Princi Italia on Preston/Royal? We went for the first time a couple Sundays ago with my in-laws and my parents and I was extremely unimpressed. But that was brunch.

Yes.  I've only done dinner and it's been good.  Went several times per year back in the day pre-kids when we wanted Italian without much of a wait/reservation. That said, it's actually been over a year since last visit and only once post-COVD so not sure if fallen off.

Well, THAT was inevitable!

The old Carbone's filed suit in fed court today agains the hipster Carbone.

The allegations are pretty damning. Should be interesting.

I don't know what this could do in terms of the longevity of the hipster Carbone, but if you boys intend on going there, perhaps sooner would be better than later.

I'm not quite sure where to put this but I think Sister fits (sort of) in Italian. Mrs C-Man and I went with her parents and brother tonight for MIL's birthday. We thought it was pretty fantastic all around. They did a nice job on the renovation of the old Grape spot. (I loved the Grape and Courtney and Brian are great but the space itself needed an update.) We got a bunch of stuff and just shared it like they recommend (just like The Charles). Highly recommend.

Anyone ventured to Dolce Riviera lately? It apparently was closed for almost two years. We never made it but it was always on our list.

Think we will not sweat going to Carbone in Dallas anytime soon. Love Monarch and The Charles. Wondered if DR measured up to either?

Interesting.  I'm certainly no expert in "common law" trademark or claims regarding improper trademark for Carbone (nor did I care to read the entire thing cover to cover) but the pre-packaged food claims using existing Dallas Carbones logo is interesting. Not exactly sure what the existing Carbones' damages are for people mistakenly coming to their restaurant thinking it was the new trendy place.  I would bet discovery reflects increased revenue since Carbone opened.

Damages aren't really or shouldn't be the "grail" in trademark litigation. They are legally difficult to obtain absent really willful infringement.

It's all about the injunction.

That's a pretty wacky case.

There is a territorial component to trademark rights, and because Carbone's actually used in Dallas long before Carbone set foot in Dallas or even Texas or the southwest, Carbone's would have superior rights in Dallas, maybe even statewide, and would win.

That would be true even if Carbone owned a federal registration, which presumptively gives nationwide territorial rights.  A prior user, like Carbone's, has superior rights in the territory in which it actually used the mark.

The wrinkle is that Carbone filed its registration under the intent-to-use provisions, which permit filing before a trademark is actually used anywhere.  And that filing date predates Carbone's use in Dallas.  And presumptively gave Carbone nationwide rights, even though it hadn't used the mark at all.

That doesn't happen very often.

And it may underscore that the intent-to-use provisions of the Federal Trademark Act are unconstitutional.

If you remember, il mulino was also impossible to get into (for awhile) when they were in Uptown and was very high priced and then all the sudden shut down. Same with Nine steakhouse in Victory. We could easily see same thing with Carbone. I thought about going there in Hong Kong and looked at the menu and we passed.

holy shit.  that is a blast from the past. il mulino was the talk of the town.  "OMG! Dallas is getting an NYC restaurant."  total bust.

As bigup said, high end Italian has never done that well here for some reason so I was stoked to have 2 options (have never understand how this city can support what seems like an infinite amount of high end steak joints but struggles with Italian).  II love me a high end veal parm (and the Monarch Veal Parm is fantastic).  Hoping Carbone figures it out.

y'all remember the disaster that was Circo?  that shitty high-end Italian joint on McKinney lasted about 6 months.

https://www.dmagazine.com/food-drink/2019/06/circo-dallas-is-closed/

we'll see how Carbone does.

and Carbone's on Oak Lawn is bad ass.  as C-Man says, those St. Louis style toasted ravioli are the bomb.  just a nice, small, clean menu of Italian classics.  i had no idea the place existed until 2017 when i was training for a marathon.  i wanted to find more Italian restaurants so i could carb load for long runs.  i was going to the same old spots.  i stumbled onto Carbone and have been going there ever since.  same with Pane Vino Osteria in Addison.  another great Italian spot y'all should try.

I put Carbone’s om my list whenever it was that we did the best Dallas restaurants thing.

We went to Carbone on Tuesday for DDD's birthday dinner (her choice).  5:15 reservation.  LOL.

The service was very good and the food was wonderful.  Was it worth $650 for a four top (one round of cocktails, 1 $75 bottle of wine with dinner, 1 appetizer for the table, 2 entrees-rigatoni and branzino, two desserts)?  Hell no.  Will I go back?  Not if I'm paying.

I still want to try Carbone's.  Everything I've heard about it is positive.

We went to the Lucia for our first sit down meal there since pre-pandemic.  We live nearby and used to go often, but just had not made it to the new spot.

