  1. Guys (and some women) with naturally higher voices who consciously force their voices lower. I suspect this is an attempt to be taken more seriously.... only to result in vocal fry which tends to do the opposite.
  2. While reading, this guy immediately came to mind
  3. Poster deviated from the SOP template. Missed the part about bringing his son/daughter back to College Station to tour the university in hopes that he/she will apply to and be accepted at such an esteemed institution.
  4. I was wondering the same thing. Urbandictionary tells us: Not sure what this has to do with Italians.
  5. They were messing around with them on ESPN this morning. Not so much a kazoo sound, but they do sound like a toy where the pitch increases with the spinner speed.
  6. I've been eagerly awaiting a well done (high production value, good writing, no conflicts with story line) dramatic Star Wars television series that explores the gaps in time or the gaps in setting. I've always thought a series set in the Death Star during construction would be interesting. One that doesn't star Vader or the Emperor, but the events around them - kind of how HBO's Deadwood and Rome follow day-in-the-life of normal people without focusing much on Wild Bill and Julius Caesar, respectively. I assumed this was the case, but verified that you meant Return of the Jedi and not The Last Jedi.
  7. Tell her you thought she meant burnt orange color, not orange flavor, and go with the classic
  8. If Ramjet ever gets tired of hiding Berts in his photoshops, he could spice things up with that guy.
  9. Lots of great ideas. A little summary (not all encompassing) so far. Bourbon Several recommendations for 4 Roses Single. I guess the yellow label turned me off a while back. I'll give the single barrel a try. Heard of Blanton and IW Harper, so I'll check them out. Rye Good call on Col EH Taylor. Forgot to add that to my shopping list above. I heard good things. Scotch Still open to thoughts here. I tend to prefer Speyside and Highlands, but don't know enough here to pick out specific distilleries. Open to blends and singles. Gin Gucci_Suit, I had not heard of Monkey 47 gin. Looked it up and appears interesting. And definitely agree that different gins have different roles. Vodka For Imperia, Reyka, Hammer & Sickle, would you recommend one for martinis? I'm assuming Sobieski is more appropriate for mixers. None of my friends drink straight vodka - either vodka mixers or vodka martinis. I can still add one of them, like Imperia, as a straight option down the road. Rum (sipping and mixing) Don't think I've seen Santa Teresa. I'll keep my eyes out Tequila (sipping and mixing) Milagro, Clase Azul, Herradura all mentioned. Not sure I've ever seen Esperanto. Never tried Mezcal, so Del Maguey Chichicapa sounds like an upcoming adventure. Extras Absolutely interested in upping my vermouth game, so I'll keep my eyes out for Dolins, Cocchi Americano, Antica. Agree with Trey (avatar always makes me laugh) that Cointreau is a good to have and more versatile than Grand Marnier Interesting idea. I agree that St Germain is an excellent, subtle add in many cases. Hadn't considered Manhattans. A friend recommended getting an array of bitters as a relatively cheap/quick way to add a new twist to staple cocktails/mixes. Completely agree. I'm pretty safe there because my friends either fall into the category of: - those who know what they are doing and would never waste exceptional spirits in a mixer or - those who have no idea what they are doing, but know to ask me or one of the other veterans to mix drinks for them. That said, I have put some bottles away in the past based on guest lists. Keep the recommendations coming
  10. Depends on how we define "righted". Pundits tell us that fans can't get the pitchforks out after the second year because they should not expect to be competing for the playoffs already. No serious Texas fan is clearing their calendars the evening of Dec 29. When: you sign a contract for >$5M/yr for five years your performance is evaluated in a very public way on a regular basis you have significantly more resources and talent at your disposal than the majority of your competition you are the head football coach at the University of Texas you are knowingly accepting accountability to deliver results better and faster than is typical. Most fans were hesitantly accepting of last years performance considering the recent past performance and the coaching transition. Aside from the Maryland and Tech games, they won the games they should have and closely competed with ranked USC, OU, and OKST, beat ranked WVU on the road, and won their bowl game. Herman's staff has done well off the field in recruiting, facilities, conditioning, and social media, but those are the raw materials - not the final product you are judged on. What should fans expect from the second season of a coach who knowingly accepted accountability to deliver results better and faster than is typical? Demonstrated traction. The 2018 prediction thread earlier this year clustered around 9-3 or 8-4, which I think would indicate traction. Extrapolating, that means: only allowed one head scratcher game (he's used that up one game into the season) demonstrate consistent competence put away low and midlevel teams by the end of the 3rd quarter minimal player confusion minimal stupid / irresponsible penalties (already saw issues here at MD) nip the Tim Beck controversy in the bud through on the field execution or separation minimal off the field distractions / disciplinary / academic issues against USC, TCU, OU, WVU: you can get smoked once you are competitive in every other game you win one or two of those competitive games you lost last year An 8-4 regular season after several years of 6 and 7 wins and getting to play BU, KU, TT, ISU in conference is not asking for the moon from a coach that knowingly accepted accountability to deliver results better and faster than is typical. If you tell any coach worthy of coaching at this level that they can come to Texas with all of its resources, get paid >$5M/yr, can go 7-6 their first year, and that they will be expected to do a little better than 7-6 in year two, I doubt they would balk at that.
