MSU has all the momentum now. I think it's going to be tough for Auburn.

If Auburn hangs on (which is very much up in the air), underdogs will have won 3 of the 4 opening round games.

I at least appreciate it. It’s interesting. It doesn’t seem like a huge advantage for Vandy and it’s Vandy-specific, and not applicable to all private schools.

Thanks for sharing. That’s an awesome policy if you’re a Vandy student. They’re not skirting NCAA rules to give academic scholarships to baseball players. They’re giving every student a free ride whose parents make less than 100k. I doubt many private schools have the money to do that.

I think scholarship money is a huge piece of the puzzle that often dwarfs other considerations. And yes, I wouldn't hesitate to pay less at Vandy, Duke, Stanford, Rice, and TCU than paying more at LSU, Florida, Arkansas, Florida State, and Mississippi State. But yet, other than Vandy, the public schools all outrecruit and outperform the privates. (Edited to add that TCU did outrecruit some of the public schools this year at least)

I would buy that there are a few (like 2 or 3) private schools that bend the rules to hand out more scholarships with Vandy being the ringleader. But I am interested in the link if you find it. I don't think it's commonplace across private schools as Augustus suggested.

There are dozens (hundreds?) of private schools competing in college baseball. Your analogy to the performance of one school is a bad one. One school can be an outlier. You also didn't address recruiting. You addressed only performance. Why aren't the private schools recruiting better if they have all these extra scholarships to hand out?

Can you provide any metrics or data showing that they actually scholarship more players? And if they are actually able to scholarship more players, why aren't they recruiting better? I think there are 3 private schools in the top 25 recruiting rankings this year. https://www.perfectgame.org/Rankings/Recruiting/Rankings.aspx And why aren't they performing better?

What is the benchmark? The top 16 seeds this year included exactly one private school, Vanderbilt. https://www.ncaa.com/news/baseball/article/2019-05-26/16-regional-hosts-selected-2019-di-baseball-tournament The last private school to win a CWS, Vanderbilt in 2014. Before that, Rice in 2003. https://www.ncaa.com/news/baseball/article/2019-06-16/ncaa-college-baseball-bracket-2019-printable-college-world-series I'm skeptical that private schools have any advantage.

People say that, but when you ask why, they refer vaguely to scholarship advantages. I'm not sure I buy it. Who are the other private school baseball powerhouses? Stanford? TCU? They aren't exactly dominating the sport. It's the big public schools, particularly those in the south and southwest. And Vandy.

  19. Maybe some of you cultured globe trotters will start getting flight shamed. https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/the-flight-shame-issue-comes-home-to-rick-steves/ A single round-trip flight between Seattle and, say, Rome, emits about 3.5 tons of CO2 per person — the same as nine months of driving in the average U.S. car, according to the EPA. The carbon cost of flying is so steep that in Europe it’s led to a new movement that the Swedes call “flygskam.” It translates as “flight shame.” The premise is: fly less, or even, don’t fly at all.
  20. It wouldn't surprise me if Amazon loses money on the credit card, even with high interest rate. If a decent percet of cardholders use the card only at Amazon, Amazon is taking a loss on every purchase. The swipe fees are dwarfed by the 5% cash back. The card could encourage cardholder to increase their overall spend at Amazon, however. So maybe they view the card as a loss leader.
  21. The detective played by Felicity Huffman in When They See Us wrote an op-ed in the WSJ. Unsurprisingly, she disputes some of the info presented in the show. There is some interesting info in her op-ed, but she agrees with the decision to vacate the convictions. So, still a tragedy even if the writer/director took some factual liberties. https://www.wsj.com/articles/netflixs-false-story-of-the-central-park-five-11560207823
