RFK Jr. off the chain and off his rocker
He's a conspiracy nut (Baltimore bridge, SSRIs) in the same vein as PRONGHORN (magnetic fields, sunspots). They both also happen to be racist homophobes. Turns out, PRONGHORN stopped posting after he was called out for saying he was attracted to underage girls in IPHB.

Non-political tariffs thread
Thanks. I knew that there were carve-outs, but wasn't sure of the exceptions. Just did a search and, while this article is from May and can't speak to today's rates, it's a good source for where US O&G gets its steel from. https://taxfoundation.org/blog/american-energy-tariffs-oil-gas/

Trump puts Washington police under federal control, National Guard to be deployed
One would be forgiven for assuming that's the Pentagon if one didn't know better. Nope, that's the Department of Labor.

I'm imagining the conversation those guys, walking with garbage bags in that last photo, are having, bitching about leaving their families and jobs 1000 miles away to come to DC and rake leaves, wondering if they'll be home in time for Thanksgiving.

What the fuck is wrong with you, Austin?
I officially left Austin for good a little over a year ago, so I don't keep up with local news as well as I used to, but is this true? Is the crime rate still going up this long after the pandemic?

Mass shooting version 8.27.2025
Reminds me of the time that bigoted motherfuckers like @Enchubben tried to start pinning child molestation and grooming on trans people. So someone decided to fire up the Youth Ministers (and other pervs) Thread of Shame, and started posting news stories of all these conservative authority figures abusing their positions to sex up little kids. In 25 pages and 1200 posts, there's been, like what, one fucking case. You know what, Enchubben, why don't you have the balls just to come out and tell Troph and the whole board that she's a danger to society? Just say it, you cowardly motherfucker. Go ahead, aren't you man enough? Just like the goddam Nazis, you pick out a small minority to point out, demonize, and blame society's ills on to justify turning this country into an authoritarian hellscape. Seriously, go fuck your own face before the leopards that you let loose have a chance to, because they will.

He argues he’s not trying to score points, and yet he and the other Reichwinger ONLY came in here so they could throw around the “tranny" slur. I don’t think either of them had ever posted in this thread before today.

Senate 2026
For those of you, like me, who have trouble remembering names. Ex-Trump Official Warns Why Dictator Talk Isn't A Joke: 'He Would Wax Poetic In Private...' Miles Taylor talked of Donald Trump's jealousy. Former Trump first-term official Miles Taylor on Tuesday urged Americans to take Donald Trump’s dictator talk seriously, noting the president’s admitted envy of authoritarian leaders and his continued targeting of perceived enemies. “Having spent time personally with the man in the first Trump administration, he would wax poetic in private about foreign dictators he admired,” Taylor, who in 2018 penned the famous “anonymous” opinion piece against Trump while serving as Department of Homeland Security chief of staff, told CNN’s John Berman. Trump “was jealous of their ability to exert total control over their populations,” said Taylor, who himself earlier this year became the subject of a Department of Justice investigation after Trump claimed his conduct while working for the government could be “properly characterized as treasonous.” Taylor’s warning followed Trump’s recent claim that “a lot of people [are] saying maybe we’d like a dictator,” before insisting he was not one. Asked by Berman about that Trump remark, Taylor replied: “Look at what Trump said five years ago. He said when you are president of the United States the authority is total, and that’s how it’s got to be. And five years later he’s still saying things that would indicate his interest in being a dictator.” Trump’s threats should not be dismissed, he added, cautioning that “when he said he was going to be Americans’ retribution, people said no, he’s joking about that. When he said he was going to lock people up, they said he was joking. When he said he was going to send in the troops, people said no, he’s joking. He’s doing all of those things. It’s not a joke, John.”

Blastfurnace 2025
I was in upstate NY for a few days last week, and on one of those days, the high was in the lower 70s. Sucked to come back, but it was a nice respite despite this summer not being so bad. Regardless, any break is appreciated.

