Would he take a G6 job or is he content as OC while waiting for a P4 offer? There are 4 openings in the American for programs that have shown the ability to succeed plus JMU and surely others. Would he be a candidate at Kentucky or BYU?

Would BYU hire a non-LDS to lead their football program?

Man if I was a Tech fan I would shut the fuck up until I actually got the first outright big boy conference championship ever in the history of my program under my belt and maybe went a few rounds in the playoffs.  Tech has had a good season, don't let it go to your head.

    I don't disagree.

I'm just pushing back on everyone talking about how bad our schedule was and that if we were in the SEC or BIG we wouldn't be in the playoffs.  You are right...we haven't proven a thing yet.  This season is all for not if we don't win the Big12 and win at least one playoff game.

Has one football program been singularly responsible for another football program's demise like Texas has been for Nebraska?

Nebraska is responsible for Nebraska's demise.

Had they stayed in the Big 12 and not help to break it up, they would still have exposure to Texas recruits.  When they left the Big 12, their ability to recruit anyone out of the Lone Star State pretty much dried up over night. They got uppity and didn't realize they were cutting off their nose to spite their face.

Tech went to the CWS a couple of years later, and my group decided to stay in Lincoln to use points for a free hotel room.  We were in walking distance to that little restaurant/bar district just southwest of the UNL campus, and found ourselves talking to some Nebraska fans in one of the local bars.  They were in full regret mode on leaving the Big 12.  Said they hated the BIG, that tOSU and Michigan were way worse than UT, that they no longer had any natural rivals, no recruiting pipeline, etc.  Totally had buyer's remorse on the move to the BIG.

Did you miss the BCS era?

I miss the old, original Big 12, especially the 2008 version when the Big 12 South was as tough of a league as anywhere you would find.

I would like to have seen the old Big 12 paired with the modern 12 or 16 playoff and just see what would happen.

Tech would not have sniffed the playoff if they were in the SEC this year.

    How do we know?

We'll never know...unless Tech beats the SEC team(s) it faces in the CFP.  Otherwise, it's all hypothetical.

I don’t count coach podium chatter as an actual attempt to schedule. In any event, LSU currently has Utah and ASU on future schedules. “Won’t schedule Big XII” is a laughable point. 2026 currently has WVa, ASU, Utah, Kansas, Baylor on the SEC OOC slate.

It's not laughable.  I know for a fact Tech has tried to schedule upper end SEC teams and they won't take the call.

So until I see A&M, UT, Alabama, Georgia, LSU, etc. on Tech's future OOC schedule, I'll continue to make my case.  UT and A&M will not even pick up the phone, which is fine.  But then don't turn around and tell us we don't play anybody when you are unwilling to play us.  You can't have it both ways.

It's going to wind up being an SEC and Big Ten tournament if better teams than most of the field keep getting left out.

    Here's the thing...

Tech would love to schedule these teams in OOC, but they can't get any buyers (I would bet BYU and others would say the same thing).  So if BIG and SEC refuse to schedule the other P2 schools, then how can they then say the other P2 schools should be excluded because they "don't play anybody"?  If BIG & SEC are so confident that they are so much superior top to bottom than Big12 and ACC, why won't they schedule them with reciprocal home games?  Oregon at least did with Tech, so I'll give UO credit for stepping up to the plate when most in their conference and SEC won't.

What really pisses me off is the 8 game conference schedule in the SEC to boot.  Yes, I now that changes next year (thankfully), but this year SEC teams played 8 conference games to everyone else playing 9.  So it's a damn racket.  (1) Criticize B12 and ACC for not having as strong a schedule, but (2) won't schedule B12 and ACC, (3) only playing 8 conference games to everyone else playing 9, and then (4) demand more teams in the CFP because SEC is obviously superior to everyone else.

Forgive me if I refuse to concede that SEC is just that much better of a conference.  It's more of a self-fulfilling prophesy conference.

It seems to me that a BYU win means that the SEC will have to make do with 'only' four teams in the playoffs.  There are ample reasons to say 'sorry' to number five.

    Agreed.

But the SEC SEC SEC folks seem to think that the CFP is supposed to be an SEC Invitational Tournament.

I really hope they go 0-fer in the playoffs...and I really, really hope it's Tech that sends aTm packing.

No, my example of a destination is the program that has won more NCs with more coaches than any other school. All I am saying is that the program that has been very literally the best program over the past 100 years is a very good place to coach football.

Exactly. It’s absurd that anyone would try to make the argument that Alabama is not a destination program. It’s the quintessential destination program, if you can handle the pressure and the complete absence of any semblance of a private life.

    What do you think?

I have mixed feelings. Obviously he's a Red Raider and he was a fun player to watch, but I have a deep, personal dislike for him for a number of reasons. He can be an extremely unpleasant, downright nasty person behind the scenes, I've seen it with my own eyes, but that's not all that uncommon in the CFB coaching scene. It was also years ago so I tend to give people the benefit of the doubt on personal growth. I do think he's a smart, excellent coach that will do good things for you guys.

All in all, I think this is a very good hire. I'm curious to see how he will shape the staff and handle the NIL scene but he's young, adaptable, and smart so I suspect he will do pretty well in that respect.

Apparently, he's not good at the glad handing part of the job.  Big complaint I would hear from the UNT faithful is that he really didn't seem interested in being around the fans.  He would do his radio show at the local Rudy's and as soon as his segment was done, he was gone without shaking any of the hands of the folks who were in attendance.

He's a good coach, but nowadays you have to be more than that.  You have to be CEO of the operation, and part of that operation, especially at the P4 level, is being a promoter of the program. From what the UNT folks tell me, he doesn't seem to have much desire to do that part.

Tech’s squeaker loss on the road is to a team that lost to Mississippi State who everyone on this board thinks is dogshit. The Big 12 has zero good out-of-conference wins this year. It’s a 1 bid league.

ASU lost at the very beginning of the season, on the road, due to one play at the end of the game where the DB and Safety both missed their assignments.  One blown play at the end of the game.  They had the victory and just lost it on one play.

Stop with the transitive property BS, especially games played in week 1 and 2 when these transfers are still trying to gel.  Tech lost to ASU who was blown out on the road a week earlier by Utah who Tech blew out of their own stadium.  Transitive property is meaningless, especially in games played in week 1 on the road.

In 2008 Tech nearly got beat by Nevada (@ Nevada) and looked pretty meh in another non-conference game.  Later that season they beat two Top 10 teams in consecutive weeks.

Using the ASU week 1 loss on the road to Miss St. as a reason to say Tech is not very good is either being dishonest or ignorant or both.

Tech students hate us more than aggy and sooner combined.

    That’s bullshit.

There may be some recency bias due to aTm being off the schedule longer than UT, but otherwise no, the hate is strong against atm.
