This is a good example of the twitter misinformation machine, and why embeds should be turned off in the CR.

There are zero media reports out there that identify this individual as a republican. That appears to be totally manufactured nonsense. The situation in AZ was a man lighting a regular USPS drop box on fire, not a ballot drop box. Every article I have seen shares quotes from the investigating officers that report that the fire was not politically motivated, was not targeting the election, and the perp was an individual well known to the local police that wanted to do something to get himself arrested.

    But here we are.

Here is an article directly related to this incident:

    https://www.azfamily.com/2024/10/24/usps-blue-collection-box-damaged-by-fire-overnight-phoenix/

    Here is the police statement:

Here is another from a prior run in with police:

Replying only because I suspect a significant number of posters have Ana on ignore, just an important reminder that it's not just @tx 3 putt who posts semi-random tweets that may or may not be bullshit. Always good to be a little suspicious about news we want to see.

Hey man, the FBI said the laptop and it contents were real in 2019. I think they had a hearing in June 2024. You might want to watch the Mark Z. Interview as well. Let’s just post facts please. That article is from 2020?

You have posted two incorrect facts about the laptop so far. You stated that the 51 analyst initially claimed the laptop was not Biden's, when they actually stated that it had the earmark of being fake (as posted by @TwiceHorn). You can disagree with that assessment, but your claim was not correct.

In addition you claim in the post that both the laptop and its contents have been confirmed to be Biden's. I very much agree that the FBI has stated that the physical laptop is indeed Biden's but I see no claim that its contents were real. Some of the emails were used as evidence in Biden's trial but that is not the same as saying its contents were confirmed. The big "smoking gun" of the laptop were emails alleging corruption between Hunter, Joe, and other parties. Those have NOT been confirmed, and no trial appears to be ongoing.

I am fine with sticking to facts, but can we amend your request to "Let's just post correct facts please"?

In your opinion, have we as a human race conquered all there is to know in regards to science and physics? We have maxed out as a species even though we went from  horse and buggy to space travel in less than 100 years time.  We are at a stalemate because you acknowledge it can’t be done by us. But you refuse to acknowledge that it could be done by something else possibly.

Part of the issue is the continued misrepresentations on the pro-UFO side. I don't think there is a single person in this thread that has refused to acknowledge that all of the stories / evidence you bring up could be aliens. I haven't seen a single "Definitely not aliens". What I have seen is a lot of skepticism, a lot of "there could be other reasons", a lot of "I don't think this is the case because X/Y/Z". I see questions of what evidence would be accepted, and then handwaving when that evidence is proposed but not produced.

For those who claim we are no fun at parties, I see a hell of a lot more rigid thinking and dogma (and anger) behind alien believers than I do from skeptics.

In summary, I don't think that believing one thing as a matter of faith, but not believing another thing because of lack of evidence is necessarily irreconcilable.  You just have to be honest with yourself and others if you're reaching your conclusion based on faith, or on reasoning.  And, you shouldn't be angry or annoyed with others if they don't share your faith.  You CAN get annoyed with others when they do not apply evidence-based reasoning.

And here's the thing: I WANT to believe.  I DO believe that intelligent, spacefaring life exists in this universe (because math -- 200 billion trillion stars exist).  I expect that there are things about that life and its technology that are beyond even our capability of imagination - that is, I believe that it is POSSIBLE that such life has visited earth.  I'm just awaiting concrete proof - that is, physical evidence.

Brisket, I 100% agree with you on the bolded statement about being honest with yourself and others if you are reaching your conclusions based on faith or reasoning.

This is the only reason I am going to again bring up that it is faith, not reasoning or math, that leads you to believe that intelligent, spacefaring life exists in the world. Yes the target population of 200 billion trillion stars is super duper big but we still have no idea what the multiplier is for probability of life. It could be 1 in a hundred chance, meaning lots of life, or it could be 1 / 100 trillion trillion trillion, meaning almost certainly not any other life. Any assessment that there is likely or not likely to be life is grounded in some kind of faith.

I am definitely pro "I want there to be life" but if you ask if I think there is other life out there, it's a big old shrug of the shoulders.

I worked with her a million years ago and know lots of folks that know her from AH. Like noted above FB/Insta feeds all over her disappearance. Really tragic for her kids.
Husband apparently not cooperating with police at all.
I am not sure AH police equipped to deal with something like this.

I dont know anything about this case or the accused but if my wide was missing or murdered I sure as shit wouldn't be cooperating with the police either. I would be their number one suspect and they would be doing anything they could to pin the deed on me. Everything would be through a lawyer.

Dude....the very first post, and the story itself, "cloaked it up."  FFS, this issue is THE central issue in the highest profile state political race going on right now.  Why in the blue fuck would you expect one of the hot-button political topics of the day NOT to turn into a...political discussion?

The same reason that some posters think that going full throat in support of Israel is not CR but suggesting there may be nuance is pure CR and should not be discussed in DT. It's not political if it enforces status quo, despite of course that the status quo is in place because of generations of political beliefs.

It's a generalization I cannot abide. Yes, in the more rural parts of Texas you're going to find ignorant and bigoted people. I challenge you to name a state where that isn't true. picking on Texas is just low hanging fruit. there are plenty of bigots in New York too - but I'm guessing you don't call them out equally

The very core of Texas is built on a pile of hate and bullshit unlike any other state. The "rugged individualism" that is the root of Texas pride is just a vehicle for the in-group to shit upon the out-group. Nobody can succeed as a lone individual any state - that's why we have public roads, bridges, fire stations, etc., but in Texan culture those benefits have to be "earned" by those with resources. Rather than support public resources that go out according to actual need, it is apportioned on a select bases by individuals. That's awesome if you're white, straight, pretty, and Christian (and the right kind of Christian at that). If not, you are kindly fucked.

Of course there are awesome Texans, great and caring people who are swimming upstream to help others. But the core is rotten and will not change until Texans examine what it actually means to be Texan and why place of birth makes one exceptional. I was born and raised in Texas, and when I left 30 years ago I always assumed I'd be back but now it's one of the bottom-tier states. If I had to decide between Mississippi and Texas I honestly don't know what I'd choose. At least Mississippi knows it's a piece of shit state.

At this point in our idiocracy, I'd be surprised if even 5% of the US population has read a single article in its entirety from any scientific journal in the last year. We're much  more comfortable building our opinions by listening to our favorite comedian's podcast (or AM talk radio for the olds). I'm not arguing the dysfunction of the industry, I just dont think it matters as it relates to public trust.

If you are only including academic science journals (e.g., excluding Scientific American, Nat Geo, Popular Mechanics, etc.) then I doubt 5% of the US population (or 5% of adult US population even) has ever read a single article in a given year. It's a pretty small population who even has/had access to most journals, let alone the ability to go through methodology, analysis, etc. Without trying to do more rigorous analysis I would suspect that the percent of the population that has read a journal article / year has not changed significantly over the last century or so.

Now if you broaden to the popular magazines mentioned earlier, undoubtedly there is less readership than there used to be. This is problematic for a number of reasons, but science reporting has never been particularly good, at least in my lifetime.

  9. This obviously isn't going to close the book on study into COVID-19 origin but just saw that a paper was published in Cell (a very high quality journal) that supports origin of spread from the meat market. Very importantly, the paper does not state the the market actually is the source.

From a Nature release on the paper: "The study establishes the presence of animals and the virus at the market, although it does not confirm whether the animals themselves were infected with the virus."

I haven't read the paper because even if I did I wouldn't have a clue how to interpret / critique methodology or analysis but figured worth sharing.
