  1. Not even Hand? I think he has to go at a minimum. But then again I thought Mehringer had to go about 2 seasons before he was actually fired too, so what do I know.
  2. I'm with you. I hope, and think Herman is still gone. But even if someone like Urban comes in he may have a hard time getting the band back together. I guess maybe he'd try to have his son in law take Offensive Coordinator spot in place of Yurcich? But I think the rest of that first group I listed may be retained and everyone else would likely be gone. If Campbell gets the job, and his DC is willing to join him, then I'm guessing Ash is gone and most of the rest of the defensive coaches would be as well. Haven't looked into their other coaches at all, but I know I'd take their DC in a heartbeat even though Ash has shown promise here. No idea how those guys are as recruiters as Ames is a tough sell. But they can evaluate, motivate, and coach it would seem. Give me that plus if we can win, Texas recruits itself to a certain extent. If we can win and put players in the league, then recruiting is on autopilot.
  3. So assuming for the sake of argument that Herman stays, what do you think our staff will look like next season? DC - Ash; SpTms/TE - Boulware; WR - Coleman; RB - Drayton; DL1 - Giles; DL2 - Hagen; OL - Hand; LB - Hutzler; DB - Valai; OC - Yurcich The bad: Hand clearly has to go. The Good: Ash, Yurcich, Hutzler and Valai seem good and it appears that we made good hires there last year. Drayton I think proved himself this year with the production on the field and finally landing the big fish after a few years of not being able to. I think getting Bijan truly saved his job last offseason. And while he isn't the best recruiter, particularly when the RB coach is usually able to help out other position groups, I think I'm ok with him as well. Undecided: I don't know enough about Boulware at this point to be firmly in either the keep or cut camp. Special teams weren't great, but weren't terrible. Brewer drives me mad and I don't understand why he plays as much as he does. But not sure if that is his call or Herman. Wiley has shown really good potential. I would have hoped Boulware could have had more impact in recruiting, helping other position groups etc.....but the program being in the trash overall really kind of hinders all of these guy's abilities to recruit honestly so not sure how much I can hold that against him at this point. I think I'd lean towards keeping him. I don't understand having 2 DL coaches honestly unless one of them is a stud recruiter, which I don't think applies to either of these 2. I'm not in love with either Giles or Hagen. But I don't have an absolute disgust for either at this point either. Think I'd prefer to churn one and keep one and try to find a rainmaker. If either got another job elsewhere on their own this offseason, I wouldn't be upset. And that says a lot I suppose. I'm a little more iffy on Coleman. Seems like we could get a rainmaker there. I was looking for much improvement this year at getting off the line and route running compared to when Mehringer was in charge. It has gotten better. But I'm not sure the improvement is enough to offset his apparent shortcomings in recruiting. Wish we could get the guy from TCU somehow. I think I read that he was on a year to year deal, so I could see him not being retained either I suppose. If I had to bet, and assuming Herman is back, I think Hand is the only one let go of the assistants this year. And I guess I'd reluctantly be ok with that although I do think there are certain areas where upgrades could be made. But if we do retain Herman, it's going to be hard to get great assistant coaches to join us given the uncertainty surrounding the team. So probably best to sit tight for the most part I guess. Thoughts?
  4. There was talent, particularly the defensive backs. But they were absolutely god awful the year prior. Orlando absolutely turned that defense around pronto. 2016 team gave up 31.5 points per game and Orlando shaved 10 points off of that the following year. Yards allowed dropped from 449 to 367. The talent was there, but Orlando did coach them up and significantly improve them when he first got here. 1st 6 games of 2017 (excluding san jose state) ppg given up was 27. Second half of year ppg allowed cut down to 19. So Orlando's first team saw significant improvement throughout the year, even more than what we saw this year. And they held an OU Senior QB Baker Mayfield led team to only 29 points. I mean there is no way he can fall as far and fast as Orlando did because he was truly doing some idiotic stuff his last few years here. I hope Ash is for real. I'm just a little skeptical after one year worth of results that are overall lukewarm. We literally had nowhere to go but up, and despite giving up more points per game this year than last year, I would agree that the defense is actually in a lot better shape right now and trending the right way. But I'm not ready to say he is a savior yet either.
  5. Yes, you're right. Looked back at the schedule wrong and misremembered the order in which the games occurred. To be fair, I was drunk as a skunk in order to numb the pain while watching all games this year so partly blame my memory lapse on that..... So KSU and Colorado were in fact the only 2 that would fit this narrative. Both higher scoring games for sure, but I think my other points still raise doubts in my mind when discussing even just those 2 particular games about any significant betterment due solely to play-calling/scheme/packages derived from lack of Herman meddling. I don't know. I'm just sick of losing and think we need a change at the top.
