Birding
Kind of a mixed feelings story about barred owls. They are so successful and have expanded westward across the continent the last century, with tree planting and fire suppression, that they are now threatening the endangered spotted owl. The barred owl is larger, and will kill, outcompete, and hybridize with spotted owls, which also suffer from loss of old-growth forest. To combat this, nearly half a million barred owls are to be culled where the two species overlap.

2024 Presidential Election Thread - Let's keep the party going.
I really just can't with these young voter interviews. Voting third party has never made less sense than it has for the last 8 years. The 3rd party candidate is also an old, white, "elite" who seems absurdly unlikeable and has literal brain worms. Vote in a fucking primary or vote 3rd party in some local races if you want to express dissatisfaction with the two-party system, you fucking morons. I was perhaps more of an idealist a decade ago, but I sure as shit never considered voting for Gary Fucking Johnson. There's a reason third party candidates don't ever get a significant percentage of the vote. They aren't serious people with serious platforms, so stop pretending otherwise. I know this rant has been repeated ad nauseam, but goddamn, young "adults", get your shit together.

The house we moved into was also built in 94. So many wires of unknown purpose.

Birding
I've got some sort of ash in the front yard we inherited when we moved in last year. It already looks like trash and my plant friend said it will probably die soon and need to be dug up.

I was mid-project when I saw your cabinets in the Dad thread and thought "Damn, I hope mine turn out half as nice as those."

Good point. With a 2 year-old boy, and another coming soon, all of our shit is about to get wrecked.

You think I'm making those decisions? I am welcome to make suggestions that may or may not be considered. In all seriousness, we weren't sure we were going green on the bottom when we started. We (lol) also pulled a cabinet off the wall left of the windows and brought the backsplash up, eventually planning on putting up a pair of floating shelves. In person, the new backsplash looks far better and less dated. I did not put it in, BTW. That shit looked not fun to do.

Needed to touch up paint on a couple doors, then get the drawers sanded and painted. There are some imperfections if you get up close, but pretty happy with the transformation.

They grab crawfish out of the little stream in our neighborhood park. You can find them around any pond or creek east of 35 from April-August or so. Cool dudes.

On NPR right now... Florida man, who is benefiting from Obamacare, is happy for Trump to get elected and lose his insurance to do what is best for the country because he's "not selfish". Will simply remarry if he needs help finding Health insurance. Sounds like quite the catch!

At this point I know these people exist. I don't understand it, but I've come to grips with the fact that they are real. But when I actually read the things they say, it hurts my brain. It makes no goddamn sense. How did we evolve to become the dominant lifeform on the planet when a huge chunk of the human population has such dysfunctional thought processes?

Lets talk Hawai'i (for poors)
The helicopter ride is pretty cool. It does kind of suck that they're such a constant presence though.

Lets talk Hawai'i (for poors)
I did a week on Kauai for my honeymoon in 2018. I fell more into the poors classification, although we stretched it for our honeymoon. Stayed at the Sheraton Kauai, so don't have much of a recommendation for lodging outside of a resort. It was close to Poipu Beach, which got crowded, but was pretty good for snorkeling. Fish express near the airport is a great place for poke. As others have mentioned, a lot of the Kauai stuff can be cheap, as it's mostly nature stuff you can do on your own without significant cost. Waimea Canyon is beautiful. You can drive up past that to do some hiking along ridgelines overlooking Pihea Valley. If you're real adventurous, you can continue into the Alaka'i Swamp and try to find some native birds that will probably be extinct soon. We didn't get to do the Na Pali Coast hike, because crazy floods hit right as we arrived and fucked anything past Hanalei, but they look amazing. I'm sure Hanalei is more stunning when not shrouded by rain clouds and devastated by flood waters. The Kilauea Point Lighthouse is a cool overlook with a large seabird colony and the famous Hawaiian Geese. The rum distillery near the airport was cool to check out as well. All the more expensive stuff (helicopter ride, fancy dinners, all-inclusive resort, horseback ride, zipline) are things I wouldn't have included if I was planning a trip solely for myself.

Surly Dad Thread
Little one turns 2 on Monday, with a party at an indoor playplace tomorrow. His first birthday was spent puking and in bed with a fever, so hopefully round 2 goes better. He's very shy and does horribly sitting at a table with people who aren't Mom and Dad, so I'm sure attempting to sing happy birthday and eat cake will be nothing short of a disaster. Little brother is about halfway cooked. It's been a much rougher pregnancy this time around, but it seems like my wife has turned a bit of a corner and is only occasionally feeling miserable, instead of constantly. The first pregnancy she loved me and hated everyone else. I'm more in the everyone else category this time, so that's been fun. I am relieved the 2nd one will be arriving after the worst of the heat, at least.

Nor do they feel shame. Too bad, it's such an unpleasant feeling and they deserve to marinate in it for the rest of their lives.

Finally catching up on last season, and I'm about midway through. Colin Robinson with the weather was fucking great. And Nandor DeLaurentiis 😆

Getting old sucks
Going to the Dr soon for the first time in 4 years, basically just to get a referral for a vasectomy. Feeling pretty good at 36, but my younger siblings are currently pissing out kidney stones and incapacitated from back pain. Hopefully I inherited all the healthy genes. That shit does not sound fun.

Wow, I didn't know he was THAT Royce White. If you fail at your chosen profession, run for office as a GOP, I guess.

Blastfurnace 2024
I was at home with a one year-old all last summer. Good times. I don't know if it will be any easier with him being 2, but at least he's in daycare now. I was really starting to lose it by August.

2024 Presidential Election Thread - Let's keep the party going.
I feel like this is how many of us rationalize friends and family who continue to support Trump. "They're not bad people, they've just been duped!" My parents are in this group. While I would love to believe they care about more than money and are not that racist, I can't blame Fox News alone for their beliefs. I can put a good amount of blame on right-wing media, but my parents are smart enough to not be let off the hook so easily I still love them and I'm not ready to cut them out of my life, as some people on here like to suggest. But I'm not about to give them a free pass on their shitty beliefs because of brainwashing, and if they bring them up around my family or me, we're going to have problems.

Woodworking, DIY, and home repair thread
Was out of town last week, so I only just resumed my work on the cabinets. Waiting for the last couple shelves to cure, but started to put up my doors. I'm really pleased overall, except the fit is just slightly off on some of the doors. I'm not sure if they were this way before (certainly possible, all I could see was the painful honey oak), or if not keeping track of specific hinges threw it off just a little bit. Any suggestions to perfect the alignment?
