  1. Was lucky enough to not watch the game. Just watched the highlights. 1. Forget the umpire b.s. 2. even watching highlights, I could tell there was something different in our intensity in inning 9. We finally woke up. 3. That Melendez at bat needs to happen early and often in the next game. We need someone who can stand up there and actually battle the pitcher, make contact, foul balls, etc. Make him throw 10 pitches in several at bats early in the game. Don't let him get comfortable. 4. Pierce - Do your damn job! 5. That weasly little horns down was irritating, only because he wasn't brave enough to do it so everybody could see. Wow! Young man, if you're going to do it, you need to own it. I hope we respond with an intensity that the Texas fans deserve. I just had a flashback to Jose running to outside the center field fence with the state of Texas flag, waving it wildly to get the fans going as we were trying to get the team going against some regional team. If the SEC is really better than us that is life, but let's go down with everything we've got. Tomorrow I predict we show up with focusness, and we win, about 3-1.
  2. Back in the day I really enjoyed Frank Broyles with Keith Jackson, especially the Texas-OU games. Frank's accent was so bad, it was memorable, but he really knew his Xs and Os. Oh boy, I can still hear Frank talking about Brad Shearer, he pronounced it Shearuh.."Keith, that Brad Shearuh is so quick Oklahoma had to throw out some of the plays in the playbook this week...they simply cannot block him"......Frank benefited from following Bud Wilkinson who was so boring he probably put all of Oklahoma to sleep when he commented on games. Move up to a more modern era and Ron Franklin on ESPN was the best Play-by-play man. "Count it off at 10, 15 yards for....." Never mind the era, the fact that Keith seemed to make every broadcast partner better may have been his most important feature. Even in the end when he had obviously lost his stuff, Keith had a hunch Vince would put the team on his back and will the team to victory. Of course we all felt like that was the only way to win, but Keith really believed it as well. Gus Johnson does as good a job as any on play-by-play now. Are there any decent analysts? The pros had the funniest, the back and forth between Dandy Don and Howard. "This is Howad Cosell...What you have seen tonight is a man take complete, total control of the game, and these fans, these fans all finally have something to cheer about". That was about Earl, the night Earl rushed for 199 yards 4 TDs against the Dolphins and was so tired in the end zone at the end of his 81 yard TD his teammates had to help him to the sidelines.
  3. So we win Tuesday, Thursday, and then Ty pitches again Friday. Then after we win Friday, we win again Saturday to win the bracket. No problem, right?
  4. how sharp was your reliever? Was this his standard performance or was he a bit off? Did he pitch more than usual tonight or was this about his average?
  5. I take partial credit because I called my dad after we had 15 strikeouts and told him the team forgot to bring the bats to Omaha, and told him if anybody has the pitching to come out of the loser's bracket it is us. That is not exactly the correct timing, but it did happen towards the end. I am still feeling the same as earlier; disappointed but not throwing in the towel. We will see this team again, I predict.
  6. We certainly need Coby Kerlin to jet in to Omaha and show the guys how it is done. When you are up against a pitcher like this, you have one or two batters whose entire job is to stand there, foul off pitches like it's going out of style and eventually either walk or get hit by a pitch, and therefore wear out the pitcher. Coby set the NCAA record for walks in a season, about 105 one year, his freshman year I think, and the next year someone, maybe Coach Gus. encouraged him to go ahead and swing at a few pitches. Then he became that super threat that would make pitchers wilt during the 6th, 7th innings. It was very predictable. We've got the pitching to come out of the losers bracket, so I am disappointed, but not throwing in the towel by any means.
  7. Just watched on Peacock the Rahm against the fence saga. Rahm-a really great rep. for the game, thanked the official twice! Cool to hear.
  8. I am revisiting this thread and lol! Wow! It is is all coming back to me now, because it really gets serious now. I am moving 500 miles further north, to the Arctic Circle. Groceries are even MORE expensive up there, so the food tactics will become paramount. I am thinking about prime days now. I plan to purchase a vacuum sealer, and smoke two briskets at my sister-in-laws house here in the metroplex. Then, I can vacuum seal the sliced briskets. The brisket meat will be part of my two totes that will be baggage....two totes of frozen food, all of the way from the metroplex to Selawik AK, 99770. It's actually located above the arctic circle. So, the key to the food operation is keeping the food frozen at various points along the way. The super good news is that American has a non-stop flight, and I paid for that flight in March. I am flying premium economy, great seat at a reasonable price. I have a motel with a walk-in freezer waiting for me in Anchorage. The other non-negotiable is freezer space here in the metroplex close to the airport. I talked to a manager at one of those freezer places back in April I think, and he will rent a pallet in a sub-zero freezer for $40 for 24 hours, I think. That gives me 21 or so hours to buy the frozen food, and get it in the freezer in the two totes. Then the situation of the carry-on comes up. I am thinking about more serious protein this time. I could smoke a third brisket and take that as a carryon, but I think that would be way too much fat, and take up space I could use for clothes. When I arrive in Anchorage I will mail almost all of my clothes. It is much cheaper to mail than to pay the crazy high, $1.15 per pound from Kotzebue to Selawik. Will update this as I go along. Will happily take suggestions for high-protein snacks as a carryon. Total trip from metroplex to Selawik is about three days. Not looking forward to Anchorage, except for the 0% sales tax. Will eat at Olive Garden for sure. Reserved a rent-a-car back in April, before the rent-a-car crisis hit.
