  1. He projects for a league average bat (100 wRC+). As bad as he was last year he still only struck out in 12.5% of his pa. As a full time 1B he projects to 0.6 fwar. Even if he were a well below average defender and only able to play 1B/3B then he would still have value. And there’s logic to the idea that your 12th or 13th position player has more impact in the clubhouse than on the field. Im not lobbying for Houston to sign him; I wouldn’t do it if I were their GM. But for <$8M and no commitment of significant playing time, I don’t think it’s a terrible decision.
  2. Gurriel would probably be solid taking over Diaz’s role outside of playing SS. Diaz played in 92 games last year: 28 in LF, 22 2B, 18 SS, 10 at 3B, 7 at DH, 6 at 1B, and 1 in RF. So if Gurriel is willing to sign a cheap 1 year deal with the expectation of playing 60-80 games, he can be a good value.
  3. Places I used to go: RadioShack, Blockbuster, Hastings, Camelot Music, Tower Records, Bennigans, Black Eyed Pea, Furr’s Cafeteria, Luby’s, Jarman Shoes, Foleys, Montgomery Wards, Chelsea Street Pub, Corn Dog 7, Gold Mine arcade, Tilt arcade, Handy Andy, Bag-And-Save, K-Mart, Woolworth’s, Sears, Dunlap’s, Weiner’s, Bealls My parents always talk about Burger Chef and Hamburgers By Gourmet.
  4. Seeing Trump stroke out and die while giving a speech at a MAGA rally would be the most enjoyable thing I’ve ever seen on television. Like, however satisfying watching King Joffrey feel the poison was, watching Trump die while his minions watch live would be infinitely better. However sad or horrified the bulk of the nation was when they first saw the Zapruder film in 1963, video of Trump dying would be the opposite of that.
  5. I don’t think anyone would want to pen him in as an everyday LF. But offensively he would still rate as a well above average hitter for that position; he projects to have similar production to Haniger or Brantley or Benintendi. I think the idea with Houston signing Contreras would be they want to bring him in without displacing Maldonado as the primary catcher, and obviously you don’t sign someone like Contreras unless you intend for him to be an everyday player. So if he’s only going to get 50-60 games at catcher, how do you get him 70-80 games elsewhere. If he can get 55 games at catcher, 55 at DH, and then be a serviceable backup at 1B or LF and get 10 games at each of those positions, you get his bat in the lineup full time without displacing any established starters. I personally think Contreras would be fine playing 10-20 games in LF in MMP while Alvarez DHs or takes a day off. Especially considering that if the game situation changes you can always put in a better defender like Dubon or Meyers. Contreras for $70M/4yrs or less would be a really good deal for the Astros.
  6. I also saw something where MLB sold some tech to Disney that will result in a $30M windfall for each team this year. Between that and the extra revenue for winning the World Series there’s no reason Houston shouldn’t field a top 5 payroll, which means going well over the first threshold. Another thing to note is that the Astros spent well below their budget in 2022; that’s one of the reasons Click was fired. So they should have leftover money as well. Finally, there’s still a huge potential windfall lingering out there from Crane’s lawsuit against McLane for the tv network snafu. All that being said, I don’t expect Houston to go over $230M in payroll by opening day. I think they’ll sign 1-2 more 3rd tier contracts (in the $10-$20 AAV range) and maybe 1-2 4th tier contracts (<$10M AAV). I don’t expect them to sign Verlander. But it’s certainly feasible if Crane wants to go there.
  7. Should have roughly $30M to add to the 2023 payroll before hitting the first CBT threshold.
  8. Of course it all depends on price, but Nimmo, Conforto, and Benintendi all look like great fits. If the prices shake out correctly, the right players are open to lesser roles, and Crane is in fuck it mode, I could see an opening day roster of: 2B Altuve SS Pena LF Alvarez 3B Bregman RF Tucker 1B Abreu CF Nimmo* C Alfaro* DH Brantley* Bench: Maldonado, Gurriel, Dubon, McCormick Rotation: Valdez, McCullers, Javier, Garcia, Urquidy, Brown Bullpen: Chafin*, Maton, Stanek, Neris, Montero, Abreu, Pressly Optioned: Lee, Diaz, Hensley, Meyers, Matijevic, Perez, Whitley, Bielak, Blanco, Dubin, France, Mushinski, Taylor, Martinez Traded: Paredes
  9. 2023 projections: Abreu: .276/.349/.450, wOBA .348 Altuve: .274/.351/.460, wOBA .352 Imagine adding a hitter of Altuve’s caliber to last seasons lineup. Nimmo, Brantley, Conforto, Benintendi, Gallo, Profar, and Bellinger are the lefty OF bats that make the most sense for Houston’s next move. Adam Frazier and Robbie Grossman are lesser dark horse options. Mullins, Reynolds, Varsho, Yaz, Corbin Carroll, Alek Thomas, Happ, Santander, Cavan Biggio, Jake McCarthy, Josh Lowe, Vidal Brujan, Austin Meadows, Max Kepler, Trevor Larnach, Gavin Sheets, and Jake Fraley representpotentially available lefty OF trade options.
