Spoiler

Just caught up with 6-foot-2, 180-pound Longview (Texas) wide receiver Jalen Hale after the Lobos’ win over Texas High in basketball.

The On3 Consensus No. 48 2023 prospect says Texas, Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State, and USC are recruiting him the hardest right now.

Hale, who was sick for a few days before tonight’s district tilt, doesn’t have any visits or trips scheduled at the moment. But there are not many places he hasn’t been to.

Two schools that Hale noted were making a move in his recruitment were Texas and Southern Cal.

With Texas, Hale loves the 2022 class it just signed and thinks the Horns are preparing for life in the SEC. He also noticed Xavier Worthy’s breakout freshman campaign.

With USC, Hale still loves Lincoln Riley. Once a heavy OU lean, Riley is still pushing for the East Texas native and Hale is certainly listening.

One important job for new Texas WR coach Brennan Marion will be continuing to build his relationship with Hale and getting him back on campus this spring.

Good to see Wells still trying to make #bEASTtexas a thing

IT

Spoiler

Looking at the recruiting calendar it's clear that the month of February has a chance to be the launchpad for the 2023 class's recruiting momentum. Eric mentioned in the scoop that IT still believes a February decision is most likely for Arch Manning, Devon Campbell will be announcing his decision, and IT has heard of multiple 2023's with a chance to pop commitments if Texas pushes come February. While none of those potential developments are guarantees, it is worth monitoring as we get closer to NSD2 and the first set of junior days.

A source that told me that OU hiring Clemson DL coach/recruiting coordinator Todd Bates will vault them close to the top in the DJ Hicks recruitment. Hicks, the No. 5 overall player in the country according to the On3 consensus, has been vocal about Bates having the strongest relationship with him out of any recruiter. While Texas will get their shot to gain ground with the No. 1 player in-state for 2023, right now this seems to be setting up as an A&M vs. OU battle with national powerhouses in the mix as well.

I recently caught up with 2023 Mansfield Timberview IOL Andre Cojoe who told me that while he wasn't certain on the exact date he would likely visit Austin again in late January or February. Cojoe is a prospect that clearly fits the mold OL coach Kyle Flood is looking for and is a player that Flood immediately made a priority once getting to Texas and has consistently pushed for since offering. While they haven't offered yet Oklahoma is a school to watch here as Cojoe and OU OL coach Bill Bedenbaugh communicate almost daily.

Going to suck seeing Hicks end up at aggy or OU.

Some notes on Junior Day from IT:

* They're not sure if the staff are having multiple Junior Days or a single event (on the 22nd)

* Rueben Owens won't attend due to a 7on7 tournament

* Johntay Cook is a maybe

* No word yet on Arch

Time to pay up.

Adding to this, they just said Jaydon Chatman (one of the best OL in-state) is confirmed for Jan 22.

Good catch - here's the current full list for anyone interested

Spoiler

2023

WR/TE Jaden Greathouse, Westlake (Austin, TX):

After picking up a Notre Dame offer last week, the 6-foot-2, 220-pound standout continues to add offers to his impressive high school resume. Greathouse continues to get close to the UT staff, he tells IT. The Westlake pipeline is flowing to UT right now.

WR Ashton Cozart, Marcus (Flower Mound, TX):

The On3 Consensus No. 63 prospect is set to see Austin again. After almost pledging to OU in December, Cozart has slowed down the recruiting process and continues to build relationships. Cozart recently spoke to Brennan Marion and hops to get to know the new wide receiver coach better, he tells IT. Oklahoma is still creeping.

OL Ian Reed, Vandegrift (Austin, TX):

At 6-foot-6, 290 pounds, the ATX native holds offers from Colorado, TCU, Tulsa, and Kansas. Texas Longhorns recruiting: 2023 OT Ian Reed on the radar (on3.com).

OL Connor Stroh, Wakeland (Frisco, TX): The big-country looking offensive tackle hears from the Horns often. Old-man strength too.

OL Jaydon Chatman , Killeen (Texas) Harker Heights: The early offer by the Longhorns will also make January junior day visits to Baylor and Oklahoma.

LB Caleb Otlewski, Melissa (Melissa, TX):

The 6-foot-4, 205-pound linebacker is hearing from Texas, Baylor, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Clemson, and Washington State, he tells IT. UT likes Otlewski at inside or outside linebacker, potential baseball prospect, and the oldest of three with a single mom.

LB Derion Gullette, Marlin (Marlin, TX):

LB Samje Burrell, North Crowley (Fort Worth, TX)

S Joenel Aguero, St. Johns Prep (Danvers, MA):

The On3 four-star will see UT on January 21st. With over two dozen offers including Alabama, Auburn, and Clemson, it appears Georgia has the early lead in his pursuit.