  6. Sorry. I guess when you quoted me and the theme of my entire post was that Herman needed to go, I assumed that you thought he should stay unless we had Urban locked up. Yes, I agree with the premise that having a full "normal" offseason should obviously benefit the team if they have some coaching stability on the coordinator front. As for the packages and formations, I'll have to take your word for it. I honestly didn't notice anything significantly different than we've been doing, other than more max protect type stuff and screens in the 2nd half of the Colorado game which was apparently by design in order to limit risk with the backup qb in. But if you say we did, then I'll believe you. But 17 points in the 1st half with Yurcich's "normal" scheme and play-calling against that Colorado team last night is nice, but won't exactly cut it against top Big 12 teams next year I don't think. I do like both coordinators we have now, and think they should improve next year as well hopefully. I'd imagine that the full playbook on both sides were not entirely in. But if I had to choose between keeping Herman and both of them, or having a new staff entirely, then give me the latter. Apologize for misinterpreting your post. And clearly Hand has to go. I don't think anyone will disagree there.
  7. I’m not as convinced as you are that our offense is all better now because A) Herman will stick his nose back into play-calling at the first sign of stalling next year because that’s what he does and he’s proven he’s too stubborn to change because he's the smartest man in the room. So if you agree that him sticking his nose into the offense is an issue, then you have to fire him or you have the same problem next season and B) I’m not completely sold that Yurcich’s play-calling down the stretch was truly all that great. When is it that you think Herman supposedly said screw it and started letting Yurcich call plays without providing any input? I think if that indeed occurred, conventional wisdom is that it would have happened after the Oklahoma State game when our fate was sealed at not getting into the championship game. So with Yurcich calling plays we put up 17 points against West Virginia. And then we were 5-21 on 3rd & 4th downs vs K-state and Colorado. However, we were + 6 in turnover margin over those last 2 games, and we averaged 13.5 yards per run for our 2 main running backs against K-state, and 10.8 yards per run against Colorado. So is Yurcich so much better at calling run plays than the recommendations he was getting from Tom Herman? Is Cosmi a terrible run blocker and he should have been benched all year? Can we expect 10+ yards per carry next year with Yurcich getting zero input from Herman? Or were those teams just crappy and beaten up? I think it’s a greater likelihood of the latter. Bijan getting more carries certainly helped, but we're not averaging anything near that next year against the better teams in the league. And having Herman around likely ensures Bijan gets fewer carries than he would otherwise. So to think that the offense is just going to click along next year based on the last 2 games of this season (while ignoring West Virginia) is a bit of wishful thinking IMHO. As for the defense, here is the trend of points allowed per game for Texas since 2017 (First year of Herman) Orlando: 21.2, 25.9, 27.5 Ash: 28.5 You can crap on Orlando all you want, but he was decent the first few years here, especially given the personnel he inherited. And then people figured out his weaknesses and he was unable/unwilling to change. Kind of like Tom. Can Ash’s defense hold an OU team that has their 1st string RB, a more experienced offensive line, and a qb with actual game experience underneath his belt to less than 40 points next year? Can we score 40+ points against them next year? Because unless we beat OU next year, Herman is gone and all we've accomplished by retaining him another year is to save some money (not mine so who cares), and secure one more year of subpar recruiting results that will just set us back further.
  8. This. Plus the fact that our talent level is only going to go down from here with Herman in charge. If he can't win the conference with the roster he had this year and OU being way down compared to normal, we won't ever have a shot under him. As for the IT sunshine, I recall similar sentiments after last year's beat down of Utah in the bowl game as well. Gee, look at all these youngsters that had to step up and the coaches put them in a better scheme. Show me a loss next year! Well. Here we are.....again. And unless CDC has the fortitude to do what needs to be done, we'll be in a similar situation this time next year.....again. Plus we'll have missed out on the potential of getting the cream from the 2022 class as well and potentially missing out on difference makers from the one-time transfer portal freebie. Love how the team finished. But I still think Tom has to go.
  9. Watching the 3A State title game replay with Hallettsville and Jonathan Brooks looks insanely good. I know the level of competition is probably underwhelming, but they could not stop him in the first half. Kid has unbelievable balance. Made a couple nice plays as a LB too. There's definitely something there.
