  1. I think increasing elevation 3,000 ft every day or two has done a decent job acclimating them, since we stopped in Lubbock for a night on the way out. Just fighting the dry skin and lips, or unsettling red eyes in my case. My 3 year-old told me unprompted my eyes were scary the other day.
  2. Baby woke up at 4, so we hit the trail at the base of the mountain at dusk. Once everyone else woke up and ate, we took a trail up Snodgrass. Other than not being a fan of horse shit on the trail, the 3 year-old managed to do the 1.5+ miles all on his own. Other than looking like the highest person in Colorado thanks to the dry air and early wakeup, things are going surprisingly smoothly and enjoyable with 2 little ones.
  3. The Hell scene from Fantasia was terrifying. A neighborhood kid with an October birthday always had the scariest parties. IT and Salem's Lot, in particular the scene where the kid vampire floats up to the window, fucked my shit up for years.
  4. Royal Gorge was a hit with the 3 year-old. I managed to spot a golden eagle on the ride but missed the bighorns some other people saw. Finished the night at Bristol Brewing in the old Ivywild School. Taking a piss in a kid's urinal with elementary school murals on the wall is an odd feeling. We drove Monarch into Crested Butte today, and caught their weekly summer concert series. Especially after central Texas suburbia in the summer, this place is fucking idyllic. Baby enjoyed the show.
  5. Just made it to the Springs ourselves. Royal Gorge train with grandpa and the little ones tomorrow, then off to Crested Butte. We brought the heat with us, but 94 degrees with 12% humidity ain't shit.
  6. God damn it, Dad. Did you really have to create a Surly account and make your way to CR? Isn't getting dunked on by all your children and in-laws at every family gathering enough for you?
  7. Since last spring, I think. I saw it last week too, but it was at least 1/4 mile away.
  8. Hahaha, so he's basically Saddam Hussein from the movie 25 years ago.
  9. Incredible, especially the tapir shot. Corcovado is an amazing place.

Those are great birds, but an even more impressive birder. That's legitimately awesome. I still need to read Kingbird Highway.
  11. I'm hoping bringing our young kids will discourage the SIL from taking her dogs off leash on any hikes we do in CB next week. "Oh, there are hardly any people out on these trails!" Yea, but you're previous bulldogs getting porcupined to the face multiple times isn't great for the dogs or the wildlife.
  12. Our first trip to Colorado with the oldest we thought "Let's drive through the night so the baby will sleep." Surprise! Nobody slept. Really set the tone for the rest of the trip in regards to everyone's mood. We will be stopping in beautiful Lubbock on the way this go round.
  13. I've always wanted to stop there, but definitely agree that saving it for a few years will make it more worthwhile.
  14. We're driving to Colorado Springs and Crested Butte with the 3 and 1 year-olds on Friday. The older child went when he was 1. It went...not great. He timed his teething to coincide with the trip. Increasing stranger danger with the family and altitude probably didnt help, but he's starting to chill out a bit, and the baby is still a happy guy, so hopefully this trip is more enjoyable. Then, the day after we get back, we're taking the older child to Danny Go Live. It will either be the best day of his life or completely overstimulating.

Sign up for eBird if you really want to take it to the next level.

    Getting old sucks

I need to do better with my yard feeding stations. We have some screech owls that frequent the house sometimes. I need to take the little one to grandpa's house to make an owl box. Anyone who has visited the bird thread is probably aware of my obsession. Not that I have time to be bored with a 3 and 1 year-old, but when it's not 100 degrees outside, I always have something to go do outside, even in a suburban concrete jungle.

    Getting old sucks

This is true, except for me it happened at 28. If you're old and can't tell what month of the year it is by the birds in your area, what are you even doing?

This is correct. The number of post-podiatry disasters we saw...

    Getting old sucks

I was a PA for a foot & ankle ortho surgeon for 5 years. It's been a minute, but I might still remember some stuff. If the arthritis is within the IP joint (joint within the toe), you can fuse that and immediately weightbear as tolerated in a post-op shoe. Generally, it's in the MTP joint, where the toe meets the foot, and is called hallux rigidus. Unless things have changed dramatically since 2018, you DO NOT want to do a joint replacement. It will likely fail and fusion becomes much more difficult. Fusion requires I believe 4 weeks entirely off the foot and an additional 4 weeks in a post-op shoe. It takes some adjustment, but I believe most people are able to return to most activities. Sometimes you can just shave off bone spurs, as your wife had done. Also, a carbon fiber insert can help limit motion, and thus pain, through the joint. Stiff-soled shoes will be your friend regardless of the route you choose. OTOH, pain with covers touching is a hallmark of gout, but if you have significantly limited dorsiflexion, along with pain, that's almost certainly arthritis.
  20. The first week we can celebrate fucking over the Natives. Then, we can focus on enslavement of blacks. I suppose we could spend a week on the Chinese workers brought over to work on the railroad, Japanese in internment camps and modern post-Covid Asian hate. And I guess we wrap it with our current treatment of Hispanics. Great idea!
  21. Tell me you're not a suburban mom without telling me you're not a suburban mom.
  22. I only caught the last set, but Sinner's groundstrokes are insane. Anyone other than Alcaraz wouldn't have even touched half those shots. Who is going to be the next non-Big 3? (Djokovic wouldn't shock me if he got one more if dodges the top 2)

    Tennis Thread

I've never played on anything but a hardcourt. Playing on clay or grass would be incredible. And after my initial surge of play during my wife's maternity leave with our first, I've been out maybe twice in the last three years. I need to correct that.
  24. "He wasn't there for healthcare purposes, he was just trying to escape from being kidnapped!" is an argument, I guess...
