  1. Later that season, Ford exerted his leadership by confronting Barnes during a game at Oklahoma on senior day. After the 6-foot-8 Brian Boddicker botched his assignment to rebound — he had none in the first half — an infuriated Barnes told him he was done for the night. Ford then engaged his coach in an argument, insisting that if Barnes wanted to win the game, Boddicker's presence was necessary. "I walked down to the end of the bench and said, 'Brian, I'm gonna give you one more chance,'" Barnes said.
  2. I care. After watching Texas v. A&M from 2007 last night, I prefer that game over any played by Texas in the last ten years. I'll take a top 5 player every year. And I'll take a 5 star player who is a leader and will tell the coach to shut up (as TJ did to Barnes).
  3. Bringing Up Baby with my college aged kid. His take on it was hilarious. Hepburn tells Grant “that’s might wide of you”. Was that the original expression and did ‘white’ get substituted as the more common saying? Whenever someone told me that expression. I always responded with wait I’m not trying to steal your land.

Heard Ferreira is starting in tomorrow's friendly against Costa Rica.
  5. “Little by little, the look of the country changes because of the men we admire.” Watched Hud for first time and it was excellent. Also saw some of Shoah - Four Sisters. Very powerful, but this is four hours. I think the full Shoah is around 20 hours. Great thing about YTTV is I can record without any cap and I can resume seeing something I don't have time at the moment for.
  6. Townes Van Zandt hurt, but maybe he had nothing left in the tank at 52. Saw Guy Clark many times and took my kids to see him at Richardson WIldflower Festival late in his career. He was great and someone to emulate when he'd forget a lyric. He'd stop and yell goddamnit before starting again. dBoon of the Minutemen was a big loss in the mid 80's. That band was great. Nice to see Mike Watt play with the Stooges. So going forth would be Iggy and Ray Davies. Nice Jarmausch documentary on the Stooges is on Amazon. Still floors me how good the Kinks were. And violent--being banned from the USA because on their first US tour the bassist beat up a union dude and then the drummer clocked Dave Davies on stage and put him in the hospital.

    Dad music

My college aged daughter recorded ten songs on her iPhone and sent them to me a few years ago. It was a blast to hear her on guitar and homemade percussion singing American Music by Violent Femmes, Tom Dooly, Folsom Prison Blues, In Spite of Ourselves, more murder ballads and some Irish folk songs. And last December on trip to big bend my college aged son just wanted to hear the songs he would wake up to when in middle school and early high school. Apparently I was listening to a lot of Decembrists and Iron and Wine, Flight of conchords and a bunch of songs from the tv show Ideal.

17 yo Reyna goes in at 72nd minute for Dortmund.
  9. And what makes this sadder is that Sims played really well. So do opposing coaches get nights off before playing Texas? They certainly don’t have to be concerned with contesting offensive schemes and they can put their weakest defenders on Texas non mobile wings.
  10. Although USSF has no youth coaches appointed except for Kreis for U23s and Berhalter has made more mistakes than the team has scored goals, I like this Camp Cupcake call up of U23 potential key players with regular call ups. GK Hamid, Turner, or Johnson // MarcinkowskiRB Cannon // AraujoCB Long // McKenzieCB Zimmerman // GladLB Gasper // VinesM6 Yuiell // Cappis, KayoM8/M10 (2 of) Lletget, Roldan, // Aaronson, Pomykal RW Morris // LlanezFW Zardes // FerreiraLW Arriola // Lewis
  11. Purgatory’s kind of like the in-betweeny one. You weren’t really shit, but you weren’t all that great either. Like Tottenham.
  12. This is a preview of big 12 play on the road. Can’t shoot for shit and then get manhandled on other end.
  13. I'm going to count this one as live.
  14. The result I desire is to get a new coach. And the b.s. about "you might get somebody worse" doesn't play in this situation. This team will not press with it's new defensive assistant, so yeah it's a moot point, but I'll say the Texas half-court offense is equal to watching Blazing Saddles on the Sundance channel. What could be a potentially enjoyable watch is just muted shit.
  15. First time to watch Texas this season and isn't it ironic that the horns looked mechanical against A&M. The team as always with Smart looks like they've had their instincts coached out of them. To the point that Baker is trying to find his guy on D next to the rim and at the same time the player with the ball is within touching distance and attacking the goal. Hell, a simple defensive play that exists in 10 year old driveway basketball or pick up hoops anywhere is ignored because . Kai Jones is the only one who looks unburdened, just like Hayes and Ramey last year. Ramey who showed promise last year looks like something is in his head and Hepa who has an idea of how to play, never gets a chance. Too slow and no confidence from coaches, I guess. The picks set are horrible and there is no rolling. The offense looks to be designed as a hope and prayer that Febres bails them out with hot shooting. But with scarce penetration and no effective off the ball movement this team will get killed in conference after B12 coaches watch tape. Andrew Jones is a miracle. Thank god for him. I would switch coaches with the Ags in a heartbeat. If Buzz can got that bunch to play hard and organized defense. If Smart coached Nebo then Nebo would be at the 3 point line setting picks. Texas needs to press and run, because their half court offense sucks.
  16. Don's Party - Bruce Beresford directed this 1976 movie. Nice time capsule of seventies Australia on drunken politics. Available at amazon prime.
  17. The Kinks - Shangri-la. (Why this and not so many others. There is such a vast amount of wonderful Kinks songs, and some with the same theme, but I like the ride of this lyrically and musically.) Squeeze - Up the Junction. (Succinct, fucking succint.) Elvis Costello - Beyond Belief. Pixies - I've Been Tired. Joy Division - Transmission. (Definitely influenced by hearing this on 24 hour Party People. ) Replacements - Bastards of Young. (Shit, too many choices.) Funkadelic - One Nation Under A Groove. (Playing The Witch on repeat during Halloween discouraged the teenagers from approaching the porch, but it's only a contender) Curtis Mayfield - (Don’t Worry) If There’s a Hell Below We’re All Going to Go. (What a song!) Marvin Gaye - Can I Get a Witness. (love his early stuff) Sam Cooke - A Change is Gonna Come. (My brother prefers the Otis version, but I love the emotion and power of the original.) The Faces - I Know I'm Losing You. (The bass, keyboards, drums, hums and guitar) Leonard Cohen - Famous Blue Raincoat. (Best part of a one night stand was waking up to hearing Cohen singing this song.) Tom Waits - Step Right Up. (Song magic.) Richard Thompson - When the Spell is Broken. (what a fuckin guitarist) I know the Kinks were mentioned prior, but don't think any of these other artists were. And there are so many artists that could have been added.
  18. Add Magnificent Ambersons prior to Casablanca.
  19. Well, this is Kermit Davis saying this, so take it at face value. I just picture Kermit doing a standup routine here. Prove me wrong Texas. Prove me wrong Texas. tex-miss scrimmage
  20. I was perplexed and pissed watching them play in the NIT. Why didn't they play with that urgency in the regular season.
  21. The Squid and the Whale - As a child of divorce and a divorced father this is a brilliant movie.