Blastfurnace 2025
So far, it's looking real good. Beginning Saturday, not a day in the forecast over 90 for a week, although that Saturday "real feel" with high humidity is a bit rare for this neck of the woods. Most of us will be inside all day watching THE game and all the others, so whatever.

Great. They're going to tart it up like a Moscow metro stop with a bunch of cheap, spray-painted bling-bling, like what they've done to the White House.

Trump’s America
Kinda goes along with the trend of Trump voters being really shitty people who like to play down how shitty he really is.

Well, both “presidents” do operate as mob bosses and are alleged to have ties to criminal enterprises. So, yeah, it makes sense that they’d operate similarly.

Updated the Trump Import Taxes tracker: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2025/07/28/business/economy/trump-tariff-tracker.html?unlocked_article_code=1.hU8.7Kxt.WHZ02eWn8eVZ&smid=url-share (Providing a gift link since there are some interactive elements.) Some observations: Looking at Europe, Switzerland must be like, "What the fuck did we do?" (39%) The same goes for India. (50%) The reason for high taxes on Brazilian items, though, should be apparent. (50%) It's wild that the taxes Americans will have to pay on imported Canadian goods are among the very highest. (35%) Tax rates on goods from our biggest trade partners are: Canada: 35% China: 30% Mexico: 25% Europe: 15% QUESTIONS: Has anyone seen an updated estimate of the average tax rate on all imports Americans will have to pay from around the world? Until now, I hadn’t thought about the potential effects on oil imports. Are they somehow exempt? Because we get about half of all our imported oil from Canada. Canada: 35% tax rate Mexico: 25% Saudi Arabia: 10% Venezuela: 15% Brazil: 50% (interesting to compare the difference between the import tax rates from Venezuela and Brazil) https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/how-much-crude-oil-does-us-import-by-country-2025-01-31/

This is at least the second time the US ambassador has been summoned over this regime’s subterfuge. I totally missed this story about US spying on Greenland from back in May: https://archive.is/3RKbH

Tell me about Texas Tech
I don't know about that, but we were good, played loose, and had fun. It felt like we were doing something a little different from the rest of the SWC at the time as a drum corps/scramble band. Sure, if our arms were twisted, we could put on a more traditional "Yeehaw, I'm a patriotic Texan" show to please our own conservative blue-hairs, but we had a lot more fun playing the Spanish inspired stuff (because it's actually good music that we liked) or doing those special flashlight shows where they'd turn off the stadium lights for big games (no idea if they still do that). Very, very few of us were music majors, but at the same time, there were some great musicians. ZIT also always brought it and knew how to party after games. The overall philosophy at the time was to have fun and put on an entertaining show, because we were mostly just recent HS graduates getting our PE credits filled. We all knew the Aggie band was a joke and made fun of them for doing the exact same show at every game, year in and year out, with half its "musicians" not actually playing instruments since we were down on the field and could see it easily. Everybody loved Rice, though, because they're awesome, but we all also had great respect for the musicianship of the Showband of the Southwest (even if they're a little boring). Everyone else in the SWC was totally forgettable. As a trumpet player, this was my all-time favorite song to play. Of course, I'm also a Longhorn who's loved Texas since Earl played, and with this being a Texas board, I'll post this and drop the band talk:

Tell me about Texas Tech
As the legend goes, a TV announcer said before a Tech-Aggie game in 1992 that Lubbock had "nothing but Texas Tech football and a tortilla factory." I was in the Tech band for the '91-'92 seasons and didn't go to any games in fall '93, the semester I graduated, so the timing lines up, I suppose. Anyway, I never witnessed a tortilla being tossed at a game. The fact that the statement would've prompted students to respond makes sense, because when I was on campus, AnM was despised much more than Texas fans probably realize, and to have to suffer such a slight in comparison to College Station at the time would've truly been insulting.
