  1. Having paid for this shiny new appliance we expected to work as advertised, until we get it home and turns out to be a piece of junk, but we keep using it because of how much we paid. Well, two points. 1) do we deserve another appliance and we don't really know whether the next appliance will work satisfactory? 2) the appliance is just in second gear, let's see if it gets into the next gear. Sunk costs v. wishful thinking = different tolerance levels
  2. I can understand your historical point of view, but let me say what the fuck does it matter. If Smart's results are essentially equal to the last years of Barnes then he deserves to get fired. And it doesn't matter what Texas fans deserve. If the current coach isn't passing muster then you get another one and that's the way it is at any school. I don't know which coach Texas could reasonably get and it's a crap shoot on getting the right one, but I'd want one that would kick Dylan's ass for loafing last night. Of all the problems with this team, effort should be the easiest one to fix. I've criticized Osetkowski and Roach for not having much basketball IQ, but when that is combined with lack of effort by your team leaders (seniors), then that reveals a toxic atmosphere and it is time for the coach to go. Again, who gives a fuck what the fans deserve or think. This is a decision to be made by the AD.
  3. How does this Tennessee team rank among Barnes best teams at Texas or Clemson? I saw them in person get beat by Loyola and predicted it based on seeing Barnes' prior teams under perform in the tourney, but haven't seen this year's version.
  4. My theory on Texas' competitiveness is that good teams will play their style against Texas. Hall of Fame coaches are not breaking down opponents in non-conference regular season games. UNC will always run the secondary break and play poor defense. Texas has enough athletes to be competitive in an open game. Exception last year at WV where the guards could not handle the pressure. Average teams with good coaches will combat Texas' athleticism by compacting the lane and making Texas shoot outside. Similar to bunkering in soccer but Texas doesn't have the game plan to unlock these defenses and you get games like Radford and so on. Tonight's game should be interesting as TCU under Dixon has beaten Texas three out of four (only loss was double OT game last year), but they don't have depth this year.
  5. I'll take this guy. https://theathletic.com/762393/2019/01/16/nate-oats-future-is-tbd-but-the-buffalo-coachs-present-is-pretty-great/
  6. Just saw this recently too. Mason sprechen sie deutsch pretty darn well. Also saw East of Eden on Netflix. A failing of mine is that I could only see Raymond Massey as Boris Karloff.
  7. Good: Osetkowski started rolling rather than pop. Once he rolls, it not only creates more space on the perimeter, but offside defense helps creating space for an open 3. We don't always hit the open 3, but it's a good shot. Or is this bad, because he only half-rolled sometimes and spent plenty of time popping as well. Fair: Better offensive rebounding in first half. Sims had 7 rebounds overall. And then let McCormack get 3 in second half. Bad: Mitrou-Long's defense. He gave up too many offensive drives that resulted in easy shots. Didn't see Tech game, but he gave up key offensive drive in OSU game in last 3 minutes, when OSU could barely score. KU shot nearly 54%. And the dreck at the end.
  8. I'm all for hiring Keatts. I like the intensity his teams play with. Also, as an added bonus--NC State would go after Barnes and he may leave to be home and play in the ACC again. Maybe Tennesse would look to hire another UT coach. And I would laugh my ass off.
  9. I'm going for the angle of Texas doing so well in conference and tourney that UCLA hires him away. Win-Win on both counts.
  10. I thought Culver's success had a lot to do with Texas playing a lot with 4 guards. Texas has had success against two defensive teams and they have attacked the basket better than all season. It will be interesting to see what happens when a conference team packs the lane to prevent the drive. Osetkowski had his best game by far. Roach's body language off the ball on offense does not look good, but that was a hell of a tip-in.
  11. If Smart and Texas were deceptive about Roach being sick, the question of "why" deserves an answer. Roach has been sat for other non-disclosed behavioral issues, why go the sick route for the P game? What benefit does Shaka get from putting out this deception? Why not just say Roach is sitting for undisclosed reasons due to behavior?
  12. This sounds like a Penders move. Oh wait, did Shaka call/text the player at night too? I understand your thought process, but a new coach dealing with new players can be construed a number of ways. If your examples are all from that season, then it is hard for me to believe that there is a pattern here. But in the end the argument is irrelevant to me, all coaches play mind games and/or use motivation tactics. The relevance is that whatever Shaka is using is not working. I'm in the camp that he definitely has to go.
  13. To me there is no bigger factor for Shaka's ineffectiveness than Coleman. Coleman was the guard that he coveted and coached in world championship. He was the guy who was supposed to have an inherent understanding of the game that Shaka wanted. He has looked like shit all year. And this leaves testament to the theory stated earlier that Shaka doesn't know what he wants. And if that's the case he's got to go.
  14. Attending the game is much worse as the full level of ineptitude is so broadly apparent. DO aggressively backs down the defender then timidly takes the shot to open the game. WTF. Providence easily traps the stupid weave in the first half and there is no adjustment by Texas in the second half. Since the weave doesn't work then it's just one on one shit basketball. Watch Providence and there is a pick in the lane and Hayes can't defend the easy 10 foot jump shot. Texas was as bad on defense this game as they were on offense. Providence had a high number of unforced turnovers to keep Texas in the game. Even the floor slaps were discordant. Fans blaming the refs and not the coaches. Texas basketball is Koyaanisqatsi. Highlight of the night for me was shaking TJ Ford's hand. Ballers from SW Houston.

