I mentioned this in another thread, but my ex's extended family all live in the panhandle around Hartley. The town was on it's last legs and the school (one building, K-12) was about to shut down and kids would have to bus to Dalhart. Several big dairies moved in and the immigrants that worked in them kind of saved the town. Now all the locals are mad they have to hear Spanish in the stores...the same stores that were about to close down.- 2024 Presidential Election Thread - Let's keep the party going.

Every time one of my HS connections on FB posts something stupid about "SpEaK EnGlIsH!!" I like to remind them that their great grandparents spoke Cajun French almost exclusively, their grandparents were bilingual, and neither they or their parents speak a word of Cajun French. And all of them will lament that they never learned the language from their Grandparents when they had the chance and talk about what a tragedy it is that that important part of their heritage is lost.- Colin Allred, doing what nobody asked

Starts at 8:00 CDT, right? I think I'll take a gummy around 6:00.- Tell Me About Michigan
We had a great time and no issues before or after, but my girlfriend is a UM grad and was dressed head to toe in maze and blue. We mostly got a lot of "House divided" and "What's the bet?" jokes, but that was the worst of it. We parked off Scio Church road on the other side of the High School, and I was the only guy in Burnt Orange I saw until we got to the tailgate lot by the school. I could see it being worse if you walked through campus with all the students.- 2024 Presidential Election Thread - Let's keep the party going.

When the ex and I were first married (early 2000's), we went up to Hartley for Christmas to visit her grandparents. Her Aunt was the school secretary (K-12 in one building) and was lamenting that they would probably be closing down the school district soon, and all the remaining kids in Hartley would have to bus to Dalhart. She was upset because she and her husband were nowhere near ready for retirement, and she would have to find a new job in Dalhart. The grocery store and all the other mom & pop business were in the same boat. Just hanging on by a thread. Then "Big Dairy" moved in. (Farmers die and their kids sell out because they don't want to farm in a dying town) Fast forward 15 years, and the last time I saw her Aunt before my divorce, the school was busting at the seams and they were talking about adding portables. They couldn't hire teachers fast enough, and all the local businesses were doing well. There were even a few new restaurants in town. Was she happy about keeping her job and the town getting a new lease on life? Of course not. She was lamenting how it was "ruined" because she had to hear Spanish at the grocery store.- 2024 Presidential Election Thread - Let's keep the party going.
I got home from the game late last night. Girlfriend is a UM grad and grew up in rural Michigan about 45 minutes NE of Lansing. We spent a couple extra days on the trip so she could visit some family and such. Man, rural and small town Michigan is more enthusiastically MAGA than any place I've ever been. Tons of MAGA flags and Trump Vance campaign signs in every yard. We met a couple of her cousins for dinner Friday night in the slightly larger town next to where she grew up and their entire "town square" area looked like the 4th of July, except the flags were all Trump and FJB flags. If you just glanced at it, it looked like "Patriotic Small Town USA"...but it was 100% MAGA- 2024 Presidential Election Thread - Let's keep the party going.
I played beer league baseball with him for several years in the '90s.- Fishing Rod Building
nicely done! Those look great. I got into it for a while, but after I built all the rods I'd ever need and even gave away a few, I sorta lost interest in it. Now I fly fish almost exclusively and got into tying most of my own flies instead.- 2024 Presidential Election Thread - Let's keep the party going.