  11. Odd choice to give the football team bit parts in their own hype video
  12. There was an excellent thread on the old site where someone was asking for recommendations on stocking his home liquor cabinet. Since that thread is a few years old and we don't want to go to the other site anyway, I wanted to refresh that topic here. Personally, I'm heavy on the bourbon, rye, and gin side and have gaps in the rum, tequila, and vodka areas. Thanks to the other thread, I picked up Sobieski vodka and friends really enjoyed it. Help me fill in the gaps in my liquor cabinet. Preference to products in a modest price range (<$75 for whiskeys and <$50 for others) that are relatively accessible at liquor stores. We can have a separate category for aspirational / tough to get / special occasion products. Bourbon Usually have a carousel of Eagle Rare, Buffalo Trace, Knob Creek, Woodford Reserve. There's already an active bourbon thread here that I have been following. Seeing a bit about Weller and McKenna, so I'll have to see if I can find them in VA. Rye Bulleit, Knob Creek Sazerac is on the shopping list. Heard about Old Overholt as an undervalued recommendation. Scotch Johnnie Black. Macallan 12 on the shopping list. I tend to prefer Speyside and Highlands, but don't know enough here to pick out specific distilleries. Open to blends and singles. Gin Plymouth and Sapphire for martinis. Tanqueray for G&T. Sometimes cycle in Hendricks and Tanq10. Vodka Sobieski. I'm not much of a vodka drinker, but want something for guests. Rum (sipping and mixing) Have Flor de Cana 12 for sipping. Heard good things about Mount Gay, Diplomatico. Looking for sipping and mixing recommendations. Tequila (sipping and mixing) None in stock at the moment. Looking for sipping and mixing recommendations. Heard good things about the El Tesoro line. Extras I have the standard M&R sweet and dry vermouths, but know there's more/better out there. I'm a big fan of Old Fashioneds, Manhattans, Sazeracs, and love bitters. I have the standard Angostura, but open to new suggestions. I think Peychaud's is traditionally used in Sazeracs. Any absinthe recommendations for Sazeracs? Any must have liqueurs? Chartreuse, St Germain, Luxardo Maraschino, Orange liqueurs Favorite aspirational / tough to get / special occasion products Cuban / Red Havana Club
  13. Used to be a full two hour watcher, but have slowly dwindled to 10-50% watcher. My thoughts: 3 hours is too long. Leads to filler Rece, Fowler, Kirk all fall in my category of "They're ok and sometimes good, but it's ESPN, so they could easily do way worse. Can't complain too much". I've always liked Spielman's persona and perspective (Fox now I think). I think Pollack could tap into that somewhat, while still bringing the youthful/active presence ESPN wants on a pregame show. You won't be able to replace Corso easily, so don't force it. Get a good replacement for the humorous / old timer / lifer coach role (Spurrier, Leach, etc). Not sure if they'll be able to continue the headgear tradition without it being forced. Maria Taylor has huge shoes to fill behind Sam and especially Erin. Need to see more to form a better opinion there, but she seems to do alright. Less Feinbaum, Holtz, May, McElroy. Way less Marty Smith. Less fluffy / yelling game analysis. More thoughtful analysis of tactics, strategy, and execution along the lines of the coach's corner (or whatever it's called) broadcast for the playoff games. Need to do better with spots about campus life. Todd Blackledge has a good 1-2 min segment during his games where he hits a campus restaurant and chows down. Need more of that during CGD. Less DJ stuff. If the school has a good marching band, give them some time. Heck, how about some acts associated with the school/town. Doesn't have to be a famous artist. Less Tom Rinaldi tear jerker suff. More Tom Rinaldi narratives about the actual game, history, tradition, stadiums. New weekly segment: Aggypedia topic of the week or "This Week in Aggypedia History" with RD Despite popular opposition, I do like the "Comin' To Your Cit[ayyyyy]y" entrance, but not a fan of the recent iteration with Lzzy Hale and the white dude with ear gauges. I like how they hit an FCS game and Army-Navy pretty much every year. I'd like to see a little more destination variety than the SEC visits every other week.
  14. Bear logo is Cornell. For a moment, I figured it was Stanford because I was looking for them. Looks like Stanford is missing. I think you're looking at Rhode Island. I don't see Rice. Wonder how long it would take to compile a Surly sourced chart based on something like the QS/THE rankings and the wealth of partying knowledge possessed by this august body. We'll need to add a coed factor to the ratings. To do that correctly, we'll need to send some people to the campuses to do some research. Any volunteers?
  15. Tight pattern for my academic history on this chart. What's the green UT crest at the top right by UF (too far right btw)? Agree UT should be a further up and to the right. Agree UMiami should move left. It's good but not that good. USC is right academically. Figured Washington would have been better (top right) Everyone's focusing on the sexy first quadrant. I want to explore the third quadrant more. I want to see how FAU fares after a few years with Joey Freshwater.
  16. https://www.themorningbulletin.com.au/news/why-not-just-go-nude-about-latest-mens-swimwear/2290200/ "I highly doubt you could swim a lap of the swimming pool without it coming off." I love that someone even considered that as an option.
  17. Lots of good recommendations. I'd keep the Wire, Mad Men, GoT, WW near the top. Lots of people like Justified, but I have a hard time watching Timothy Olyphant. Need to add Veep to the comedy list - I put it right at the top of my comedies with Seinfeld and The Office. Consider Archer. I didn't think I'd like animated comedy, but there's some sharp humor in it. Curb doesn't work for a lot of women, but worth a shot. If she gives up on watching with you, go with Mystery Science Theater 3000 A few others that I'd add that only got a mention or two: Deadwood, Rome, Sopranos, the Tudors (mainly for Natalie Dormer), Band of Brothers Downton Abbey isn't a bad compromise if she isn't into the HBO/Showtime format.
  18. Rawls as the Borgia Pope
  19. Requires repeating: Both of these guys:
  20. Mojo, any recommendations for picking up good brisket in NoVA? Very limited and unappealing selections at the places I frequent. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G935A using Tapatalk
