  1. My guy Dana Brown sure does love the word “ultimately”.
  2. I understand where you’re coming from. But if you won’t do what it takes to “take advantage of dumbfucks that don’t understand how anything works”, well, then you have already lost.
  3. Dismissing shit because it’s childish and stupid is how the Dems keep losing.
  4. This is excellent and to me can be summarized as that Biden/Dems were both passive and stupid. It’s too late to address the issue of Ukraine (should have been touted as akin to the German invasion of Poland) and the economy (should have been coined Trumpflation from the get). But to translate into a way forward for all other topics: 1. Reverse the narrative on Border Security. Support the wall, support deportations of illegals. 2. Dismiss the narrative on trans issues. Don’t bring up anything related to trans people, and when it comes up, immediately begin SHOUTING about wealth inequality and universal healthcare. 3. Define the narrative on abortion. As you said, pick a reasonable period and define it and stand behind it. And consistently loudly remind everyone that the other side’s period is zero weeks. This board seems to be in total agreement (from both sides): ID politics is a loser. The Dems’ winning issue (imho) is addressing wealth inequality. They have to present that in an Entertaining way. Character/integrity matters not.
  5. You might be right, we’ll have to see. At this point it’s clear that Houston cannot remain competitive just by engaging in the free agent market. If the window is going to stay open after 2025, it will be because the front office was able to generate core talent via the farm system. One heartening fact is that of the 7 players on Houston’s roster who project for 3+ fwar, 6 of them were non-pedigreed prospects. Diaz and Alvarez were acquired via trade in exchange for middling players. Altuve and Valdez were non-bonus international signees. Brown and Pena were Day 2 draft picks. Tucker was the only player who came into the system with a top prospect profile. So if Houston can replicate those kinds of moves over the next 18 months, they’ll be just fine; keep an eye on Ronel Blanco and Zach Dezenzo this season. Dana Brown is an awful interview. He speaks in non-sequiters and seems to lack confidence. That isn’t a guarantee he’s an incompetent GM; his background is in scouting, and if he does that job extremely well, he’ll be a great GM regardless of how cringey his interviews are. The early returns on his drafts are good.
  6. Crane has maintained top 5 payrolls for several years. He spends money, just not on long term deals.
  7. Dezenzo should eventually be a plus in LF with his speed and arm. I think he could be a sleeper ROY candidate this year.
  8. It’s really hard to speculate on Houston’s moves with so much uncertainty on free agent and trade prices as well as uncertainty in Crane’s willingness to raise payroll. I don’t want Crane giving Bregman $230M if he’s not going to continue to raise the roof each year. Same, I don’t want him giving another 1B in his mid 30s a big contract. If Crane’s not gonna pony up the money to make up for his shitty free agent signings (and make up for the fallout of losing all those draft picks for the sign stealing penalty) then Houston is best served plugging holes with upside plays. Polanco is probably a decent risk at 3B. If Bellinger wouldn’t be an attitude problem and not cost prospects (with Cubs eating some of the 2026 risk) he is a very very good fit for the roster. I actually think Alex Verdugo could be a good fit for extending Houston’s lineup. Depending on the trade market, guys like Burger, Baty, Lowe, and others could be good values. Bottom line is that I think Houston could still field one of the 3 best teams in the AL even if they completely opt out of the top tiers of the free agent market.
  9. There’s lots of money out there. Some teams have clarity on the tv money now, some teams have new ownership who don’t care about turning profit. The FA market is very thin for position players and they’re all represented by the same guy. It wouldn’t shock me if Bregman ended up with $230M now. Astros need to stay away unless Crane is going to be willing to consistently field $275M+ payrolls until Altuve retires. The Astros will be good without Bregman and could even be great if they pivot to the right guys. There may not be “bargains” anymore but there are guys who will produce nearly what Bregman does over the next 2-3 seasons who will be a fraction of the cost.
  10. Trump’s America is going to be chaotic. That’s why he was elected. People didn’t want progress. They want entertaining chaos. Trump is Mojo from the X-Men comics. The unemployment rate, GDP growth, and the stock market should have meant Biden/Harris cruised to election. If anything policy-related led to Trump’s election, it was prices (not inflation) and border security. It’ll be interesting to see how those 2 things change over the next 4 years, while also keeping track of the unemployment rate and GDP growth. I would wager extremely heavily that over the course of the next 4 years, prices will not generally go down and unemployment will go up. I do think it’s possible the amount of drugs and illegal immigrants coming over the southern border will go down, but not dramatically. One irony is that the BBB and CHIPS funding Biden passed will continue to stimulate the economy and improve our infrastructure and security over the next 4 years, preventing things from being as bad as Trump would otherwise make them. Meanwhile, a whole bunch of shit people weren’t really voting for is going to go down. Cuts to Medicare and SSI, cuts to public education, restrictions on women’s healthcare, increased deficits, and alienation of our allies.
