- We're probably burying the lead here in alerting you that Kelvin Banks played the best first game by a freshman in the history of the Deep Dig. Yes, he did and in allowing one sack that probably would not have happened had Cole Hutson not missed his assignment, but that is how we chose to slice it, giving half of the blame to each player based on the run-out. Banks also had a false-start penalty. Considering he played less than 40 snaps total, it makes his snaps/disruption-allowed number look worse than you would imagine when juxtaposed with how high his grade was. The reason his grade was so high, though, is, outside of those two plays, Banks was basically flawless. Just an outstanding debut. Outside of the two plays mentioned, Banks was only given a negative grade for a rep on two other snaps TOTAL. Crazy.

- The closest freshman debut grades since the start of the Deep Dig to Banks' 79.86 were: Sam Cosmi (redshirt/2017): 77.18 versus Maryland and Connor Williams (2015): 77.75 versus Notre Dame. This is something to keep in mind in the likely case that we see Banks have some freshman struggles against a juggernaut Alabama team in Week 2.

- Cole Hutson is not as bad as his initial grades and snaps/disruption-caused numbers would indicate, but he needs to be more consistent. Like we said about Banks, Hutson's good reps were actually really good, and something that can be said of the entire offensive line versus ULM is that they played nastier and with better motor than we'd generally seen from the unit in recent years. Heck, we can't remember the last time every member of the OL generated at least a pin and/or a knockdown block. These guys were banging in there and FINISHING in the run-game which opened up good holes for multiple runners to take advantage of. Hutson fits in well with that personality of OL, but, again, needs to bring it play-in and play-out. The reason he is starting over more talented guys like DJ Campbell is clearly because the staff views Hutson as further along in his understanding of the offensive scheme. If Hutson doesn't improve, at some point the staff will need to elect to take its lumps (if it's going to have to take them anyway) with the player who's much more likely to deliver the higher eventual upside in DJ Campbell.

What the hell is the point of having an entire scale that ranges from 72.5 -87? At least plot the grades on a larger scale, like 0-100 so there’s more noticeable gaps between the performances.

I think it so Fan bases don’t go nuts. Seeing Hutson get a 74 is probably easier on his constituents, than saying Hutson got an F and Jones got a D-

On Horn they were just talking about how on 5-6 plays they had Andre out there as a tight end with the five starting lineman in the game.

Is this Sark thinking of ways to neutralize Bama edge rush?

Sark throwing shit out there to make Bama waste time game planning it?

A yikes indictment on our TE depth?

Ahh no. Bama also runs that formation.

That’s a strong RPO look, and hard to ignore. Karic isn’t going to catch any passes so does Bama dare stay in smaller personnel and risk getting run over, relatively speaking, or do they upsize and risk matching a LB or S up on one of our skill players.

Bama runs it too. They run a fair amount of the stuff Sark left behind, it’s just BOB runs the etch a sketch version of Sark’s offense and has filthy enough talent to get away with it.

That’s helpful- thanks.  Rod failed to mention (that I heard) the history with Sark/Bama and made it sound like an original look.

At 10:30 mark, Joe Cook asks about Karic at Tight End...

Sark:  Depth with Billingsley out, Blocking in a power needed situation, and just to Fuck with Bama...

Regardless of scale, it seems that Dunlap’s stats show the majority of our OL had a “snaps per disruption allowed” average against ULM that would put them near the very bottom of all of our OL in the last decade based on their season averages (which means all those other players achieved that average against a full schedule where 95% of the games are against better teams than ULM).  But then his tone is pretty much that our OL was better against ULM than we have been in recent years.

Um, ok.  What am I missing?

Well, I would say a big factor is 3 of the 5 starters played 37 snaps or less, which is not a lot at all. So just 1 or 2 disruptions is going to ding them pretty heavily compared to if they had 1 or 2 disruptions in 70 or 75 snaps. Obviously more snaps means more chances for disruptions, but if you are only playing pretty much half a game then it’s going to skew averages.

I think he said this was the first time in 9 years that every OL had a pancake block. He thought this was the most aggressive OL he has seen, since he started grading 9 years ago.

The OL was unexpectedly good in pass pro.  They were far from perfect, but they were WAY better than I thought they would be with 2 of the best pass rushers in the game lining up opposite them.  Their running game production was a disappointment.  I know Bama has a really stout front, but I was expecting us to open up some holes.  Bijan had no chance on most of his runs.  It's a really young line though.  I think we'll have one of the top offensive lines in the country next year.  I think we'll be well above average at the end of this season.

With the amount of offsides going on, they were way better than expected even with those two pass rushers lining up next to them too.

Believe Texas only gave up 13 total pressures(2 of them sacks, 1 a result of a bijan turf slip) on the night, outperforming all power 5 teams they played last year.

And at least 1 of the sacks was Hudson just holding on to the ball too long

The OL didn't really have a chance when Card had to play, and even less of a chance after Card got hurt to start the 3Q. Just an unbelievable job by Sarkisian to have to pivot from his preferred gameplan twice in 2 hours. Once going from Ewers to Card, then again from Card to one legged Card.

I think Bijan would have broken off some a couple of 15+ runs had Ewers been healthy all game, with the way our WRs were destroying their secondary. But Bama just doesn't have a good DL, their 2 off-ball LBs are likely high NFL draft picks as well.

Looks like Banks should have blocked down. Bama also seemed to know what was coming. They had it played well.

