Movies that stuck to or significantly deviated from the book
Uhhhh... did you read Clear and Present Danger or Patriot Game or The Sum of All Fears? Those movies had same concepts as the books, and that's about it. Clear and Present Danger was a kickass book. Casting Willem Dafoe as John Clark was a joke.

Movies that stuck to or significantly deviated from the book
It’s been a long time, but agree that Godfather the movie matched the book 100% until it didn’t. I don’t remember the exact scene, but I consciously thought it deviated from the book. The fantastic movie eventually went back to the fantastic book. God reminder!

Formula 1 2026
So I was staying at the Holiday Inn express and watched a Youtube video talking about ground effects, so I'm an expert now. Explain to me in crayon why the new regs are trying to reduce ground effects.

Why would you post that gif when this one was out there.

who is the greatest robot/droid/character of mechanical persuasion
Damn. Lots of great robots, androids and humanoids. If I had to pick my top 3 K2SO Bender TARS / CASE / KIPP Only reason Twiki should be on any list is because he gets to smell Erin Gray's farts.

I Robot took the name of the book and threw away everything else. The original Running Man took the general premise, but the "games" completely missed the mark. The Hunt for Red October followed the book pretty well. I thought the movie was better than the book. The Shawshank Redemption followed the book until towards the end. I don't think Red ever made it out of Shawshank. I only got through 1.5 books of Foundation, but I don't recall there any reference to Brother Dawn, Day, Dusk. Those books were a beating.

In case Sainz ever loses his seat, at least he's got a side gig being a hair model.

Trivial things that please the ever living shit out of you
We got a robot vacuum/mop during Black Friday week. It's a MASSIVE upgrade in terms of me not having to vacuum and using a vacuum wet mop. This thing also has cameras and sensors, so it's actually navigating between chair legs instead of randomly bumping around and getting stuck under the dining table. I have it programmed to clean the entire downstairs 2x a week, and mopping the kitchen another 2 days during the week.

We had our office party last Friday. The office manager asked me how much booze to get for 65 adults. I figured 2.5 drinks per person, so 12 bottles of wine and maybe 6 cases of beer/seltzers. She ended up getting 18 bottles of wine, 10 cases of beer and a few bottles of whisky. There were only about 25 people... So unfortunately I'll have to take a case or 2 home with me. Merry Christmas.

Random thoughts that don't warrant a thread
My sister took my dad to Lawry's for his 85th birthday. I asked him how he liked it, and he said the prime rib wasn't good, and would have preferred a nice prime rib steak instead. Can't say I disagree with him. Ribeye steak > prime rib.

Shit My Kid Says
Yes, that's for fixing it. It's been 30+ years since my last physics class. Been teaching my kid about inertia, friction and rotational velocity. Probably getting it all wrong, but at least I'm keeping him away from a screen 1 stupid lesson at a time.

Gold bug / silver bug / numismatic / metals thread
I don't carry it with me, but it's taking a lot of space in my deposit box and in between the studs. I want that space for a gun and ammo.

What are you listening to right now?
YouTube music thought I might like Softcult (Canadian shoegazer band), and they are correct. They're coming to LA in February and will go see them if I can find anyone that likes this music.

Gold bug / silver bug / numismatic / metals thread
Closer to 70:1 today. My average purchase price ratio was 55:1. I hear you about not swapping until the ratio drops even more, but the thought of carrying just 3 oz of gold instead of lugging around 240 oz of silver (that I don't intend to keep in the long run*) sounds wonderful. * Keeping my maples, libertads, Fijis and a bag of Franklins.

Stock Picks 2026
META popped 5% overnight when they announced they are getting rid of the Metaverse. Some friends are holding onto TSLA because they think Optimus (robot) will be a game changer.

Stock Picks 2026
I've held onto AAPL, GOOG, AMZN since 2013 and they have not disappointed. At this point, I'm still bullish on AMZN because of AWS which will continue to grow. Plus they are dabbling into healthcare. I consider their existing marketplace like a WMT and not an area of continued growth. AI is not going away so I'm staying put on my small positions on NVDA and TSMC. Good points on META. I'll liquidate my 45 shares and dump it into some AI company or fund.
