Who do you suppose got in the middle of that? JD Souther? You know someone did…

The first thought when seeing this picture was, "Man, I'd love to be the meat in that sandwich."

I don't know if it's because I'm old, but at 5:45 am, I don't want any music.  I'd want to enjoy the solitude of being surrounded by the darkness and quiet for the beginning of the trip.  Perhaps after my first stop to fill up and get something to eat, after the sun is up, then this is the first song on my playlist.  It's the perfect road trip song.

I did about 32k miles on a Bandit 1200, they’re the best UJM of all time.

It really is the most versatile bike.  You can cruise on it, you can tour on it, you can carve apexes on it.  Any kind of riding you want to do on paved road is possible and enjoyable, and with a minimal amount of money and a bit of mechanical skill, there is so much more performance-wise you can squeeze out of it.  I bought it new 22 years ago, and I still love it.  I love my Harley also, but if I was only allowed to have one bike, I'd sell the Harley.

  4. After sitting idle since last November, I finally got these guys out of hibernation yesterday for a bit of exercise.  These pictures are a few years old, but the bikes are the same.  I was surprised at how easily they started up and how smoothly they ran after sitting for so long, especially the Suzuki, with its carburetors and all.  I am seldom ever as happy and content as when riding.  I need to do more of it.

I wonder, just to take it up a notch, if they can incorporate guns into the bonfire tradition?

Depends what type of "gun" you're talking about.  If they did it the Steel Shank way, they'd incorporate pipe laying into their traditions, amiright?

  6. No need to wait for 2028 in Australia.  This is from the NASA website:

AUG. 12, 2026:  A total solar eclipse will be visible in Greenland, Iceland, Spain, Russia, and a small area of Portugal, while a partial eclipse will be visible in Europe, Africa, North America, the Atlantic Ocean, Arctic Ocean, and Pacific Ocean

Seems like Iceland, Spain or Portugal would be nice places to visit during August.

If you haven't listened to his album "In The Wee Small Hours", correct that posthaste.  It's his "divorce" album about Gardner.  I recommend a good stereo, a quiet room, and a glass of nice single malt Scotch whisky, late on a Saturday night.

Jack Daniels was Sinatra's tipple of choice.

  8. Not really my place to speculate on what Vince should or should not be doing with his life, but I am just glad there wasn't some numb nut packing heat in there who decided it would be a good time to show everyone who the real man was.

Based on responses, I assume we're talking about rock drummers.  For me, the gold standard is Bonham.  The thing that made him great wasn't his power, it was his groove.  It rarely gets mentioned.  His playing had a massive pocket.

I don't think anyone wanted to call Ginger Baker a rock drummer to his face.  He stated publicly many times that he hated rock.  I once attended a seminar where someone asked him about this, and he said that if he had known in 1966 that he, and Cream, would be thought of as the spark that begat heavy metal, he would go back in time and abort the whole thing.  He considered himself a jazz drummer stuck in a rock world.  Although perhaps not as adamant about it, Mitch Mitchell also felt the same way about rock, and considered himself a jazz drummer first.

So...I guess you felt lucky...and made your day...but don't forget that every man's got to know his limitations.  I'll see myself out.

Big Deodorant has decided it's time to dust-off the 20 year full body spray deodorizer campaign.

If you're not spraying aluminized air freshener on everything from the insides of the elbows to the undersides of sexual organs then you're probably going to die.

Seriously...I thought people figured out that if you bathe a bit more frequently, you won't have these odor problems...and maybe change your underwear before going out and about.

  12. Perhaps, within a year or so your daughter will see this as her theme song:

Nice write-up you provided.  I enjoyed reading it.  Although my Texas roots are wafer thin compared to yours, and I haven't lived in Texas since graduating from UT in 1983, I still feel more Texan than Virginian, and I've been here since leaving Texas.  As others have stated above, once Texas becomes part of your life, it's always part of your life.

  13. My time in Austin was from autumn of 1979 through summer 1983.  Vulcan Gas Company was long gone by then, but was still one of those places you heard about from "the good ol' days".  The Armadillo was still open when I arrived, but closed while I was still there, and I am still kicking myself for never going to see a show there.  I did have tickets once to see Johnny Winter in spring of 1980, but the show was cancelled due to some "injury" to Johnny, which I took to mean he had OD'd or something.  I did see him later that summer in Houston, so all was well, but back to the Armadillo.  Although I never went there myself, I do miss it, as it was one of those places that perfectly embodied Austin at its peak.  There was no other venue in any other city that could host the likes of Willie and Waylon, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, Johnny Winter and Frank Zappa, and have pretty much the same crowd every night...and everyone got along, just there having a good time to good vibes.  Austin used to be like that.  Differences in opinion didn't make one an enemy who must be avoided and/or silenced.  Dammit, I'm old, and I miss my youth.

For QB draft busts, surely Russell, Leaf, and Akili Smith have to lead the list. Johnny Blow is on the list, but not the biggest bust.

For non-QB, Tony Mandarich has to top the list, but Boz, Lawrence Phillips, and Steve Entman are keeping him company.

I am surprised (and disappointed) every time the thread gets bumped that it’s not a Deadpool notification.

Don't forget Todd Marinovich...Robo QB indeed.

Another difference- Sark is now in the top 10 of coaches’ salaries. Although the annual rate is larger for Sark than Jimbo, didn’t his contract put him in the top three?

The main difference that aggy does not seem to understand is that Sark has already won a championship, something aggy hasn't done since 1998.
