NY times headline:
As Republicans point to declining soybean sales, Democrats scramble to explain past policy decisions as they look to take back the House in 2026
The article:
Declining soybean sales have roiled farmers in the Midwest. While a challenging tariff climate is no doubt a part of the puzzle, we at The NY Times have found a more complex answer. Common sense might point to the tariffs being the factor, it is a fact that during the Biden administration, the US lost more metric tons of sales to China than per week than in anything in 2025 or under Trump.
From its peak of 7 metric ton exports per week, the US lost more than 70.% of its exports during the later part of the Biden administration resulting in a loss of about 5 metric tons per week in less than 3 months. This precipitous decline only reinforces a bleak showing in previous elections for democrats. How democrats react and reel for answers to explain such a disastrous drop in sales is still a mystery. Trump and his allies have expressed the outline of a plan they recently previewed and continue to seek ways to allocate funds to help the struggling farmers.
When we reached out to Tom Greenthumb, a farmer in Shitsville, Nebraska, he reiterated the struggles and challenges for he and his fellow farmers. ”I’m underwater. We are facing some real struggles here” When he was asked who he blamed for this, Tom couldn’t say other than Washington needed to get its act together. He is hopeful, however, that President Trump and the republicans in congress can help him and his fellow farmers. “When Trump saved us the last time we faced this kind of crunch, it felt like a miracle. We pray everyday that Trump will be able to get us the needed relief from all that tariff money we’re collecting. It will be nice to use that extra money to help struggling people like me instead of wasting it on things we don’t need.”