  11. I think the 2 worst deals (Montero and Abreu) were the result of Crane thinking he could execute an offseason plan that had already been put together by the outgoing GM. I think Click would have targeted Abreu and Montero, but not for the deals Crane ended up giving them (Click likely would have held at 2 guaranteed years for both guys). The McCullers and Javier deals were fair extensions at the time and both could still end up not being terrible (although McCullers is looking unlikely).
  12. $60M in dead money and they are still projected as the 4th best team in the league. Imagine how badass they would be if they had that money to spend this offseason (or just if Abreu, McCullers, Montero, and Javier were healthy and productive to their career averages).
  13. Get an invitation to a birthday party for one of my kid’s classmates named Townes. Wife: “What a stupid name.” Me: “Why, because he was a druggie?” Wife: “What the fuck are you talking about?” Me: “Where do you think they got that name?” Wife: “They clearly wanted to name the kid ‘Towns’ after like a place to live, but wanted to get fancy with the spelling.” My wife didn’t know who Townes Van Zandt was.
  14. Not really about schools, although I am relatively happy with the AISD school my kids are in. More about giving the kids stability to develop deep relationships with neighbors and classmates but mainly staying close enough to family to have support when needed and let my kids get to know their grandparents and other extended family.
  15. I’m a puss but Boise average high in Dec/Jan (38) is over 20 degrees colder than Dec/Jan in Austin (62). That’s pretty damn cold. But tolerable, especially if I was able to get out of it for 2-3 weeks around the holidays. And you’re right, only ~6 days of snowfall each month is no big deal.
  16. Incredulity is beatin’ the …e-ver luv-in…ev-er…liv-in…that’s real little brother en-er-gy
  17. I’ve always assumed Boise was cold af. I actually edited my comment to change it to Billings. But would visit both before deciding.
  18. I think it heavily depends on your personality (and of course, the therapist). I’ve had both and had better luck with women (no pics). I tend to be more defensive and guarded with men because I want to be “right” whereas with women I tend to want to try to please them more (by talking more openly and being more engaged). But I think the therapist’s intellect, style, background, annd personality are more important than their gender.
  19. Youngest kid graduates in 11 years. Only potential complication is if my parents are still around and need me to care for them. Short list: Charlotte San Diego Denver Billings (would keep a place in TX to live Dec-Feb) Seattle
  20. It’s embarrassing to say but DeSantis is more qualified than Hegseth by leaps and bounds.
  21. If anybody wants to know exactly how Aggie fans would have acted if they’d beaten us on Saturday, just look at how incredulity is acting in this thread.
  22. I have resolved to spend 2025 embracing the ignorance and distraction so pervasive among everybody else in society. Being informed and engaged has only made me angry and sad. I intend to eliminate my time spent on social media (including this site) and dramatically reduce my time online. I will watch sports and movies on tv, and spend more time outside and offline. The weapons the bad guys have at their disposal are too powerful. It’s hopeless.
  23. Spent Thanksgiving with my mom’s side of the family. She has an absurd number of siblings and they all live near each other in a shithole on the coast. Ultra-conservative, ultra-ultra catholic. All my like-minded people who are anti-Trump and/or agnostic were either at their other family’s or just bailed altogether. So I spent the weekend feeling very lonely. These people make the characters from Hillbilly Elegy look guilded. They all make such poor life decisions that are very difficult to look past. The main house has 2 slushy machines and 3 ice cream dispensers that are always running. My kids had more sugar Th-Sat than they had in the previous month combined. All the kids except mine are walking around like zombies streaming YouTube or video games on their iPhones. There were 3 cups with bleeding-ear Trump pictures (“Fight! Fight! Fight!”) on them at the table where I ate my Thanksgiving dinner. Had to listen to my cousin’s wife yap about how great RFK Jr was gonna be and how dangerous vaccines are while everybody else yepped along like fucking Boomhauer from King of the Hill. There really wasn’t much drama. And I had a good time watching us beat the Aggies with my dad. But all in all I’d be just fine never celebrating Thanksgiving there again.
