every bike Wes had, then fucked up his shoulder in a crash on the last one. Not sure if he ordered anything yet. I kind of wish I would have tried the Ripmo. At the time, I was still in more of a XC/downcountry mindset, and tried the Ripley instead. If you do end up going with the Occam, upgrade it to the 36 fork (and of course to Minions as well). It's a small upcharge at cost, and I really wish I'd have done that instead of sticking with the 34 - but again, that mindset I had at the time.
  23. Here's an example of sloppy building practices in our CenTex houses. This is the pipe coming from the spigot on the north facing wall of my garage. Run between the brick and insulation/plywood. There's a nice cold breeze coming though the shitty mortar job too. I had wrapped it pretty good outside on Thursday but it was already frozen. I thawed with a hair dryer and re-wrapped. gonna try to insulate that as best I can, but will probably leave this hole in the sheetrock open to it so the warmer garage air can get to it. might need to look into heating up the garage in some way though.