  10. Watched a little coverage on LHN and Herman said (paraphrasing) that he is happy with the class given that the pandemic limiting visits and having a bunch of new coaches who didn't have time to bond with the recruits really hurt. Well if you would have gotten rid of your horrible coaches a year earlier like most people wanted (or better yet never brought some of them with him in the first place), maybe we wouldn't have had that issue. And he kept Hand.... so what's the excuse for missing on all of these Offensive Linemen (legacy studs, highly rated longhorn leans, and multiple plan B and C guys that we couldn't close on) this cycle? I've never heard someone use so many excuses in all my life. If he could admit to failing on anything, even the smallest thing, then that'd be a start and give me the slightest glimmer of hope. But he is just too stubborn. And ultimately that will be his downfall. Also found it interesting that on multiple occasions Lowell Galindo talked about next year how the team would have a new look with Card as the QB. Like he had already written off Thompson. Maybe he's right. But just found that odd.
  11. Hell, with Charlie, signing day was usually pretty darn fun. It was the other 364 days a year that had me questioning my sanity. But at least we had that 1 day a year. This year, it feels like our older brother just told us that Santa is a fraud and we don't even have that joy anymore.
  12. Most of their class is signing in the next couple of days so personally I don't see any reason why Urban would have to wait until after their playoff game. Its should be pretty easy for the OSU assistant coaches not to get distracted. Just don't talk to reporters. Those guys are going to be in the office for 20 hours a day leading up to their game more than likely. If his son in law is going to come and this is all a done deal, just hush hush.....I'm pretty sure that conversation between Urban and him has already taken place anyway. So again waiting doesn't do any good to keep him from getting distracted. Just as long as those guys aren't officially hired or asked to call our recruits or anything like that, it don't make a shit. And getting a head start on the transfer portal seems like it'd be a pretty important thing for Urban and Texas.
  13. No. Didn't you watch the Episode of the Brady's where they went to Hawaii. Imagine how many players would miss games due to getting hit on the head with surfboards and being attacked by poisonous spiders.
  14. Facilities, Winning, and getting kids drafted. Not necessarily in that order. Bagmen can certainly help too.
  15. Any chance this is CDC trying to force some of the bmd's to pony up the cash? Like, look guys, I can't get rid of Herman right now unless we have the money to buy him out. So if you want Herman gone, you know who to make the check out to. Otherwise I'm prepared to roll with what we got.
  16. Snyder was hired from a Big 10 school where he had been Offensive Coordinator and QB coach for the previous 9 seasons, during which Iowa finished in the top 20 of the AP poll 6 times. And K-State was coming off of their 2 most recent coaches having a combined record of 27-93-3. Briles had been coach at Houston for 5 years before Baylor hired him. Malzahn had been Offensive Coordinator for Auburn for 3 years and was just one year removed from that role when they brought him back as head coach, so he was a pretty well known quantity in their eyes. Freeze, no idea how to view him. Guess he is a good coach seeing as he has Liberty rolling. But you have to discount what he did at Ole Miss due to all the cheating etc... Plus Ole MIss was coming off 2 seasons of 0-18. Both Ole Miss and K-state were in position to take a risk on more of an unknown at that point for their program than Texas is today. I'm really trying not to reply because it's clear that we are just going to have to agree to disagree, and I'm fine with that. I really do like Traylor and think he is a good coach. But these examples are just not the same.
  17. Let's have Carrington be head coach and give him Herman's double secret decision binder and simply have him do the opposite of everything that it says to do.
  18. So how many coaches do you think can lead UT to the promised land in the next 5 or so years if they were hired by year end? Urban. Saban, Dabo, Riley, Day, Mullen. Kelly? Anyone else? Sure, a certain number of coaches won't leave their current jobs for UT, but that list has to be pretty short I'd imagine. If there are truly less than 10-15 coaches in the country that can win us a national championship given all of the resources (if utilized correctly) we have available at Texas, then we're doomed. It sucks Urban hasn't accepted our overtures yet, but I can't fathom Tom is the best option for us next year if we can't land Meyer. I agree that hiring someone else, Campbell, Fickell, insert name here, is no guarantee. But it gives us a chance. And a fresh face and hopefully some sort of shot in the arm for recruiting. I literally have zero hope of Herman getting us to where we need to be at this point. And in the meantime, he is actively damaging the program every single day that he stays the head coach because of his lame duck status and inability to recruit right now. If he couldn't win with the roster this year, good luck in a few years after we have a few more offensive classes like we're about to sign this year. This is a huge offseason, especially with the transfer portal freebie coming up and the loaded 2022 recruiting class. And I can't see any reason why Herman should be the one to lead us through it.
