  1. For the record, he read the lyrics off the phone but I figure on a request like that you're not required to memorize all those fast words.
  2. Ha! I've lived that exact scenario with that same song. All the little aspiring chanteuses learn "Fancy" on their road to greatness.
  3. Whatever it is, he's good for it. Yeah, strangely lacking the funk.
  4. They always feed us and we never pay a bar tab. Of course, for four hours of play, plus about an hour and a half of set up and take down, I think we only got served 4-5 drink for the entire band. Three out of five of us don't drink, and the two of us that do certainly don't drink much but water when the sun is beating down. Pretty sure I put about 10 cups of water down in about 3 hours there at the beginning. I sweat most of it out. Looking forward to doing it again Friday!
  5. Playing requests is my absolute favorite part of the gigs these days. We have about 8 hours of solid material that is a ton of fun, but not a challenge at this point. When someone comes up mid set and says, "Hey do you know..." that just hits the sweet spot for me. With War Pigs, we all knew it, but had never played it together. Earlier in the night a fella came up and wanted us to play "Sold" by John Michael Montgomery. One of our singers/guitar players said, "you all play a tune, and I'll go out back and learn it." Three and a half minutes later, he came back in, I pulled up the bass on Ultimate Guitar, and we were playing the tune. I had never even heard it before. I got blisters on my fingers from having not played the bass much recently though. It was just bad luck that the fill in gig happened the same day as we'd previously scheduled practice. Seven hours of bass in one day is hell on the old fingertips.
  6. We had a big boost from Cubs crossing over this year. We had unit elections last Monday and had about 25 boys there. Our girls troop is really only about 5-8 girls. Still trying to grow that but our very dedicated scoutmaster had to move for work. I have a potential replacement on the horizon though.
  7. Last night we had to fill in at our favorite venue (Vernon’s Lakeside in Seven Points if you were wondering) for a band that didn’t show. It’s an outdoor venue where the stage looks at the setting son, which is great except it’s August in Texas. The difference between the sun being up and then being down is just amazing. Literally night and day. It goes from being oppressive to just exactly what you’d want. Nice breeze coming in off the lake and people dancing. Anyhow we got a request to play some Ozzy at the very end of the night. Not our usual request but we managed to pull off a pretty bad ass rendition of «War Pigs ». We had never played it together as a group so that was pretty satisfying. Found out they sold the land out from under the place and our last gig there forever is Friday. It’ll probably get turned into tiny little lake front condos. Dammit. No pron this morning. Just laments. Come out and see us Friday if you’re in town. If you know the password, I’ll buy you a drink of your choosing. We will blow it out.
  8. Suppose she just doesn't care, because it's not her?
  9. That sounded great man.
  10. Oh shit. You mean we’re not as great as we thought we were?
  11. Seems like this could go in the Leopards thread?
  12. I’m all for it. Then that group would effectively be cybertrucked. You know what I’m sayin.
  13. They wear all that as a badge of honor. We are post shame now. “Weird” was working ok. Something along those lines would be good.
  14. Since we're speaking of Juniors and Specials, here's an extra special junior Gibson has cleverly dubbed the "Senior." Quite the looker. Maybe I've posted before, I can't recall. I'm sure no one here will complain: Get to diggin' in those couch cushions, y'all. https://reverb.com/item/90905710-gibson-custom-shop-made-2-measure-1954-les-paul-senior-aniline-cherry-red-2022

He's good at knowing the right people. I saw him onstage with a bunch of folks of Clapton's Crossroad's festival when it came through Dallas a while back. He's not great, but he's not bad at all. I'd say he's a competent side man. I was once told that the key to getting good gigs wasn't so much to be a virtuoso. Rather, the key is not to be an asshole. Don't embarrass anyone, know your parts and be fun to be around. I've known tons of guys who play much better than I do. But plenty are divas who not only lord it over everyone else, but demand that you recognize their greatness. Then try and extend a 12 bar solo to...15 minutes? You may play bass better than Geddy Lee, or guitar better than Hendrix. But who wants to spend their time around that?
  16. Have you ever had your credit card company call you and track you down in the strip club? Well, it never happened to me. This friend I was with, however....
  17. Congrats!
  18. Because P-90s slay, and they slay even harder in the bridge position.
  19. He attacked our Federal Court filing system…yesterday I think? Kind of a “see what we can do” moment. https://www.nytimes.com/2025/08/12/us/politics/russia-hack-federal-court-system.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare
  20. Man, that didn't take very long. Of course, he probably doesn't know one has to do with the other.
  21. And somehow find someone else to blame it on.
  22. We aren't Britain and in their case, the war hadn't started yet. Imagine it's mid 1941 and instead of FDR, we have a malevolent Marx Brother as president. I don't see any Churchill waiting in the wings here.
  23. Asked a buddy from Midland about this. He graduated from Lee in the late 80s, went to UT. He said reality is that Midland was founded in 1885, had no slaves, and the inhabitants were mostly midwesterners from Kansas and Missouri. R E Lee was built in 1962, and he believes the locals were highly motivated to name the school RE Lee specifically because of the desegregation battle going on at the time. The other HS in town - the black HS - was named George Washington Carver. Definitely a "separate but equal" vibe there. For anyone in 2025 to claim it was about "heritage" and renaming is a "woke" act, ignores this history. So racists gonna racist, just a couple generations down the line.
