I seem to be the only necro-bumper here, but here goes nothin' (again).
Will be back in January mid-week for a few nights. Need a place for 4 people to cocktail and socialize. I normally do Midnight Cowboy.
Looking at anything downtown or south.
Any other recs?
Relocated from Lufkin to downtown Dallas this year. My 86 year old father relocated from Lufkin back to Central Texas. In-laws in Jacksonville with two BILs in Houston.
We have already issued notice that we will not be available for the holidays. All of them. Not traveling. No big trip or anything. Just staying home, goofing off, enjoying the freedom from drama. We need a break from too many recent years of family fuckery.
We'll send nice gifts, though.
That's my story. Stickin' to it.
Will have to fly in for a funeral on the northside. One night, maybe two. Got Hilton points to burn. Been a while since I've done a Hilton stay in town.
Is the Doubletree near the airport still good? Embassy Suites? Also considering the Homewood Suite in Stone Oak.
On track this year as usual, and it always feels so good. We have no debt this year and have had nothing to spend our money on, which is kinda nice.
401k and HSA will hit perfectly with the remaining payroll checks left.
Already contributed and then Backdoor Roth'd both of our IRAs.
Emergency Savings is at the amount we want in an AMEX HYSA.
$1,000 a month goes into my Fidelity "play account" Brokerage for Stonks.
Any excess cash goes into VMSXX in our Vanguard Brokerage. When it hits a certain limit, it gets 3-Fund-Bogle'd.
Damn, it feels good to be a gangster...
I get that. It always chaps my ass when I actually crank out something that's sub-standard. Just so damn disappointing. And, every time, "I should know better".
Fortunately, it doesn't happen often...ha!
I am brining 4# of Chicken Thighs right now. They will get seasoned with my own Cajun Dust and a few pats of Butter, and will go in a baking dish to roast at 275 tonight until they hit 170 or so. Then I will hand-pull them and put them in a pot of Creole tomorrow, along with my own Tasso, some Smothered Okra, and some Gulf Scrimps.
It's what we do...cheers!
If you like to pull out early...no judgment here. I like for things to get good and...carmelized. Much more satisfaction all-around than pulling out early.
Toss veggies in Olive Oil and season however you wish. Doesn't hurt if you hit them with a bit of citrus, or vinegar, or hot sauce, or soy sauce, either.
400 degrees in a sheet pan. Toss/stir every 10 minutes.
Most veggies will be beautifully roasted in 20 or 30 minutes.
This works for just about anything.
Took a while for all the pieces to fall into place, but it looks like I will be a downtown resident soon.
Taking possession of a new apt on 5/1 at 1900 Pacific Residences (John Kirtland's place). Cool people, great amenities, truly nice apt that is getting an all-new refurb right now.
Things are moving fast. Gotta figure out how/when to move and get my Lufkin house on the market.
On to the next chapter! Looking forward to terrorizing the city soon...!
I had Brick & Bones the other night, and it was heavenly. I'll be moving right down the street from it in a few weeks. I guess I should just plan on being fat.
You're absolutely right. Was totally mandatory.
I never realized what a fixture I was there until the bartender said, "Where were you last Friday?" That's when I figured my Friday-Night-Regular status had already been established. Whether alone, with a girlfriend, or gathering a group of friends/coworkers, the Hofbrau on Friday was religion to me.
On a mushroom-related front: I remember the two best places for fried mushrooms being right next to each other. Completely different style, though, but the ones at Maggie's were pretty damn good, too. Was my place for vetting dates back in the day. Couldn't take just any random skank to Hofbrau, ya know?
