  1. I'm glad, of course, it ended up being a non-event for Hawaii. It was my first time in six plus years living here facing a serious potential damaging event. It was good practice figuring out what to load into the car and where to go. A dress rehearsal of sorts for something more serious. I realized I didn't have a real plan in place for something like this which is dumb when living on an isolated island.
  2. Just got the 30 minute siren warning. I was parked alone up on this section of highway when I got here at 4:30. Now there's probably 50 cars parked up here.
  3. Where are you headed?
  4. A family in front of me. I'm a humble Honda man.
  5. Parked a couple hundred feet up high near the H3 on ramp with a nice view of Kaneohe Bay and a full SUV of supplies. Traffic is minimal and very orderly on this side of the island with police directing things. Tsunami sirens going off every so often.
  6. Fair point. I have two older neighbors I'm going to check in on to join me.
  7. I've got the SUV loaded with water and food and other essentials ready to go to higher ground if need be.
  8. I live 600 feet from Kailua beach on Oahu. Pucker level is 8/10.
  9. https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6500596/2025/07/21/college-football-program-valuations-rankings-2025/ 1. Texas: $2.38 billion (projected price) Three-year average football revenue: $183 million The Longhorns routinely lead the country in revenue and were the only team to top $200 million in the most recent financial reports. No program came within $25 million of Texas in either of the past two years. The Longhorns haven’t won a national title since 2005 but made the College Football Playoff semifinals each of the past two seasons and are among this preseason’s top championship contenders. Add in the SEC brand, and Texas looks like the safest investment. Our price tag makes the Longhorns comparable to the 2018 sale of the Carolina Panthers (almost $2.3 billion). 15. Texas A&M: $973 million Average football revenue: $97.3 million The Aggies have the rabid fan base and demographic upside to be higher. Money has also never been an issue at a program that paid Jimbo Fisher the biggest buyout in college football history (about $77 million). But we’re also considering wins and losses because of the money victories bring. Texas A&M is arguably the nation’s biggest underachiever with only four top-five finishes and one national title (1939) since the Associated Press poll began in 1936 and zero conference titles since 1998.
  10. I may not be following your question, but if I am, one option is to purchase a 4x4 piece of plexiglass of a solid thickness, say 1/4 to 1/2 inch and do a simple wood frame with 1x2 wood strips that are nailed to the side jamb. You can cut the plexiglass to size with a fine tooth blade on a handsaw or maybe pay extra and order a custom cut piece from a local plastics business. This may be a lot more effort than you're thinking for a simple garage window filler. I had the same issue when I built a tiny house with sliding windows instead of single or double hung windows. I ended up purchasing a specialty vertical oriented window unit that came with a filler for the space above. Pain in the ass and lesson learned.
  11. Past Lives, a Korean and American film. It's slow and melancholic but also sweet. A nice break from the usual fast paced fare.
  12. Free. DM sent.
  13. I have two vacant tiny houses on a hilltop outside Comfort on Skyline Drive that can be used for short term temporary housing. I don't know who to connect with.
  14. House Policy Bill Would Add $3.4 Trillion to Debt, Swamping Economic Gains https://www.nytimes.com/2025/06/17/us/politics/house-bill-federal-debt.html?unlocked_article_code=1.P08.YQAs.oktITAZsnXhS&smid=url-share Top notch fiscal conservatism!
  15. Ditto. Seoul was cool. Maybe worth a few days including a trip to the DMZ. I went to Busan for a couple days but found it meh. Not a bad country to visit briefly, but not especially memorable either.

Wade. Southern Baptists voted overwhelmingly on Tuesday to call for the overturning of the Supreme Court ruling that legalized same-sex marriage, with strategists citing the successful effort that overturned the right to legal abortions as a possible blueprint for the new fight. The denomination has long opposed gay marriage, but Tuesday was the first time its members have voted to work to legally end it. Expanding on conservatives’ success in overturning Roe v. Wade in 2022, the vote signals growing evangelical ambitions to overturn Obergefell v. Hodges, the Supreme Court ruling that was handed down 10 years ago this month.
  17. People who drive fast in parking lots, particularly where families with children are present. I'm getting out of my car at the Y and some POS is zooming through the lot like he's in an F1 race.
  18. Add/Substitute Duncan and the same point holds.
  19. Kailua and Lanikai Beach today.
  20. If you haven't already, you should freeze you and your wife's three credit agency accounts. I don't know if it's foolproof, but my understanding is that it makes it very difficult for scammers to open accounts using your info.
  21. That's awesome. I did a three day layover when returning from Europe a few years back and loved it. Because of the short time I had I just did the Golden Circle drive which was gorgeous, then spent the rest of the time in ReykjavĂk and nearby. It is expensive, but there are plenty of ways to eat reasonably. I stopped at Ikea for example and gassed up and ate at their cafe. Moderately priced ingredients and meals can be had at grocery stores as well. The roads are in really good condition and people are friendly drivers I found. The small population overall is very friendly and accustomed to tourists. I look forward to hearing about your more in depth visit of the country.
  22. I saw a post on a Surly thread the other day I can't find now about how baseball games at Dallas Baptist University pause and everyone stands at attention at a certain time in the evening when Taps is played at the adjacent U.S. Cemetery to honor veterans buried there. It was a bit dusty when I watched it. Then I became sad and despairing thinking how we are throwing away all that sacrifice for this orange piece of shit and his corrupt minions at all levels of government and his corporate counterparts. Our country has gotten through plenty of dark times and I try to remain optimistic we can get through this period, but it's more and more difficult.
  23. I don't imbibe so it'll be lots of great coffee for me. I have a high end coffee tour planned.
  24. Just checked and there's one a block from my hotel. Will definitely check it out.
  25. I'm traveling in Japan. There's a free, clean, restroom with bidet toilets every few blocks it seems. I've been drinking fluids with reckless abandon.
