  1. 39 years ago I got my first job in the big city of Houston. $6/hr + overtime + an office + wear dress clothes. I treated myself to a Cartier Santos to celebrate the milestone. I still wear it every day.
  2. It is ridiculous the amount of information you will get. I joined the Colt Forum, sent pics and got instant responses. Built in 1873, lot 6 to the US gov. Inspected by all the right people. Barrel cut and repurposed for the Spanish American War. Mismatch of other 4 digit parts which was common for the day. Inspected again by all the right SAW personnel.
  3. I recommend going to the Colt Forum. There are a lot of experts on that site that will give you a good idea. Inspection stamps are a big deal. I have a 4 digit, built in 1873 SAA that they provided a tremendous amount of information for.
  4. I like Poke House in Westlake, next to Twin Liquor and Walgreens. Very good bowls and reasonable price. Quick in and out for lunch.
  5. 1911 fan here. Been shooting/carrying a long time.
  6. Have to admit that I had to use the Google to decipher this question. Based on the age, I would say no. Based on the accuracy of time keeping, I would say no. It keeps good enough time, but not anything great. It will get get off a minute or so every week. It runs slightly fast, but not worth the time/cost. I like it just the way it is. Been wearing it a long time.
  7. I live in the much more civilized NF in Colorado. My experiences with black bears and mountain lions is the same our Alaskan resident. By the time I see/hear them they are running across the next valley. We have a lot of both, and they just do not have any interest in human contact. I have seen lots of cubs, but never been between one and the mother. Mountain lions kill fawns in our yard in the summer, but don't mess with the dog. Moose is by far our most dangerous neighbor. They are unpredictable, can be ornery and are so big, a casual assault can be deadly. I carry every day on hikes. Almost always a .45 with Lehigh Defense ammo.
  8. Daily wear for 39 years this month.
  9. If only ONE caliber, then the 30-06 for me. As a handloader, it works great. I loaded the 110 grain Barnes TTSX at 3500 fps for years. Shot a couple hundred deer with that load. 180 grain Sierra Pro Hunter at 2850 fps works wonders for stag, elk, Wildes, zebra, black bear. 180 grain Swift a-frame at 2800 fps works great on giraffe, eland, oryx and the occasional braining of a buffalo. 240 grain Woodleigh soft point at 2400 fps, just because.
  10. Our experience with Ridge Grapplers has not been as good. I am a dedicated KO2 guy but have Ridge Grapplers on wife's SUV. They hydroplane a little in big rains and she is not as confident in them. Will be switching soon.
  11. Used to race in the Big Bend Open Road Challenge in the 90's. DPS shuts down 285 from Fort Stockton to Sanderson. Start in Fort Stockton, drive in your specified class, get official time for first leg in Sanderson. Drive back for finish. No electronic/computer assisted odometer. I had a navigator with a stop watch, book with road markers, HP calculator. Pretty desolate area. The cactus is fierce out there. A couple guys brought a new Viper GTS, got too much lift under the body and spun off the road. When trailered back to town, it was wrapped in old barb wire fence and inside/outside covered in cactus spines.
  12. Congrats. You are doing well and appear to be having similar(great) results as my friend. He is 3 weeks out today and down 30 lbs. Already on the 4 week diet and adjusting to a new lifestyle. New clothes are just around the corner!
  13. Good for you. I have a friend that is 2 weeks post op. Private pay in Austin for around $15,000 all in. Very easy recovery. Has already progressed to soft foods and feeling good.
  14. Headed to our home in Pagosa Saturday. We have 3' of new snow at the house and the mountain has 4' of new snow. Should be great skiing. We are going to stay the month of March and get a few runs in.

We had a party line for a long time. I was a transfer student and the school district was on a different exchange. My parents would not let me call any girls at my school because of the cost. So, I had to cruise the Dairy Queen/sonic in another small town that was closer to the farm and on the same exchange.

Played with Blue Star 15 gauge as a kid. Leoina 66 15L gauge by the reel while in college. Prince synthetic 16 gauge as a poor out of college. VS gut in my later competitive days and now 18 gauge Babolat poly, strung in the 40's lb range.
  17. Paige and 511s have been my go to the last 10 years but have recently switched to Lululemon ABC and Commission pants. Very comfortable and good color selection.
  18. I'm sure Maxwell has some slimy sales guys. I called the GM before I went and asked him to give me their best sales guy who would not try to upsell, bait/switch, or any other tactic. They had the best price and it went smoothly. Their service department has been very good. I get free oil changes/tire rotation. Those were the days. $12,000 under sticker for a Platinum F150 and free oil changes/tire rotations. Just before covid.
  19. Whenever I trade in, I always ask for a new set of KO2s as part of the deal. I pay for it one way or the other. Maxwell Ford is where I buy/trade in.

When you have had enough injuries, check out pickle ball. It came to me after shoulder surgery that had a lot of pins and rope to put everything back together. Before that, many years on the USTA circuit. Replaced knee, both hips replaced, neck fusion, hernia repair, lost toenails, etc... Besides the extra metal in my body, I have shelves of USTA balls, plates and glassware which is nice. Now have joined groups of former college tennis players who have fully transitioned to pb. Fast paced, easy to cover the court, all tennis skills transfer over and courts everywhere. Both of the new pro divisions are full of former Division 1 college players and tennis professionals who could not get out of the minor leagues. There are a couple of top 10 pros who are now at the end of their tennis and being drafted to pb teams. Apologies for the brief interruption of tennis talk.
  21. Reminds me of my teenage days. When seatbelt laws were first enacted, got stopped in rural East Texas. Wadded the ticket up and threw it out the window after the stop. Fast forward several years, now out of college and driving a new Vette. In same rural East Texas, but this time parking with the local doc's daughter. In the tricky stage of the evening, removing pantyhose and maneuvering in a Vette. Lights come on behind us. Sheriffs department runs my DL and comes back with a warrant. Take me into custody, have girl drive my car to her parents and her parents come bail me out. Fun times.
  22. I build a few specs around in the upper end neighborhoods. I have one started right now that is $650/ft with no interest carry, selling costs or profit. Lumber prices are dropping but concrete is being sucked up by Samsung. Labor costs are coming down on framing, electric and plumbing.

    Eyesight poll

PRK in 1997. Have to wear readers now for anything up close. Front sight is hard to find so transitioning to RMR for carry. Last test was a few years ago resulted in 20/15. it has been that for many years. I suspect it has tapered off since the last test and now is 20/20 to 20/30. This thread reminds me to schedule an exam.

    Getting old sucks

Had my first kidney stone episode on Christmas Day. Knew it was there from a previous scan, but didn't think too much about it. Woke up with a ridiculous pain on right side and could only dribble out a little pee. Started chugging water, lemon juice, lime juice, pineapple juice and generally laying on the floor in pain. Wife is not so pleased to be interrupted on Christmas morning and starts getting ready to make an ER run. I could feel the pain move from the back to front, then down towards the exit. Kept chugging acidic juices and it passed thru. I felt great after it passed.
  25. Go to 1911addicts.com and classified ads section. A lot of custom 1911 pistols there. I have a few and they are great. I regularly carry LW Commanders in 9mm and .45 and have a government size that shoots one hole groups at 10 yards. All built for me with the features I feel are most important. It can be a great rabbit hole to go down.