  16. How little respect is there for Texas basketball? Driving down from Dallas, I listen to the wrap up of the Lake Travis playoff game and then twelve minutes of commercials on 104.9 before they break away to the basketball game. First thing I heard was that Roach was being subbed in, no idea of how many minutes into the game. Nothing says we don't give a shit about you when the flagship station runs commercials instead of the game.

    Playlist help

Started working from home and trying not to be a hermit started attending a circuit class. The music played is 80's new wave and dance. It's paint by numbers, so I want to give the teacher a cd of some good music that won't offend the other participants. Here is what I've got so far in no particular order. Rock Lobster - B52s Pata Pata 2000 - Miriam Makeba We Don't Need That Fascist Groove Thang - Heaven 17 Soulful Strut - Young Holt Unlimited El Watusi - Ray Baretto Town Called Malice - Jam Superman - Kinks This is Radio Clash - Clash The Passenger - Iggy Pop Atomic - Blondie Death on Two Legs - Queen Sugar on my Tongue - Talking Heads Funny How Time Slips Away - Al Green/Lyle Lovett Juarez - Flaco Jiminez Sexy Coffee Pot - Tony Alvon & The Bel Airs Rocks Off - Rolling Stones Last Night - Mar-Keys Don't wanna bump with no big fat woman - Joe Tex
  18. Have to say kudos to the coaching staff for trying something different with the dribble hand offs on the perimeter. Not sure how effective it was, but it did make Purdue move on defense. I wish the all of the guards played as hard as Ramey does. He created a extra ball possession by working hard and creating a turnover. Too many times Texas just ball watches and the other team gets what should be a 50/50 ball. I see DO and Febres do it repeatedly. Hepa needs to give a class on how to feed the post as he is the only one who does it adequately. Coleman and Roach played better this game, but why did it take so long to double team Edwards. That's a coaching faux-pas. Don't care about starters, but do like seeing finishers when it's Hepa with 23 and DO 17; and Hayes with 26 and Sims with 14. Good win. Radford and VCU have given the blueprint in defending Texas. We complain about all the three point shots, but any decent coach is going to pack the lane and make Texas beat them from outside. I think Texas needs to press and run. Their half court offense is not good enough and no consistent outside shooting it's too easy to defend. Press and run and play 11 players. Add in Hamm and Liddell to the regular nine playing and go.
  19. The complete lack of confidence by Roach and Osetkowski was startling. Box score only shows 3 TO's by DO, but someone must have hedged the numbers, because he had four in a row in a key stretch of the game. When it's the two seniors who are the better players on the team and have no confidence, then you've got to look in the coach's direction. Sims, Hayes and Coleman did ok last night, but VCU got offensive rebounds every time that Sims and Hayes went for a block. I like the way Hepa on offense is always in attack stance, but he needs to improve his footspeed on defense and coaches need to line him up on someone who is as slow as he is. Ramey had such confidence in his shot and game at the beginning of the year and against decent defensive teams like Arkansas. I wonder if the coaching staff has coached that out of him. Will have to see if he has bounce-back games. What this team needs is someone with the character of TJ Ford who will tell the coaches to back off. Shaka should be gone at the end of the year, but buyouts may keep him on the floor.
  20. Is that because DO will be gone?
  21. What a horrible coaching job last night. The lack of communication between players and players and coaches was shocking. New strategy to fix this team is to get DO and Sims in foul trouble early, so Hepa and Hayes (the guys with basketball IQ) play more minutes. Ramey should already move Febres to spot minutes. I'll give Coleman a pass from last night, but him being foul friendly was very similar to last year. Long will help there to close out games. Lineup should be Coleman, Ramey, Roach, Hepa and Hayes. Use DO, Sims, Long, Febres as backups. No more 39 minutes for DO. No more 5 minutes for Hepa. No more standing around the perimeter watching guys get trapped. Play the 5 smartest players and damn the consequences. If Shaka runs off Hepa for lack of playing time, then he needs to be fired immediately.
  22. The team needs to run, because their half court offense is largely ineffective. Too many times DO popped when he should have rolled. Player has to read what the defense is doing and EIU was playing the pop. They did do a decent job of moving the ball around for three pointers. The addition of Long and Ramey will help Coleman. I like the possibilities of guys catching the ball and attacking. Coleman did that with a nice assist. And I especially liked that DO wasn't trying to initiate offense on the perimeter. Will get a better microscope when they play Arkansas and with Roach back.
  23. I'm not looking for any team tendencies tonight, but want to see what type of players the new faces are and see what growth there is from the old faces.
