  1. His name was searched on this site and I watched the Louisiana game over very carefully looking for his number. Excuse me for a seasonal overstatement. I do not recall seeing him in the Spring Game either. The pathetic excuses for sarcasm on this site add very little.
  2. Alfred was a star in the Alamo Bowl, but I've seen nothing on him this Fall. Is he still around?
  3. First game was Tech in 1958; I was 9. Don't remember much except I ate a lot and there was some weird person in a Zorro outfit riding around on a black horse. Seats were in the North End Zone; Horns won 12-7. My Little League football team ("Colts") had some sort of promo tickets so we got in free. My Dad drove us from Killeen in our 1958 Pontiac station wagon; it was a night game, so I'd bet we were all asleep before we got to Pfleugerville.

We have the excellent reviews of the 1963 and 1969 National Championship Seasons; I wonder if there will be one for the 1970 National Championship Season. I know it was slightly tarnished by the 1971 Cotton Bowl loss to Notre Dame du Lac, but it was a legitimate NC under the way this was determined at the time.
  6. When I was sworn in (1977) one of the Justices on the Idaho Supreme Court (McFadden) had read the law in someone's office and did not go to law school before becoming a lawyer.
  7. Ok, Lithgow sucks on the gas pipe; is Perry now going to reveal to us that he went to law school after WW1? The team is in place with Della (L) and Paul Drake waiting in the wings. I've read all of Rex Stouts, Raymond Chandlers, Dashiel Hammetts (not the Black magazines), Ross McDonalds, John Sandfords, and Michael Connellys--but not a single Earle Stanley Gardner- so I don't know if the present series has anything to do with the original books, but, I'm mildly curious. Just ordered the Kindling edition of The Case of the Velvet Claws. Apparently the first of 55 cases.
  8. Screwpull-I have had many different corkscrews over the years, but the screwpull works the best and is all I've used for over ten years.
  9. Eleven of us did it in 2013; we used a Flagstaff outfit, PRO, who equipped us with rafts, frames, oars, coolers, and food. They do not provide guides but want people who have fairly heavy rafting experience (12 Main Salmon trips, two Hells Canyon). Lots of water and even more rocks. Excellent service in every respect. I would suggest carefully vetting all who go with you; we took on an old guy at the last minute because he had Colorado experience--which was unnecessary. Biggest asshole in the Western Hemisphere. He pounded cans to flatten them with his hammer (this has to be done to save space in the garbage). The only problem was he insisted on doing this at 4:00 in the morning. I asked him several times, very politely, to find some other time to do this. He was adamant. Finally I told him if he did it again, he would be diving for his hammer. He was like this in several ways; it is just hard to put up with someone like that for over two weeks.
  10. I keep watching those LHN rerun games. A couple of notes: 1. Keith Jackson, in the later stages of his storied career, developed a fetish for saying "Times Out" rather than "Time Outs" Keith's usage might even be correct, but no one else uses it and it sounds stupid. Well, with 54 seconds left on the clock in the 2005 Texas-Michigan Rose Bowl, he got so excited he said "Time Outs." I was sorta shocked, and kinda inferred that Dan Fouts was also taken aback. Almost as funny as Fouts quoting Caesar (from Suetonius) with "Veni, Vidi, Vici." Which Keith translated for us as "Ah yes, how sweet the wine.." The latter was followed by a mumbled chuckle. 2. With 1:24 left in the 2005 Texas v. Ohio State game the camera turned to the crowd shot. There it was, in clear focus. Some excited Horns fan had his (obviously male) right hand squarely on the right boob of a pretty young lady wearing orange. Gary Danielson said something about the part already starting. 3. Cannot recall the game (perhaps one or two too many Martinis--7/1 Tanqureay/Noilly Prat) but there was a prolonged discussion of a misfire by 'Ol Smokey.' Someone had come up just inches short on a TD run and the cannoneers fired the artillery too soon. They were trying to reload the thing as quickly as possible and the commentators went on a long tongue-in-cheek discussion about premature firings. "It happens to everyone," "They always expect you to reload immediately" etc., etc. This went on for about a minute and it was obvious they were no longer talking about the cannon but personal experiences.
  11. Watching all the older games on LHN, I've noticed the evolution of shoulder pad sizes. Tony Brackens had pads that looked like he had a body pillow wrapped around his neck. In the Academy Bowl a couple years ago a Missouri DT looked like his shoulder pads were a pair of wet washrags. Is there any explanation for this deflation?
  12. Why do footballs used "in the college game" have stripes on them? Watching the '69 Texas vs. Arkansas game for the umpteenth time, I noticed the balls did not have the white stripes, but they do now. As a result, just about every pass looks a little wobbly on tv.
  13. When will the agroids be required to have womyn cheerleaders (pardon me, Yell leaders)?
  14. The LHN produced excellent reviews of the 1963 and 1969 National Championship teams and their seasons. I watch them pretty often due to my attachment to UT. (Went to the Navy vs. Texas Cotton Bowl as well as the Notre Dame du Lac game following the 1969 season.) At some point last year I posted a query about whether the LHN and whether they were, following up on the 1963 production, working on one for 1969. (Thankfully, they did.) As some of us CoVid eligible old farts will recall, UT won a National Championship in 1970 as well. Naturally, I am again wondering if a production honoring the 1970 National Champions is now in the works. I am fully aware that the 1970 NC is under a type of cloud because the Horns lost to the Irish in the Cotton Bowl. However, both the UPI and AP named Texas the National Champs prior to the Bowl Games--as they always did back in those days.