  10. If Angilau comes back: 1st string: Banks, Angilau, Majors, Campbell, Conner 2nd string: Karic, Hutson, Neto, Agbo, Williams If Angilau doesn’t come back it probably makes sense to go get one interior portal guy. Either way the OL should be a major strength next season.
  11. Assuming: Ford, Sweat, Collins, and Watts come back No players who played a lot transfer out Anthony Hill commits to Texas The defense will be extremely good and possibly championship caliber. Sorrell, Collins, Sweat, Murphy, Broughton, and all the Fr/So on the line. Ford, Hill, and (hopefully) an elite portal addition at LB. Watts, Barron, Thompson, and all the Fr/So at DB. LB is the real question. Losing Ford and not adding Hill and/or a good portal guy would be devastating.
  12. Why are you posting a bunch of screen shots of the game score in the “in between games” thread?
  13. Mayfield ones seem to be pretty well-run. Dripping Springs location closing affected me. Definitely would make money if it was reopened by a motivated franchisee willing to help work it. Burgers and ice cream slam, fries are trash. They would probably do well to simplify their food menu, especially at the very rural locations. A lot of small towns would be even more shitty without their DQ.
  14. That is insane. How many Colonels has the US military had killed in battle post-Vietnam? Can’t be more than a handful. 45 is big ass number. Same for them losing 10 Generals.

  16. If we win the fucking conference and the subsequent bowl game against a highly ranked opponent, we will finish with 4 straight wins against bowl teams and ranked in the top 8 with a likely top 3 recruiting class. And this board will be slobbering so much over Sarks knob they’ll drown. I’m not saying an extension is the right move or any kind of guarantee, but that kind of season easily exceeds expectations, which in todays college football coaching world usually means there’s at least discussion of raises/extensions.
  17. Still a huge range of outcomes for this season; we have a chance to finish 10-4, 9-4, 9-5, 8-5, 8-6, or 7-6. At the time of Sark’s hire most people would have started beating off if you’d told them we’d be 10-4 with a conference championship and a top 5 recruiting class in year 2 (while having a 49-0 win over OU and being 4 plays away from an undefeated season). Just the same, most people would have rioted if you’d told them Sark would be .500 after 2 years. Considering how recruiting is going, 8-9 wins puts Sark on a fine trajectory with next season and the following being the real proving ground. 7-6 would be bad, and should put Sark on the hot seat. 10 wins is extension territory.
  18. That’s how it is with a lot of people including my wife and I. Banged away for 2 years trying for #1, ended up having to do Clomid/IUI. Decided we were ready for #2, one squirt and done. Damn the luck.
  19. $1.2M for a guy who rarely strikes out, is an above average base runner, and is a good defender at CF, SS, 2B, and 3B is a good value. Dubon should definitely be tendered.
  20. Mother of fucking god. How has there not been more vigilante justice against those cops.
  21. Unemployment <5% MoM Core PPI just came in flat for Oct Russia getting utterly buttfucked in a kinetic war without a single American service member dying Split congress with moderate POTUS Its a great time to be an American.
  22. Any one of Bell, Rizzo, or Abreu would be a great fit for Houston’s lineup and clubhouse. Those 3 are pretty far separated from all the other available 1B options, whether trade, free agent, or internal. Yandy Diaz would be the only trade target I think could be as good as those 3. If they aren’t going to go get one of those 4 guys, I just as soon they roll with some combo of Matijevic, Yainer Diaz, and Hensley at 1B and bring back Yuli on a cheap one year as a bench bat/insurance. But I do expect Houston to sign one of the big 3 free agent 1B. Don't count Verlander out. I think Crane likes him enough that if he circles back after shopping around, the last offer will still be valid even if it means going over the tax threshold. Odds have certainly gone down since the end of the season but it’s not over with him until he officially signs elsewhere. Good news is Houston will be just fine either way. The next 2 seasons should be the most talented rosters Houston has ever fielded.
