  1. The preferred nomenclature is Asi...er, nevermind.
  2. We knew Parker Braun was mobile and would maul defenders as a pulling guard. But I've also been quite impressed with his pass protection so far. Good technique, keeps the guy in front of him and moves his feet instead of reaching. That development is a real credit to his work ethic and the coaching from Herb Hand.
  3. Eggzackly. Watch him turn and look for the defender as soon as the ball touches his hands or perhaps a bit sooner. It was an easy enough catch that he thought he had it. Just look it into the hands for the easy TD man.
  4. I missed one very important thing in real time that's going to be key against some teams and probably very helpful against the Big XII slate. It's easy to miss details amidst the disappointing loss and overall torching of the D but LSU was unable to do much in the screen game and Texas punished the receiver repeatedly. The end of LSU's first drive set the tone during a 2 play sequence: Then there was the attempted screen to Edwards-Helaire in the 3rd Q: Overall LSU was 4 of 7 for 11 yards and one KIA throwing screens and swing passes to the backs in the game. They only threw one WR screen for 9 yards. The defense denied most of the high percentage checkdowns, swing and screen passes adn forced Burrow to throw downfield. He hit some tough passes - far more than anyone who watch him previously could reasonably expect. I suspect that included our DC. In any case, the short passing options were usually covered well so there's no reason to think teams will be able to nickel and dime their way to many scores against the Texas Defense.
  5. re: the thread title, I don't think Orgeron outcoached Herman at all. LSU started with a small talent advantage and a somewhat larger advantage in experience. Herman coached well enough to completely offset that gap. Despite the well known errors, the game still came down to any one of a handful of plays on the field. I suppose teaching dirty tactics could be considered "coaching" in some circles. And O certainly did that. The clearly scheduled "injuries" on defense only were the most obvious example. LSU stopped bothering to even try legitimate pass pro and coverage techniques sometime during the 3rd Q. They were also seemingly coached to throw out a leg to trip (leg whip, 15 yd PF) when they missed their assignments. Clearly counting on the SEC refs to turn a blind eye. Most egregious example was Delpit: after getting steamrollered by Duvernay, he throws the leg out like a little bitch trying to trip #6 because he sure couldn't tackle him. That's blatant and 15 yards added to the end of the run:
  6. RC Slocum used to do the same thing. It's aggy turdition.
  7. Maybe the same committee that helped out Beck after 2017 needs to give Orlando a hand in 2019.
  8. Team Player: that's one of the highest compliments anyone can pay in Herman's culture. Roschon stepped up when his team need him. He fought hard every play. 100% effort and played smart. You can't ask for more from a true freshman changing position on a week's notice.
  9. Texas did that against a pre-season All American CB (Fulton) and a returning consensus A-A safety (Delpit). Let that sink in for a moment. The running game was decent against an enormous D Line and big, fast LBs even with limited use of misdirection. As you point out, the defense on the other hand needs work. This may be the first time I've ever seen homer fans' magical transformation wishful thinking become even a half-truth.
  10. If I'm looking at the bright side the offense threw for 400 yds in addition to forcing a bunch of DPI. Some of it was so egregious it was actually flagged. Scored on every drive of the 2nd half and 4 out of 5 were TDs. Did that to what was supposed to be one of the best defenses in the country. The defense had problems, which was the reason for the loss. No quit and HARD hitting by both the offense and defense. LSU's all-world DBs sure didn't like the contact being handed out by the Texas WRs. Plenty of positives out there even if it's still too raw for folks to really feel them.