S Derek Williams, Westgate (New Iberia, LA):

The On3 Consensus No. 41 prospect for 2023 holds 17 offers including Alabama, OU, Florida, Auburn, and LSU. The 6-foot-2, 185-pounder plays safety, corner, and running back for Westgate and is also scheduled to visit Michigan in January as well.

EDGE Brad Spence, Forest (Klein, TX):

It's a little surprising the 6-foot-1, 215-pounder only holds a handful of offers. Texas. Colorado, Louisiana Tech, and Kansas jumped in the boat early for this athletic specimen.

DB Tay’Shawn Wilson, Mayde Creek (Houston, TX):

At 5-foot-9, 167 pounds, he won't be unranked for long. Boasting offers from Texas, Notre Dame, Baylor, and Texas A&M, Wilson visited Austin a couple times in 2021 and holds the Horns in the highest regard.

2024

DE Nigel Smith, Melissa (Melissa, TX):

It was a little surprising when the 6-foot-4, 245-pound defensive lineman didn't get offered by Texas during a visit last fall. Notre Dame, LSU, Texas Tech and Rutgers have already joined the mix, and I'd be even more shocked if UT doesn't offer soon.

LB Colin Simmons, Duncanville (Duncanville, TX):

DB Aeryn Hampton, Daingerfield (Daingerfield, TX):

The recent Baylor de-commit is back on the market and looking hard at the Longhorns. The 5-foot-10, 175-pound athlete holds seven offers including Texas, Oklahoma State, Baylor, TCU, and Arkansas. I wouldn't be surprised to see Hampton make a move early in 2022.

If Owens has a 7v7 tourney wouldn’t a lot of others too? If so, big oversight from our staff to pick a weekend with a common conflict.

Or maybe there will be a second one.

Scoop:

Some 2023 nuggets

On3 Consensus 4-star CB/ATH Bravion Rogers (La Grange, Texas) told On3 Sunday that he will not be at the Texas junior day January 22. That is because he will be on campus this weekend for an unofficial visit, the first day following the dead period. The 6-foot, 180-pounder also has plans to attend Baylor's junior day on January 30. The Longhorns and TCU have been the two favorites for some time.

On3 Consensus 4-star receiver Johntay Cook (DeSoto, Texas) is a maybe/likely for Texas January 22 and Texas A&M January 29. Cook will very likely make a couple of out-of-state visits in the next couple of months as well, but IT believes in-state schools have the lead.

On3 Consensus 4-star receiver Ashton Cozart (Flower Mound, Texas/Marcus) will be at Texas January 22, and Oklahoma January 29. TCU’s Malcolm Kelly is the best position coach relationship the 6-foot-3, 180-pounder has currently. He likes OU quite a bit too. UT likely has a little ground to make up.

On3 Consensus four-star Mikal Harrison-Pilot (Temple, Texas) isn't likely for UT's junior day in two weeks, but he'll be back in Austin during the spring time, he tells IT. MHP holds offers from virtually everyone in the country and netted a Stanford verbal invitation on Friday.

Lovejoy receiver Kyle Parker (5-10.5, 175) will likely make a junior day at Penn State at the end of the month. Parker has been in contact with Texas receivers coach Brennen Marion since he was hired by Steve Sarkisian, but there has not been a lengthy conversation. Something to monitor the remainder of January.

Fort Worth All Saints WR Chris Palfreeman tells IT he'll be at the UT Junior Day on 1/22. The 5-foot-10, 160-pounder is also set to see Texas A&M (1/29), Arkansas, and Baylor over the next few months. The track standout owns the best relationships with the Longhorns, SMU, and Baylor. Steve Sarkisian's offense has his attention, and he has a prior relationship with new Texas WR coach Brennan Marion, who offered him last year at Pitt.

On300 Katy Paetow CB Cortez Hunter wants to attend UT's junior day, but he's trying to secure a ride. The 5-foot-11, 164-pound defensive back is in consistent contact with the Horns staff. Hunter holds offers from Miami and Arkansas.

On300 Coppell CB Braxton Myers is set to see Austin for junior day on 1/22. The Consensus four-star has seen his stock rise over the last month, with Michigan, Oklahoma State, USC, and Arkansas jumping into the mix.

On300 Dickinson CB Vernon Glover wants to make another return trip to Austin, where he's seen the Horns a few times since last summer. Ole Miss, Texas Tech, and Baylor are also in pursuit for the up-and-coming defensive back.

Why does he keep looking back at the ball in the air? Isn't that illegal? I've never seen the Longhorn CBs turn around and look for the ball before.

Which of those receivers who can't separate are we chasing? Not that they'd be too hard to catch up with.

I have a bad feeling Johntay will be the next long-time heavy UT lean to suddenly go aggy. Largely bc he’s being trained by Hooks whose pupils all seem to have weird recruitments.
