  1. Post a pic of your setup, I'd like to see what you've got. I started with Bettas some years back and had as many as 4 at one time. What's the temperature of the water in the tank he's in? A heater is pretty much a necessity for any tropical fish. I keep my tanks at a steady 76.5 - 78.5 deg. Bettas are fairly easy to keep but I think they need more space than a gallon and a half. One of the problems with a tank that size is keeping the temperature constant. It's much easier to get a larger volume to a set temp and keep it there, small tanks go thru wild temperature fluctuations and tropical fish just can't tolerate that. I've killed Bettas in the past by not using a heater, having tiny tanks and having the room they were in so cold they basically froze to death though to me the temp was great! Rookie mistakes. Also those tiny tanks don't really have room for a decent heater. Filters are generally a scam if they have "replaceable" cartridges. Filters are where a lot of the good bacteria live and you don't want to be throwing that out! I just cleaned my Eheim 600 yesterday and all I did was drain 4 or so gallons of tank water into a bucket and cleaned the sponges and other media in that water and then put it back together. Hey, if you're ever in Waco I'll GIVE you a complete 10 gallon setup - tank, light, glass lid, heater, pump and double sponge filter. I think you'll find that more water is just easier to take care of. This is my veil tail Betta "Duke", he's in my 55 gallon tank with probably 30 other assorted fish.
  2. I've been hitting the McMurtry hard this summer. "Duane's Depressed" was pretty good and then I found out that there was another book in the series, "When The Light Goes", so I read that too. I liked it, it was a short read but it filled in some gaps that I could relate to. That mostly being the age range covered is where I'm at currently. I do think that I've tired a bit of his writing style though and I think part of that is the books in this series that came much later on after Last Picture Show were all written after McMurtry had spent a lot of years writing screenplays and they seem to me to have a screenplay feel to them. I say that but it didn't stop me from reading more of his work! I went on to read "All My Friends Are Going To Be Strangers" and enjoyed it a good bit, plenty of interesting characters, the locations appealed to me but then at the end it took a very movie-like twist and left me puzzled. It seemed like he needed an ending and just came up with something that would look good on screen. I started "The Last Kind Words Saloon", a tale of Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday, here in the last week but I'm not sure when I'll finish it soon. It's not really holding my interest, the dialogue again seems as though it was written as a movie script. Hard to explain but it doesn't flow like a typical novel, at least to me. Someone suggested Stephen Harrigan upthread so I looked into his stuff last week. While I didn't find the history of Texas book in the library I did find a collection of essays, basically articles that he had once written for magazines, and it's pretty good. He does the reading himself which is nice I think. The stories are not all Texas-centric but most do have some relevance. The first essay is about the Comanche Indians and provides a summary of the last days of the Comanche as a free people with some discussion on Cynthia and Quanah Parker, their relocation to a reservation and how the Comanche now are coping with the modern world.
  3. Where's the pic of her in the blue body paint? That ought to get some voter's attention.
  4. She needed to get some experience before making this run at public office. PTA would have been a good start. I just don't see her sticking to anything long enough for it to pan out though since it's always just been about attention anyway, not about actually DOING something. Also, I wonder if Ricky kept the letters, bet there's some good stuff in those.
  5. Do other countries pack their elderly into communities as densely as we do in the US?
  6. This guy was on my front porch window screen yesterday morning. I'm not sure if his markings are just coincidence or not but there seems to my eye to be some similarities to the screen pattern.
  7. I don't know, if he can get past just finding out what time it is he'll have made progress. No need to let your mind wander off the rails. Maybe a simple ride thru the Spelunker with some hand holding.
  8. Where are Giraffe Boy and Quagmire now? I'd love to hear them share stories about those heady days.
  9. Single spacers are the folks who will fuck you in the ass and not have the courtesy to give a reach around.
  10. Hopefully you've had time now to regroup and work on your game. I say go back and complete the adventure. Last time I went, probably 2000, there was a shit load of girls that looked to be around 13. If anyone objects just tell 'em you got unfinished business and to fuck off.
  11. My sister missed one after her junior year in high school. There was nothing micro about the events that followed.
  12. The digital communications age has certainly changed a lot of things, many for the better. Communications are abbreviated and can convey more information in a compact form. Physical, printed materials though provide a tactile advantage that lends itself to being curated in its original form. All those pics on your iPhone? Probably not going to be passed down to the grandkids. The original copies of important documents can be preserved for future generations whereas that big tweet from that one guy probably will be forgotten quickly and misquoted when it is remembered. I'm good with the new way, it has its place and time.
  13. Another conversation, this one on paper. My only experience with paper is from consumer b&w stuff from the 70's and this is all about what's out there for inkjets now. On a sidenote, my employer bought me a new HP color laser printer for the house and I've ordered a few sheets of glossy laser photo paper just for giggles. I'm interested to see what sort of results I'll get.
  14. I don't know that I've ever used my dishwasher. Living solo it just doesn't make much sense to run an appliance for the length of time it takes to do its job when a sink of hot water and ten minutes accomplishes the same thing.
  15. Thought it was going to be about 3 guys renting a $30 whore that turned out to only cost $25.
  16. An hour and a half 'til daylight, I'm interested to see what's left.
  17. Is this why the old man resigned from Liberty U yesterday?
  18. It's a fantastic little coaster. Indoors and cool, the "dip" where you go to the bottom of the mountain was awesome.
  19. Bend over, Beaumont, here it comes again. I've got a bad feeling about this one and hope like hell I'm just being stupider than usual.
