All things people have mentioned previously, the first two of which are brought on by the fact that I had to fly economy last minute on an international flight the other day:
People who stand up/hang around the gate before your boarding group is called: eat a bullet.
People who listen to videos out loud/talk on speaker phones in public places: literally fuck your own face**
People who whisper/talk to each other during a movie: go play in traffic.
**caveat posed as a question to Surly dads, since I am about to join that group: is there a reason why so many people let their kids listen to shit out loud on iPads and iPhones vs. plugging in headphones and fixing the volume? I assume there has to be an actual reason vs. every living parent being inconsiderate.
Piggy backing on the above, does anyone have a go to for quality sweaters (maybe a step below BC) for the colder months? I gave up on retail button downs in favor of a local shirt maker for the warm weather months (excellent decision), but I haven’t made a similar break through on sweaters.
I think at least me, Penelope, UpperWestSide and nychorn, and maybe Stunn? There used to be others on the old site.
It’s a long walk across town for me, but I’ve spent way too much money at A-1 Records, Discovery Wine and Mast Books in your neck of the woods.
Barbarian. Not giving any commentary, as it’s best to go in blind. Glad i saw it.
Seeing Pearl tomorrow night. X has been either my first or second favorite movie of the year, so can’t wait to see this.
You answered your question in my opinion. Just go the next time you are in New York. I’ve used both Midtown and Soho locations. The former will be less crowded and will likely have an older salesman (for better or worse).
@Burt Macklin you may have already addressed elsewhere, but curious what you are seeing as the reason(s) for the dramatic change in defensive results through 2 games. Better effort, better execution, changes in scheme, a combination? Or is this just a small sample size and there are red flag warnings?
I’m currently in Aix En Provence having just come from the Riviera. Assuming you are going before the end of September, as others have said, given the amount of time probably best to just bounce around between Antibes and Menton. A great train connects each of the beach towns. You would need a rent car to really explore deeper than the immediate surrounding areas, but I’ll say that parking in the actual beach town areas really sucks. A few thoughts:
From the Eze Sur Mer train station, you can hike up the Nietzche path to the old preserved village of Eze. It’s touristy to be sure, but still pretty cool and the views of the Riviera from the very top of the garden are great. The hike requires shoes and water and you to be in decent shape; it’s not a leisurely stroll but tourists do it every day.
Menton is much lower key with an Italian vibe. Cool town.
St Jean Cap Ferrat is beautiful and has the Rothschild grounds. The Four Seasons on the tip the peninsula is stunning, but hits the wallet fucking hard. Villa French Sur Mer is right there and also cool.
Le Sentier du Littoral is a nice little walk along the coast of Antibes. Need a car for access.
A bit further inland, but St Paul de Vence is a cool preserved village to walk around.
Cannes is a dump.
I finally went to Laser Wolf last week. It continues to blow me away that a place with that vibe exists in Williamsburg, but it was awesome and the view is incredible.
Watched Memoria last night in 35mm. I was honestly a little bored for the first hour or so, but the last 25 minutes were pretty mesmerizing. If this kind of deliberate, unique film is your cup of tea, worth seeing the next time it is showing in your hometown.
I spent a lot of late nights at the Mirage, Elsewhere and Nowadays in my younger days (i.e., 3 years ago). Great venues to let loose.
A terrific afternoon.
KD is obviously a different guy, but there is no chance in hell that is true. He won’t miss a game absent injury even if it’s for Brooklyn. He just isn’t wired liked that. For all of his perceived shortcomings, it’s clear to anyone paying attention to him that he just fucking loves the game of basketball more than anything else.
Did you end up staying at l’Abbaye? I’m trying to find a hotel in either Staint-Germaine or Marais and struggling with finding the right one. Thinking of doing the Terrace Apartment at Abbaye, or Cour des Vosges.