  11. IMHO there were 2 critical strategic errors by the coaches: 1) Abandoning misdirection when it was working so well. In principle, when facing someone larger, stronger, slower and with less endurance you want to force them to run, to change directions and get them frustrated. Make them feel that all of their strength and effort are accomplishing nothing. Compound the fatigue with demoralization. That's exactly what the opening drive did to Georgia's defense. LSU's defense was clearly hyped up and over pursuing badly. The setup was perfect and the first 2 plays gashed them with misdirection. Then Herman dials up a low-percentage deep shot. A combination of a misread by Duvernay and a good tackle by Delpit on the next play forces a punt. Sustaining drives was more important than getting quick points early on. If the opening drive goes 10-12 plays, Texas likely breaks LSU's defense in the 2nd quarter instead of the 3rd. This is compounded in goal to go on the next 2 drives. LSU's DL is still fresh. Why run straight at them? It literally plays to their strength AND gives them confidence from facing (and beating) the expected instead of confusion and frustration. The defense's over focus on the run became clear with the 4th down PA pass but execution failed. That play or similar concepts like pop pass to the TE or fake lead block and pass to the flats was available on every down in goal line. 2) Getting cute with the pass rush. Occasional 3 man rushes while dropping 8 are OK if you can occasionally bring that 3rd rusher from an unexpected angle. There was too much vanilla base 3 man rush, which just gave Burrow time and confidence. I even saw a 2 man rush at one point. As if to overcompensate for that, Orlando brought a lot of 6 man pass rush as well. That got home once but also clarified the coverage read too quickly. It was kind of a bipolar performance: either and easy read of the coverage or an easy read of the pressure. What seemed most effective overall was 4 and 5 man pressures. Those allowed a good mix of unexpected angles while still keeping some doubt about the scheme in the secondary. It seemed like Orlando almost gave up by using so much cover 4 late to protect the CBs. Static 2 high safety look made it easy to read BOTH the rush and the secondary when only 4 defenders were near the LOS. That was the trap Georgia Southern fell into last week with similar results. And Orlando again overcompensated with max pressure on 3rd and 17 instead of 4 or maybe 5 pass rushers to force a quick throw while leaving enough behind to clean up.
  12. There were some genuine concerns entering the season about manning at several positions. How to replace LJ Humphrey's production at H-WR? Why with Devin Duvernay of course! #6 showed reliability and toughness in spades. Those are the two most important qualities at that position for Texas. He got tremendous production and made plays in key situations. Along with some snaps for Jake Smith, this position is in good hands. Who fills the vacated spot a Z-WR? Brennan Eagles obviously. He has the speed and the size to win a lot of 1-on-1 matchups outside. Probably an even better fit here than Duvernay was. More importantly allowed DD to move inside. Eagles had some big plays last night. How do you replace Beck's blocking presence at TE? Mostly with Cade Brewer. He was solid overall and very good at times. Doesn't blow people off the ball like Beck but Brewer created plenty of lanes leading in Power, blocking back on inside zone and getting out and engaging on the swing screen. Minor contributions from Beck and Leitao as receivers. Question adequately answered: quicker to the outside though a step down as run blockers. OMG, only one scholarship RB! Hello Roschon Johnson. That's Mr. Johnson to you. This kid was all effort and often outplayed RB1. Tough, no quit runner. Showed hands and blocking ability too. Are we SURE he hasn't played RB since 5th grade? QB3, RB2: Mr. Johnson doesn't care. Right side of the OL: Angilau and Kerstetter more than held their own. Protection broke down a few times but nothing too bad from the right side (one overload blitz and one stunt where Braun and Shack missed the switch). Could not consistently move the oversized DL early on but got good push later. Better than just decent but the strength is obviously still to the left. There are still 2 questions unanswered IMO. Field CB was a mess lass night. Kobe Boyce is not the answer, not right now. Not sure why J. Thompson and-or Watson didn't get an opportunity. Can Orlando replace Omenihu's ability to generate in-line pass rush? Coburn frequently got push up the middle while drawing double teams. There was not enough edge pressure to force the QB to step up into that push most of the time. Ossai would be a good bet at Buck LB. He was very effective as a pass rusher - a sack and a QBH while only rushing a few times. Coaches have made the decision he's more needed playing 5 yds off at Rover.
  13. Fantastic end to a disappointing day.
  14. If I'd actually said that you'd be able to quote it very easily. And don't forget to include the whole quote.
  15. I said Texas should be slightly favored at home. The early drop on 4th down was the difference in the game. Got some details wrong but got a lot right. You didn't have the guts to post any real analysis thus no risk for you. Just here to criticize other people's work. I get people like you; you obviously don't understand people like me.
  16. Weird. I put out actual analysis. There were LSU fans mostly just shit talking here. They'll get downvoted and like it.
  17. LSU needs soccer unis since they take a dive almost every play. Red card needs to be pulled out.
  18. LSU's Fatball D needs a break. "The previous play is under review."
  19. Odd how none of LSU's offensive players ever get injured after a big play...
  20. SEC crew interfering more and more blatantly in this one.
  21. Play count over 60 now. LSU DL's life bar under 10%...
  22. Funny how once the fat boys up front are no longer able to shield them from Texas' physicality, the LSU secondary sure wants no part of the head on collisions being handed out by the Horns' skill guys.
