  1. Many of my friends who live in Houston and suburbs are some of the angriest people I know. I think I understand why. Other than the place being an ugly ass concrete jungle mired in shit humid weather, Houston drivers are absolute idiots. It's lord of the flies on the freeways. Ragey agro, inconsiderate drivers added to how big the fucking metro area is, how far you have to drive to go anywhere, and the shittastic traffic means you have a whole city full of angry ass people.

  3. Energy Company CEOs Pros: We incur increase expenses and will pass the cost on to the customers. We add margin to the increased costs. Record profits! Cons: We incure increase expenses and will pass the cost on to the customers. We add margin to the increased costs. Record profits!
  4. We shouldn't have to record them if their own recording equipment mysteriously wouldn't keep failing at the most inopportune times.
  5. Apropos VPNs https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2025/05/vpn-firm-says-it-didnt-know-customers-had-lifetime-subscriptions-cancels-them/ The new owners of VPN provider VPNSecure have drawn ire after canceling lifetime subscriptions. The owners told customers that they didn’t know about the lifetime subscriptions when they bought VPNSecure, and they cannot honor the purchases. In March, complaints started appearing online about lifetime subscriptions to VPNSecure no longer working. The first public response Ars Technica found came on April 28, when lifetime subscription holders reported receiving an email from the VPN provider saying: To continue providing a secure and high-quality experience for all users, Lifetime Deal accounts have now been deactivated as of April 28th, 2025. A copy of the email from “The VPN Secure Team” and posted on Reddit notes that VPNSecure had previously deactivated accounts with lifetime subscriptions that it said hadn’t been used in “over 6 months.” The message noted that VPNSecure was acquired in 2023, “including the technology, domain, and customer database—but not the liabilities.” The email continues: Unfortunately, the previous owner did not disclose that thousands of Lifetime Deals (LTDs) had been sold through platforms like StackSocial. We discovered this only months later—when a large portion of our resources were strained by these LTD accounts and high support volume from users, who through part of the database, provided no sustaining income to help us improve and maintain the service.

  15. I was going to post this on holy shit but realize it's now a thing, at least in France. Attempted kidnap of a daughter of a crypto exec. Paris: Relatives of a Cryptocurrency Company Executive Escape Kidnapping in Broad Daylight On Tuesday morning, the daughter of a cryptocurrency executive was the target of a kidnapping attempt in the 11th arrondissement of Paris. Three masked men tried to forcibly get her into a van. Relatives of a high-profile figure in the cryptocurrency world narrowly escaped a kidnapping attempt this Tuesday morning in central Paris. Three men, whose faces were concealed, attempted—unsuccessfully—to force a mother into a van marked with the Chronopost logo. The incident occurred around 8:20 a.m. on Rue Pache. According to a police source, the 34-year-old victim was accompanied by her 2-year-old child. It remains unclear how the child was spared during the incident. The woman managed to escape thanks to the intervention of the child’s father. The man stepped in and was physically attacked by the kidnappers. The shocking scene unfolded in front of many bystanders, who were afraid to intervene despite the victim’s screams. One of the attackers apparently dropped a handgun—its authenticity remains unknown—before the group fled the scene in a panic, getting back into the van. The vehicle was later found abandoned on another street in the same arrondissement. According to our information, the woman is the daughter of the CEO of a cryptocurrency purchasing platform. The Paris public prosecutor’s office has assigned the case to the anti-gang unit (brigade de répression du banditisme) for further investigation. Just a month ago, the father of a crypto millionaire was kidnapped and lost a finger for the cause. https://www.france24.com/en/live-news/20250504-kidnapped-dad-of-crypto-firm-boss-released-in-french-police-raid The father of a crypto-millionaire who was abducted in Paris on Thursday was freed by French police in a weekend raid, prosecutors said. The kidnappers chopped one of the father's fingers off, a source close to the investigation said, and had tried to force his son to pay a ransom of between five million and seven million euros.

According to the Austin Police Department (APD), a 911 call came in just before 3 a.m. from a family reporting their vehicle was stolen from their driveway in the Sun Chase Neighborhood. Around 3:21 a.m., another 911 call reported a person had been hit by a vehicle near the intersection of Ross Road and Thome Valley Drive, near Del Valle Elementary School. Investigators believe 20-year-old Anthony Salas was shot, hit with a vehicle and killed as he attempted to recover the stolen car near the intersection. Police said the people were seen on multiple cameras burglarizing multiple vehicles throughout South and East Austin on Friday night into Saturday morning.
  18. Can one of you energy guys explain the fuck behind this legislation? Cause on the surface, it looks like a play to protect the O&G fuckheads. https://thehill.com/policy/equilibrium-sustainability/5292792-texas-senate-bill-power-cost/ If passed by the House, state S.B. 715 would require all renewable projects — even existing ones — to buy backup power, largely from coal or gas plants. This would require solar plants in particular to buy backup power to “match their output at night — a time when no one expects them to produce energy and when demand is typically at its lowest anyway,” consultant and energy expert Doug Lewin wrote in an April analysis. The Texas Public Policy Foundation, a right-wing think tank that is one of the bill’s most prominent advocates, argues that it is necessary to make up for the “volatility” of wind and solar power. The state business lobby disagrees. A study by the Texas Association of Business (TAB) found that the legislation would cost the state $5.2 billion more per year — and cost individual consumers $225 more. In addition to more expensive power, the TAB study found, Texans would also get a higher risk of blackouts in the heat of summer or in future ice storms.