  19. Glad it's at least entertaining for you. I feel like I've just been banging my head against a brick wall all day long.
  20. I'd imagine Ash could get a job making his current salary for another school next year, yes. And maybe Yurcich could take a promotion to be Head Coach at UTSA backfilling Traylor after he comes here since that is such a great, high demand, career launching pad of a job to have. I mean hell, 1 year there of going 7-4 gets you a top 5 in the country Head Coaching Job. Man, how fortunate could Yurcich be? Yes, generally speaking when you have to report to someone that is brought from outside your company (team) whom you think is inferior and has less experience and you believe hasn't worked as long/hard as you have, that usually tends to cause a little bit of friction. But hey, you guys are smart and I'm dumb. You're right, and I'm wrong. You're good looking, and I'm hideous. Your farts smell like roses, and my farts smell like Tom Herman's do after a drunken night out on the town. I'm quite sure if Traylor gets this job, he can get whichever coordinators he desires because he knows everyone in the industry because they all came through a small 3A town 6+ years ago and listened to stories about how he named his plays after tv shows. Besides, he has such a wealth of head coaching experience, think of all the knowledge one could acquire just being around him. Once Traylor's staff is in place, or wait....I forgot. He doesn't even have to bring in any people because hey, let's keep our entire staff except for Herman. Yeah. That'd be great. Surely everyone will work together in perfect harmony and we'll be celebrating the national championship in 2-3 short years. Yeah, no execution risk there at all.
  21. Schulz, you brings up a good point that he probably has contacts from when he was having players recruited at Gilmer. I hadn't factored that in. But having contacts that were there trying to woo your kids and suck up to you in the process is different than having history of actually working with the guys too. I couldn't agree more with Matt Rhule, I think he is a phenomenal hire for UTSA. You should have bolded a few other words though: bright new era for UTSA FOOTBALL ..... and bring a championship to San Antonio. Big difference between getting a quote on the subject of how he'll do at UTSA vs. getting a quote on how he'd do coaching at UT. Also, what is Rhule supposed to say when the PR team from UTSA reaches out to him for a quote to use in their introductory press release announcing the hire? Just because I don't think Traylor is ready to be a head coach at Texas (something several people agreed with on other boards today as being a top 5 job in the country) doesn't mean I don't think he is an excellent coach. I'm done debating. Clearly most people here has seen all they need to from him and think he is the best candidate for the job. Can't change your minds, so I guess we'll see what happens.
  22. Traylor has never stayed anywhere long enough to even be in danger of being fired. His longest college tenure is 2 seasons. Doesn't give me a lot of faith that he's learned roster management skills that are pretty crucial in today's game. Ash was a terrible head coach. If he was given that job here, I'd be extremely disappointed. But that still doesn't mean he's going to be happy working for someone with Traylor's background. Yurcich makes almost $1MM more than Traylor. OC at UT > Head Coach at UTSA. OC at Ohio State and Oklahoma State > RB/TE/Special Teams coordinator at Ark/SMU/UT. Again, can't see him being happy working for someone with Traylor's background. Now maybe these guys could all check their egos and make it work. I just find that hard to believe.
  23. Texas is not = Arkansas. Maybe in a few more years we will be. But no, I wouldn't advocate hiring a lifetime OL coach without any HC experience. And I said we should go after him now with tongue in cheek, because we shouldn't. But if you compare resumes of Traylor and that guy, I know who I'd vote for after 1 year of head coaching ability. Everyone talks about how we hate comfort hires. But to me, if you really look at Traylor's resume objectively, there is no way in hell he is ready for this job yet. The only reason people are advocating for him is because he is familiar, and they think we can get him cheap along with 2 stud coordinators. As mentioned, I don't think that is viable. There are a lot of people that would rank above him on the list that we should consider. Nobody is a slam dunk. I get that. But it's just too risky of a move right now in my opinion.
  24. Arkansas had Traylor in place on staff when they Fired Morris. Yet they picked another coach to be interim coach to finish out the year, and then they hired the offensive line coach from Georgia after considering several other coaches (none of which was Traylor according to what I could find). So they clearly didn't think he was ready to coach Arkansas just one year ago. I don't think one year of heading up UTSA has added all that much to his resume. Sidenote: The new Arkansas coach has them at 3-6 against SEC opponents after being 0-16 the prior two years. 3 of their 6 losses in SEC have come from a combined 7 points. Hell, I'd argue that is a more impressive turnaround than what has happened at UTSA. Maybe we need to go after him.