This play had no chance of working. Bama brought 6 against our 5, and Bijan slipped at the mesh point. It was just a bad call, should have gone with RoJoCat with a GoGo look. Fake the handoff to Robinson and hit Keilan Robinson in the flat. That was wide open earlier in the game.

Disagree with the discussion around that play. Sark got Whittington one-one-one against Dallas Turner. Very close to being a repeat of the deep shot to Bijan. It's an awesome play design.

The key to it is that the play fake to Bijan has to hold Will Anderson, but Bama has a DB blitzing from his side so he can play down very aggressively without having to worry about edge responsibility. Then, Bijan steps on Card's foot - perhaps Card's footwork was different by a couple inches with the injury - but Bijan had been awesome as a pass blocker all day. He stonewalled Turner and Anderson multiple times.

If not for a really unfortunate series of events, Card has another half second and he hits JWhitt for at least a 15 yard gain and possibly a touchdown.

Agree on the potential there wuth how the routes were unfolding, had one bama guy in no man’s land guarding two wr’s. Bijan slip sealed but still was dead to rights given the blitzers on both sides

What? If there’s some degree of protection, Whittington is running down the sideline for a TD.

I love me some Bijan, but any play that relies on Bijan blocking Will Anderson is a win for Bama. On this play Will Anderson and Turner (I think) are coming untouched. Bijan isnt cleaning up both.

We need 3 yards. A TD would be great, but the first is the objective. And that wheel route to Whitt is not a given. If that corner stays, it’s not clearly open. Plus short side of the field makes it more congested until the play fully develops.

Even blocking Anderson doesn’t necessarily save the play. But yeah sure, if we block both guys, it works.

With that play call, Whitt and Sanders need time to get into their route. Any pressure kills it. The DE isn’t going to allow enough time for a throw to Whitt.

The big question is whether to block the backside DE. Cause with that action the QB has to be his. With the play fake, my initial assumption is that we leave him unblocked. If so, that’s on the play call because he’s dumb to chase the RB action (so assume he won’t) and then because Card has no quick option.

If Whitt goes to the flat, he likely pulls that guy out quicker and allows the throw to Sanders. If there’s no Whitt motion, Sanders might be open enough.

The play is a nice setup but not the best choice given that you’d assume Bama is not going to sit back and allow it to develop.

On rewatch with the broadcast angle, I see that Ebiogbe (#92 coming off the right side; Turner is guarding JWhitt) is a bigger problem than I thought. I stand by liking the play design and call though. Not sure about the OL assignments but I think someone made a mistake to allow 2 guys unblocked. And maybe that mistake was just Bijan slipping. It's Justin Ebiogbe coming off the right side. I had kind of missed that, so an immobile card may have been done for regardless. Healthy QBs have a shot against a DL re-accelerating after pausing for the play fake, but maybe Card was done for.

On Bijan's pass pro: 7:44, 9:04, 9:56, 13:47, 23:41, 28:30, 31:17, 45:08, 49:56 (the play in question) at this link https://youtu.be/cgofO6tB3AU

Those are all of Bijan's pass pro reps that I saw. He was flawless. His improvement over last year is amazing. 7:44 (against Anderson), 13:47 (against Anderson), 23:41, and 45:08 are especially impressive.

Also, I now definitely think the tripping incident was on Card. Ewers has the same fake at 9:04. It should be right foot back, left foot forward, fake. Sets you in throwing position. Card moves his right foot first but doesn't get it back. Not blaming him because he was injured and I thought he played pretty well overall.

It is not a slam at Bijan's pass pro, it is simply the truth. Golden wants to get arguably the best pass rushed in the nation matched up on a RB anytime he can. Nobody on the Texas staff wants Bijan being matched up 1 on 1 vs Anderson

7:44 - chip and hands him off to Jones

9:04 nobody shows up

13:47:  Chip and hand off to Connor.

23:41 nothing to see here

45:08 nice pick up on the safety. That is a match-up a RB can win

OT Kelvin Banks – Texas

Texas left tackle Kelvin Banks is the lone repeat standout from last week. Holding your own against Alabama and Will Anderson – one of the college football’s best pass rushers in recent memory – is certainly enough for recognition on consecutive weeks. Banks was a key part of a young Longhorn offensive front that held up quite well in the 20-19 loss to the nation’s No. 1 ranked team. On3’s top-ranked tackle in the 2022 cycle gave up just one pressure and zero sacks in 45 pass blocking attempts against the Crimson Tide front, per Pro Football Focus.

Banks was not the only true freshman offensive lineman to perform at a high level for Texas. Cole Hutson started his second game at right guard and also gave up just one pressure on the day. The season is very young, but Banks’ performance as an 18-year old true freshman left tackle is certainly fitting of his No. 6 overall ranking from On3.

Banks got confused becase Bama blitzed the CB next to Anderson too. Banks has to pick up the guy closest to the QB, which was Anderson. Bijan not tripping would have blocked the blitzing DB, if he didn't run himself out of the play. The backside DE is almost never blocked in these type of concepts, so him coming free is not a surprise. I still wouldn't have called the play considering Card is hobbled and you have a free DL by design that he would have to potentially avoid, not to mention Card freezes when he has to make quicker decisions like this one a lot more than he completes the play.

Sorry, to clarify, I was just providing context around Bijan's pass blocking, not trying to argue he's a winning matchup against Anderson. I think there was a breakdown somewhere along the line on that play. I originally thought Anderson was the guy left free but it was Ebiogbe.
