He wants a high OBP guy up there with some pop. He had Grahovac lead off for A&M much of last year. The only other options that make sense are Mendoza (13 walks all last season), Winfield (strikeout prone) and Rodriguez (freshman). I guess maybe Farmer too but small sample size. Rodriguez seems like an obvious choice once he has some more AB’s under him if he shows he can handle it and cut down on the swing and miss.

Listening to what Schloss said pregame and postgame on the radio and you can tell he is not thrilled that he inherited this tournament on the schedule. Said Texas isn’t afraid to play anyone but we should always be opening at home in basically a tuneup series and that “we’ll see what he is talking about after this first year in the SEC”. Then said after the game that we “didn’t open with some team up north who hasn’t been outside in months.” He definitely doesn’t sugarcoat much.

I guess I shouldn’t talk too much because our schedule would probably look similar if we weren’t committed to some of these non-con tournaments before Schloss took over. Will be interesting to see when the metrics come out but my guess is we will end up playing one of the 3 toughest non-con slates in the league. Our only layup is Dartmouth while most other teams have 3 layups and 1 semi-tough weekend.

Is this where I softly whisper the bullpen was actually decent last year and the starters were much more of our issue? Mercer got put in a tough situation in the 9th with 2nd and 3rd and 1 out. Hard to blame that on him. The 10th is all him. We fired all our known bullets tonight so will be interesting to see how the rest of the weekend goes.

This would be a very bad cycle to lose Flood or Baker. Nansen would step right in for PK if that were to happen. Would suck but PK doesn't do much recruiting and Nansen has a lot of skins on the wall. Milwee, Joseph or Jackson would suck but wouldn't lose too much sleep. Jackson maybe would be a little more frustrating than the other two because we haven't been able to find stability at the WR coach spot. Banks I just don't think would ever make much sense as a NFL coach. Doesn't fit his biggest strengths.

I didn’t realize Rutgers had extended Orphey twice the last two years and his salary was up to 500k. For a school like Rutgers that is a pretty big chunk of change for a position coach. Apparently Kiffin tried to hire him away to Ole Miss at some point.

Florida On3 site reporting Will Harris is taking a job at Miami. Noting because he was brought up a bunch during our DB coaching search.

OB with a few notes: * The loss of running backs coach Tashard Choice to the Detroit Lions is considered a significant blow behind the scenes. Not only was Choice viewed as an excellent coach and team leader, but he was also a key recruiter, especially in Georgia. That state was successfully navigated by Choice during recruiting, which makes replacing him difficult, though not impossible, according to my sources. * One NFL source told me that Choice wanted a larger role in game planning and putting together the offense. Additionally, he desired to work with the offensive line, an opportunity he will have in Detroit. * Texas wanted Choice to remain on staff, but Detroit was determined to hire him. How much? Detroit paid Choice’s buyout of $850,000 to hire him. * I was informed that Sarkisian is currently assembling a list of candidates. As of Thursday, it was too early to determine which coaches Sarkisian will target. * However, I have not yet heard either former Texas running backs coach Stan Drayton or Oregon running backs coach Ra’Shad Samples heavily mentioned as candidates. When the Dallas Cowboys pursued Choice a few weeks ago, neither was viewed as a frontrunner for the role. * Hopefully, for Texas fans, Sarkisian has the same success replacing Choice as he did in finding Blake Gideon’s replacement. I was told Mark Orphey interviewed in Austin on Monday and immediately emerged as Sarkisian’s top choice. Orphey aced the interview, and his ability to recruit in Houston was a huge selling point. * According to my sources, it is unclear if Orphey will coach safeties or cornerbacks at Texas. I was told Orphey can coach both positions. However, Sarkisian’s primary goal was to hire Orphey, and he will eventually determine which positions Terry Joseph and Orphey will coach after securing his commitment.