  9. Just for grins and future reference I looked at air fare and motels. A cheap-o like me could stay in Bellevue for $80 a night, and pay air fare from DAL to OMA and back for about $500. So $1217 motel + 500 air fare for the whole thing. Is it worth it? Hell yes! I would do that in a heartbeat. Of course it's a lot easier to just be Nostradamus and make reservations in March, like V-77 did. Now that we're potentially "back", I will not hesitate to book this next March. Only thing left is tickets and getting to the ballpark. It's probably a pretty far hike to the ballpark from Bellevue. Looks like 10.1 miles, have to wear my 2005 Rose Bowl shirt and throw up the horns while walking to hitch a ride.
  10. obsessed with rest probably cause we're old.
  11. okay, so we play Sunday, almost certainly the prime time game? Our opponent plays today, so they have one less day of rest. Am I right that the proper amount of rest is critical at this time? I am guessing the team leaves for Omaha tomorrow? The cool thing is there should be no distractions, except back in the day the MLB draft would happen during the CWS. I think they may have changed that.
  12. Wow! Makes me wish I was able to attend. This is so great! Whoa! I just realized I am going to be in the Austin area(RR) when the CWS ends. There is one more visit to Disch-Falk to make this year, and that is to welcome home the 2021 National Champs! I will make sure to bring my parents who are getting up there.(80s) I've got a feeling. We are the favorites, being the highest remaining seed left.
  13. "Where are the Aggies now?" was Gus at the end of our regional in Austin, after Aggy had lost to LSU 2 games in a row in Bryan. He said later he was so damn tired it just came out of his mouth. Old-timers can tell stories, evidently Coach Gus was a worrier and a non-sleeper this time of year. He would stay up late going through all of the possible scenarios pitching matchups etc. Still one of the greatest lines ever about a rival.
  14. Is Del Conte a giant, or are the people about 4 foot 11 inches tall?
  15. so, it looks like it might be the Super SEC tourney after all? SEC still has a possibility of five teams in Omaha...boo on that..c'mon Notre Dame(cough) N. C. State and Arizona. Have no problem rooting for the others, but Notre Dame? yuck.
  16. Before I read through the entire thread, let me say I think I may have watched the game from the prettiest natural setting of the night. I am in Valdez AK for a week, taking a course. "Little Switzerland" today was 100% sunshine and 62 degrees. It is now cloudy, but at game time it was 62. The mountains still have a little bit of snow, and I found a nice little bar to watch the game on a great looking TV at the Best Western. I live in the bush of Alaska, so this is the first game I have seen this year. Overall, this was an extremely clean game. Weird observations from a weird person who left Texas to teach in Alaska: 1. What in the wide world of sports are those stupid looking oven mitts? Are we going to pull a cake out of a hot oven after we finish running the bases? 2. The ump gave us that first high-inside strike that I think I have read about here several times recently. I don't know why that stuck with me. 3. The S. Florida coach with the long-sleeve sweatshirt! Huh? It's 90+ degrees, right? I thought maybe he's trying to psych up somebody that heat is no big deal to them, because Florida, whatever. 4. Dumb no-call review on the stolen base. Our guy appeared to be safe to me. 5. The S. Florida DH who hit the curve ball halfway to Elgin. Wow! Obviously his scouting report was out-of-this world good. He knew the curve was coming. 6. I've read so much on here about base running problems. Good to see no issues tonight. 7. Ty falling off the mound toward first base was a little concerning, but who cares when he puts in a performance like tonight. 8. Fundamentals. S. Florida had them, except when they didn't, like the exchange problem and then the overly dramatic, almost dropping the ball on a fly again later. We had perfect fundamentals all night long. 9. I hope our hitters understand that this type of performance will not win games in Omaha. It might get us to Omaha, but if we do this in Omaha, we will be 2 and 'cue. Wake up the bats for tomorrow and let's win about 10-3 to finish this thing.
  17. Can I get an update? ESPN 2 or ESPN U?
  18. which brings up the question of how many SEC in Omaha this year. The one obvious one, and then I am thinking just one more. Can't figure out if it will be Arky or Vandy, but I think one of those two is getting beaten this weekend. Would be really cool to see three teams from Texas and only two from SEC in Omaha.
  19. You know ESPN is pulling for LSU bigtime, with the coach retiring. They will get plenty of quality airtime this weekend and if they make it to Omaha, it's gonna be all LSU, all the time. I wouldn't mind seeing LSU go out today.
  20. Man, I have totally forgotten this super-regional stuff. If necessary, all three games would be in Austin?
  21. So Charlie throws out the first pitch? lol, too much fun.
  22. speaking of smoked, living here in Alaska, a man once brought me some smoked salmon to taste....Damn! As the saying goes, good enough to make you want to slap your mama! Funny, the first time I heard that saying was 1992, as a brand new management trainee at Luby's. Thank you Wayne Shirley for that.
