Just an FYI, the tenderizing enzyme in pineapple, bromelain, is only in fresh pineapple. The canning process kills all the enzymes. So, if you're using canned juice, it's only for flavor and you can leave it for a long time in the marinade. If you use fresh pineapple, I've never had a good result with more than 8 hours in the marinade. I did some tablitas overnight once and it was so tender, that half the meat fell through the grates while grilling.
On one of the first pages, I talked about this book and it deserves repeating.
This journalist spent a year at Washington, Emory, and Davidson in the admissions department learning about how selections are made and how merit aid is given. It's a quick read and really eye opening about the entire process. Because of my kid's chosen major and her academic profile, we tailored her college list based on what I learned in this book. As a result, she's gotten into every school so far and all but one has given her the maximum amount of merit aid.
My goal is $120,000 in each account since that roughly covers 4 years of in state tuition/room/board.
I am about $5K shy of that goal for my oldest but she'll be there by graduation. I will continue to contribute to her fund through her junior year of college. I made the mistake of doing the age-based option for the first 10 years and that had a shitty return since it was so conservative. Once I switched to just an S&P 500 index, it took off. My youngest is in 6th grade and already has $80,000 in her 529 because her account never wasted time in the age-based fund.
I've spent an obscene amount of time in Tulsa and OKC over the past 15 years. Everyone I've ever met there has been some of the nicest folks I've met...and it never feels like the fake cordiality in Texas. I have the same experience in Austin. But both states are ran by complete assholes for assholes. I think the disconnect is spending most of my time in the larger cities around college educated people and projecting it onto the entire population. I can go 30 minutes outside of my neighborhood that went 85% for Biden and be surrounded by Trump caravans. We went out to Enchanted Rock a few weeks ago and my kid had never seen a Trump sign before. She was like where the fuck did you take me? Is this child abuse?
Junior Brown is now 3/3 acceptances and was offered $22,000/year merit award at the University of Maine. I had forgotten she’d applied there. So, now we just need the Colorado schools, Vermont, and UMass to get off their asses and make a decision.
I guess the remaining insurance carriers in Florida are gone after this storm. Entire state is gonna be financially fucked but at least Disney World will be open the day after.
So, how does the training of OB/GYNs work at Texas medical schools since abortion is part of the required curriculum and that can't be taught in Texas?
Run
My kid got her registration card last week. She turns 18 on the last day of early voting so we will go vote as a family then. She asked if it's kosher to flash both middle fingers and yell "FUCK TRUMP" as she exits the polling station. I said, you'll be an adult, do what you want.
The cherry on top of Trump getting his ass handed to him is the GOP is going to have a negative bank balance and owe millions in unpaid bills across the country. The only business Trump has successfully run is his fleecing of the GOP of all their money.
Just got back from Sisters of Mercy. They’ve been really good the past two times they’ve played Moody. BLAQK AUDIO opened and I liked them a lot. It’s a post new wave side project from the AFI frontman.
