  1. Tell that to South Austin’s mom.
  2. Shit. Tomorrow I have to pull the cover out to open the valve. This is going to suck.

    WTF is going on?
  4. Stay in Singapore. Ignore neighbor/tenant/whatever. Problem solved.
  5. What’s a “side by side”?
  6. Is there any timeline at all on getting water pressure again in Austin?
  7. I have a natural gas-burning fireplace. It’s the kind with fake embers and fake logs. It radiates some heat to the space but not much, mostly decorative. Anyway, I’m thinking of replacing the burner with one or those “radiant” burners, assuming that they make such a thing. I’m also thinking, my furnace is natural gas also but the fan needs electricity. I may buy a small generator (1 kW should suffice), and use it to power only the furnace. That way if I lose power I can still heat the house.
  8. 20 kW seems like overkill. Edit: I mean, I guess it’s probably not overkill if you are Michael Dell.
  9. I’m pretty certain that the advent of social media has turned our collective neurosis up to 11.
  10. I had to chuckle today when I saw a mighty Wrangler rubicon bucking and chirping on the Lowes parking lot. The idiot owner put it in 4WD and the pavement was clean.
  11. They are all over the place, actually. For example Audi/VW uses two different types of AWD system: quattro and haldex. Rule of thumb, if the engine is mounted longitudinally it will have quattro; if it’s transversal, haldex. Quattro has a center differential that by default will split the torque in some way, for example 40/60 or 50/50 or whatever, but it can send more to the front or rear as needed. Haldex by default sends all the torque to the front, and as soon as it senses that the wheels are slipping, it starts to send some torque to the rear, and it stops doing that as soon as it senses that the front wheels stopped slipping. Subaru also uses several different types. There are videos on youtube where they explain the 4 or 5 different systems used by Subaru. The only ones I remember are thr WRX uses a mechanical center diff that always splits 50/50, and they use the brakes to transfer torque to the wheels that are not slipping. The WRX STi on the other hand, very different. It has a center diff where the driver can actually dial in the split, or be automatically controlled, plus the front and rear diffs are torsen (the front and rear diffs on the plain WRX are open). I don’t know what Mercedes does but fuck Mercedes. Most tires that are rated for deep snow (three peak symbol) are dedicated winter tires, but there are some all-purpose tires that also have the three peaks. I used to have a set of Yokohama something or other that were all-terrain and deep snow rates, and I used that car in the snow and the tires performed pretty well. Now I have a set of BF Goodrich all-terrain which also have the three peaks, and I also drove in deep snow and they were fine. All-terrain tires with the three peaks can stop a lot faster than regular “all season” whatever tires, but they are not as good as proper winter tires.
  12. Yep, sucks for the teachers. My wife is not special ed but she teaches elementary and kindergarten kids...good luck getting them to distance and all that shit. She’s had kids coming up to her and she’s constantly like go back to your spot. It has given her a lot of stress. She has acquaintances who had covid and they recovered but had “brain fog” for months. Also shortness of breath.
  13. For us in the souf where it freezes for a few days (if at all), you can’t convince me that dripping the hell out of your faucets (especially the exterior ones) is a bad idea. For people in the north I kind of understand. For one, they would have to drip their faucets all winter long.
  14. You say that people wrap them up. What I don’t understand is: what is the point of wrapping them up? I mean, if it stays below freezing for days (or in your case for the whole winter), then the faucet itself and the water inside will get cold no matter what you wrap them with. So what’s the point?
  15. Yes, in my opinion. The pros are that you can open your faucets and allow the pipes to drain as much as possible. The only con that I can think of is that when service is restored, you won’t know it.
  16. I’m pretty sure that you are not gonna get a bill in the thousands. If the power company passes the cost down to you, it will be crazy high price for only a few days, not the whole month.
  17. I think you would be OK leaving the water heater like that. It’d be safer if you closed the inlet and outlet valves to the water heater. That way you know the water will stay there. And leave it hot, assuming it’s gas. If it’s electric then drain it.
  18. Yeah, fuck this “boil water notice”.
  19. After reading your post I checked my faucets and my pressure is very low. I’m in Oak Hill. I’m on standby for operation drain the house
  20. I would probably try to empty the pipes by closing the main valve and opening the faucets. If some water remains in the pipes, it should bust them since there’s plenty of room for the ice to expand. Not sure what I would do about the water heater, though. You could turn it off, connect a hose to the spigot, and empty it. Or you could close the valves in and out and leave the water inside, and leave it on to keep the water warm. But take this with a grain of salt.
  21. Lots of places that don’t have natural gas.
  22. There’s one thing I just don't understand: for many months now we know that there is a strong correlation between vitamin D level and severity of covid. Not only there’s correlation but the causality is there too. When they give hospital patients vitamin D upon arrival, the death rate ends up being like 60% lower or some shit like that. Vitamin D is readily available at any pharmacy. We also know that it’s hard to fuck up the dosage. Nearly half of the population is vitamin D deficient. For a lot of the population who are deficient, 1000 IUs or 2000 IUs are going to bring the level up to where you want it. You could take enough to where it becomes toxic, but it seems that it would be a lot more than what is needed in most cases. So having said all this, why the fuck is the government not urging people to take a vitamin D supplement?
