2024 Season “What if?” Thread
What If Adolf Hitler Was Accepted to Art School? Had Adolf Hitler been accepted to art school, the cascading effects on the United States' rise as a global power would likely have been profound. Without Hitler’s leadership, Nazi Germany may never have emerged, and the course of World War II would have been entirely altered—or avoided altogether. Without the massive mobilization effort required for World War II, the United States might not have experienced the same rapid economic and industrial growth that propelled it to global dominance. The Marshall Plan, which cemented America’s influence by rebuilding Europe, would never have existed, nor would the Bretton Woods Conference, which established the dollar as the world’s reserve currency. The Cold War, too, might have taken a different shape—or not existed at all. Without the division of Germany and the spread of communism spurred by the war’s outcome, the geopolitical tensions between the U.S. and the Soviet Union might have been less acute. Instead, the U.S. could have focused inward, delaying its global interventionism. The "American Century" might never have dawned in the same way.

More NYC Mayhem: An older man suffered a heart attack and died in our pickup basketball game in Riverside Park. I got to massage his "mid-section area" on instruction from a doctor (who was playing in the game) to get blood flowing. Not fun. Poor man. I witnessed a man get run over by a truck at the Flatiron Building and called emergency services. He was white as a ghost and pinned underneath the truck, and dead when they got there. It was frightening. Our ad agency lawyer jumped from the top floor of our office building into the middle area of the building. His body lay right outside my office window for the day, while the police investigated to make sure it wasn't foul play. His body lay in the rain amongst the HVAC's, all crumpled. Very surreal. Maybe I'm the problem? Stupid celebrity encounter: Split time at the tire swing in Central Park & 72nd Street with my daughter and a man his son. The kids took turns and we made boring conversation for around 20 minutes. His wanted the kids to go together, but my daughter was very shy and didn't want to. Finally, he moved on. My wife walked over and pointed to another part of the playground and said, "Look, there's Robert Dinero!" Yep, that was the man at the tire swing, haha. BONUS SECTION: People at the playground would come up to Dinero and tell him how much he liked his movies. He would warmly shake their hand, and tell them how he appreciated it. I was very impressed with him.

I hear you. Breaks my heart that we sold our big NYC apt when we moved to Texas, but the co-op required the owner to live in it for a year every two years. South of France sounds amazing, and I've seen two super-cheap homes in small Italian towns, but they do require work and potential unknown issues.

Brilliant and understood. Love your location - right next to amazing Brooklyn Pizza Masters. Plus, Trader Joe's below the bridge doesn't suck. I am having some serious life-envy. And as a tribute to anyone who prefers wretched NY stories, we were shopping in the East Village during during daughter's engagement weekend, and there was a man walking right in front of us who had been stabbed in the back! His shirt was covered in blood and he was crying and calling emergency services. He wouldn't let anyone help him. Honestly, it looked like this was a fairly regular occurrence for him.

Well, congrats on your success in a very competitive field. That's tough work! Yeah, she works really hard, so she will have long hours, for sure. Still, I don't see how it can compare to the absolute insanity of investment banking, but we shall see! What about going uptown? There are still some good deals on the Upper West and East Side. What about Brooklyn?

All time Texas QB Ranking Discussion - 2025
I'm sure you're right. But to blame the lack of success on Sam is just wrong. Tom Herman sucked, which is why he no longer coaches here or anywhere. Triggered.

Tom Herman had a player named Kai Money catching passes. Triggered.

You do know that was done a long time ago and he has nothing whatsoever to do with the execution or media placement. Yes, I know you did. I was just checking.

Tremendous. So impressed. Congrats. My NYC daughter just resigned her investment banking job at Morgan Stanley, which she has had since she graduated in '22, and started at a private equity firm this week. She is hoping to have a more sane lifestyle. We owned a big, two-bedroom apt on 65th and York and sold it when we moved to Austin in 2002. Now it's been converted into a three bedroom. We bought it for...$277K in 1996, lol. Just kill me.

I'm jealous that you live in the city. What do you do for work?

Thanks. I will try it next time.

I am sure I'm senile at this point, but I could have sworn I took a train from the airport directly to downtown in Paris, London, Stockholm, Amsterdam and Barcelona. We lived in Manhattan for 20 years, and now my younger daughter is there, so I get back every chance I can. Older daughter got engaged there last November and 40 people flew in for the surprise party on the top of PUBLIC Hotel. That was probably the most fun day of my life. Tom and Jerry's in the East Village is our official family bar. I would love to move back. Not sure that is feasible. Anyway, sorry for the ramblings.

Thnx. Both options sound somewhat flawed. Take a train to the LIRR station, then take a separate train to Penn Station. Take the train to local subway lines through sketchy Queens subway stops. Every other major city in the world has a train direct from the airport to the center of town. It's insane that NYC doesn't offer that.

Translation: those players may have been highly recruited, but there was little to no development under Tom Herman.

Yes, but is there even a direct subway to JFK, or do you have to change to a sketchy bus, like the good, ole days? Also, carrying luggage up and down subway platforms is fun and rewarding.

One of my sisters went to Greenland in 2024 on a photography trip. Beautiful place, but man, it is bleak, and that was in the fall!

Speaking of Westlake QB's, did Cade change your opinion that Klubnik is, at best, a system QB? And I fully admit that he sucked for his first two seasons, especially last year.

Very few of those 'top recruiting classes' had players who succeeded in the pros. Some had none!

It is interesting to note all the similarities between Trump and Hitler: Both fed on the Big Lie: Trump - election stolen. Hitler - Germany stabbed in the back in WW1. Both led a failed insurrection: Trump 2021. Hitler 1923. Both convicted of crime though Trump did not serve jail time Both created a powerful cult movement with heavy use of iconic imagery Both cite returning the country to traditional values from a decadent popular culture Both had team of faithful subordinates who carried out their various illegal acts Both achieved power legally Both authoritarians Both had militia-styled activist groups Both riding trend of resurgence of facist-styled leaders worldwide Both had bogeyman fall-guys: Trump has illegal immigrants and Hitler had the Jews Will Trump remove constitutional barriers, arrest his opponents and declare himself president for life like Hitler did? Make no mistake: he certainly will try!

I wrote the first paragraph. It’s a loose summary of the various justifications Germany used prior to invading Poland. The second is an actual quote from mustache man prior to the Poland campaign, with Panama and Greenland replacing Poland and Czechoslovakia.

I support Greenland becoming a protectorate of Greater America. There are many English-speaking Greenlanders of American descent who are subjects of daily abuse at the hands of the European majority. Plus historically, Greenland has been an American homeland, as it was settled by people who would found America. Also, recently, Greenlander security forces crossed the border and attacked one of our radio stations, killing all the operators and soldiers there. Soon, we will be answering their incessant provocations with weapons. Herr Trump has it very clear: "We have regretted greatly this incomprehensible attitude of the Greenland Government, but that alone is not the decisive fact. The worst is that now Greenland, like Panama a year ago believes, under the pressure of a lying international campaign, that it must call up its troops, although America on her part has not called up a single man, and had not thought of proceeding in any way against Greenland."
