  1. He's a substantially better offensive player than Mitchell and that was with a very flawed roster after Tomlin was suspended at K-State. We would have been pretty damn good with Kaluma IMO.
  2. I think Mitchell is a pretty good case study with the portal, continuity, culture, etc. While Mitchell did improve this year we would have been a much better team if we added Kaluma instead of him. IMO that was the biggest mistake Texas made in the offseason. I'm just not a firm believer in the "culture" and "continuity" arguments in today's college environment. If you think there's an upgrade out there in the portal you should go get them.
  3. I don't think Gerry was all that wrong about Mitchell or Hunter last year anyway. All he said is both were likely going pro because that's what they were telling everyone. Things changed because NBA teams laughed at the idea of them going pro.
  4. Mitchell can't guard the 5. He gets bullied in the paint by anyone with size. But I do think he's a pretty good defender at the 3 or 4.
  5. But I think this is the type school that can afford them and give them the role they want. The issue for a school like Texas is they don't want to spend money on a guy that can't dribble or shoot. @closetojumpingseems to indicate above that Texas has zero NIL allocated to Hunter or Mitchell which doesn't surprise me.
  6. I will be shocked if any top team wants Mitchell or Hunter as anything more than a role player. You aren't winning anything significant if those guys are one of your top 3 or 4 players. My bet is Mitchell will pick a fringe tournament team where they let him attempt to be the guy.
  7. Playing for a different staff isn't going to help a guy like Mitchell learn how to dribble and shoot from beyond 2 feet. Some of this is just raw talent. A guy like Shaq can spend all the time in the world working on free throws but that isn't going to magically give him the ability to shoot. Hunter and Mitchell are role players on elite 8/final 4 caliber teams as we saw last year.
  8. The Utah boards are also saying there were all types of logistical nightmares even getting to the arena. It sounds like they had to deal with a lot of shit.
  9. This wouldn't be surprising. Same thing with Hunter. Both these guys seem like they want to be the guy but they just don't have the offensive skillset to be that.
  10. This is his scouting report on 247. "He’s most effective when he’s able to operate in space, whether that be in the open floor or attacking a close-out. He’s a dangerous shooter off the dribble and while he can make tough threes, his favorite spots are in the mid-range area. He can pull-up over top of contesting defenders, step-back to create some space, and even bring smaller defenders into the mid-post and operate with his back to the basket."
  11. Yeah but we already have several of those type players in Scott, Johnson, and Weaver. We need a more prototypical PG or somebody that can create off the dribble.
  12. The advanced stats look much different. For example, Hunter finished 9th on the team in BPM in '23 and 7th in BPM in '24. He's been an average player surrounded by a legit team in '23 and a good team in '24. Hunter is simply not a guy you can count on to be one of your best players.
  13. I think a playmaking guard off the dribble can be found in the portal. We don't need a crazy scorer or shooter. Just somebody that can get downhill with quickness and create for others.
  14. Johnson is 6'6 and Scott is 6'5. Both these guys have similar size and more length than guys we played minutes at the 3 last year in Weaver and Cunningham. I think we can definitely sell 2 more guards because a couple of Johnson, Scott, and Weaver are going to play significant minutes at the 3/wing.
  15. I think we need two guards. I would not be confident at all if we are reliant on two FR next year in the backcourt. Also, you can probably play Johnson or Scott at the 3 and Weaver played there with the small lineup including Abmas/Hunter. What we really need is a playmaking guard off the dribble. I'm not sure that's really Johnson, Weaver, or Scott.
  16. I wouldn't be surprised if we go really big until Gonzaga shows they are willing to drive the ball. More length makes it difficult to shoot over. At times, Gonzaga is completely reliant on the 3. If they aren't going to take our bigs off the dribble then more length might be the play.
  17. Outside of running Gonzaga off the 3 point line, the key is if they do hit some 3s do not think you have to respond by shooting 3s on the other end. Gonzaga is small compared to us and like Alabama we need to make this a war inside the paint on the offensive end. K. Trong (5'8) vs Booker (6'1) K. Trong (5'9) vs Gonzales (5'10) Maxwell (6'0) vs Holle (6'0). There will also be a huge size advantage here when Muhammad plays at 6'4. Ejim (6'1) vs Moore (6'1) Hollingsworth (6'3) vs Jones (6'4). This is a bit deceptive too because Hollingsworth is more of a stretch big than one that likes to bang inside. I think Gonzaga will have issues guarding Booker because their guards are giving up 3+ inches on her.
  18. You have to dare them to drive and run them off the 3 point line. They did beat Stanford but Stanford's best player was sick and only played 10 minutes.
  19. Gonzaga is #3 in 3 point percentage offense and Utah is #278 in 3 point percentage defense. So this is going about expected. Utah may not even be top 300 in 3 point percentage defense after this game.
  20. Both these teams are pretty much mirror images of each other. Average in most areas but they can both shoot from 3 which overcomes those issues. We are also completely different than both these teams. We are much more defensive-minded and our offense is all about scoring inside the paint compared to 3s.
  21. Lol what are these broadcasters saying: "It's been a war in the paint." 99% of this game has been played on the perimeter.
  22. Both these teams can shoot. They're also both bad perimeter defending teams which is leading to wide open 3s in this game.
  23. Both these teams are good offensively. Our advantage is defensively and on the boards. We are substantially better in both those areas.
