I did volunteer work for this elementary school in 1999. I built out their computer lab and set up the LAN for their lab. I'll always remember the school and the kids. They didn't have A/C and it was fucking hot. I remember a couple of kids used to play a video game off of a CD they got in a box of cereal. I'll never forget how satisfied they were playing a cheap video game, I still feel sad thinking about it.
There was a teacher that was probably close to retirement that walked me out to the 5th grade recess and started pointing out kids and explained their struggles. I remember her pointing out this really big kid and telling me about his family struggles and how he was a giant teddy bear and the sweetest child. She teared up talking about her students.
I was deeply touched by her care for her students and it always stuck with me. Now, reading about someone in a similar position at the same school inviting trauma on the same community just makes my blood boil.