I'll echo dcbc: the meal was just a "wow".   Blew Monarch away.  Food was just incredible.  You think it's the best (tomato crostini, steak tartare, risotto, goat cheese ravioli) that you have ever had.  Service was delightful and the wine list is as great as ever.  We went through two bottles, a $58 Barbera and a $90 Brunello.  There are not many places in town that offer quality wines at those prices (or double or triple those prices). As is always the case there, the entre was the weakest link of the meal.  We normally just order more appetizers and pastas.

The new spot is not as charming as the original little space (though they did nicely incorporate elements of the old restaurant) but I can see how well it works.  They have at least 2x the covers and a full cocktail menu now.  The bar is for full dinner service and by reservation only.  There is no walking in here, which is a shame, but I get it.  They sell out every seat.

Well, in fairness, that’s two completely different experiences. Kinda like comparing a Vegas resort to a boutique hotel. I mean, yeah they’re both hotels, and these are both Italian restaurants, but get past that and it’s pretty apples and oranges.

I am not sure I understand that.  Yes, they are different.  But in every respect other than the view, Lucia was much better:  hospitality, service, food quality, presentation, value.  I do get that the Monarch experience is different and believe me, we will go back (although I prefer Kessaku upstairs), but if I had to recommend an Italian restaurant to someone, it would be Lucia.

The owners just pour themselves into that restaurant.  They were telling us about the stuff on the walls.  A lot of it is very personal because, as you saw, they had a lot more wall space to fill on pretty short notice.  So they were grabbing stuff from their home.

By the time I get to the entre, I'm usually so stuffed, I would have trouble truly appreciating it.

I think what he's saying is a big part of the appeal of Monarch is a "big night out" scene/experience.   Lucia food/service focused and stellar at that.   But not the type of place people are necessarily wanting to go if doing a big night on the town or big celebration with a group of friends (I haven't been to the new place but assuming it's maintained the same vibe).

Same. Chef friend I've mentioned here, who trained at Cordon Bleu in Paris and was the executive chef who opened Al Biernat's originally, said Lola was his favorite place in town to go when he was eating someone else's food. That was good enough for me. Need to finally check Lucia off the list.

Due to not having a fully-functioning kitchen because of water damage in our kitchen/master bedroom (refrigerator leak in mid-June, not biblical rain event from earlier this week) we have been eating out A LOT. Knocked out Bugatti's right around the corner from the house last night. Been wanting to try it for years. Wife used to go with her mother back when she was a teenager -- 25-30 years ago! At any rate, we walked in around 8:15 last night and it was pretty dead. I really, really enjoyed it. It's not high-end but hits the American Italian high notes and I really enjoyed it. The price point is slightly below the top local Italian places. The patio will be very nice once the weather gets better too.

Look, it's not Monarch or Carbone or any of Julian Barsotti's places but it seems like a nice, little neighborhood joint that you don't have to plan several months out.

That is a good place.  I'm usually downtown, so I more often go to Terilli's on Greenville to scratch that itch.  I like to eat at the bar.  It is nice when a fun dinner doesn't have to be a big production!

Looking at OU weekend. Thinking an Italian place for one night since we’re doing steakhouse one night and sushi another. Also Italian in San Antonio is generally meh.

Grabbed two reservations just based off poking around internet. Bugatti’s by Love Field and La Stella Cucina verace in the Arts District. Looking for good and lively joints. Couples, no kids.

Thoughts from the locals here? Anywhere else that y’all would recommend trying?

Bugatti's is a neighborhood place. It's pretty good food-wise but I wouldn't consider it a destination place if I was in from out of town. Never heard of La Stella Cucina Verace.

Just saw the local Carbone's dismissed the lawsuit against the interloper Carbone.

It said no settlement pending.  https://dallas.eater.com/2022/9/26/23372745/carbones-drops-lawsuit-carbone-dallas

I'm guessing that means he ran out of money, and if the suit is actually dismissed, that Carbone consented, so there isn't a current pending infringement suit by either one.

The fact of the matter is that, given only one location each in Dallas, most folk know which one they're getting and if they don't and want one or the other can figure it out by noticing the differences in the names and locations.  So that means there probably isn't any real likelihood of confusion.

EDIT:  Well, found a docket without having to get into PACER, and it appears that it settled at a mediation, so the terms perhaps required no announcement.  https://www.courtlistener.com/docket/63351637/25/carbones-fine-foods-and-wines-llc-v-the-major-food-group-llc/

None of that gives rise to the conclusion that the interloper Carbone isn't a worthless sack of shit that we should all avoid patronizing.

The kind of lawsuit we're talking about probably cost a quarter of a million dollars to date, with much more to come.  While they probably didn't "run out of money," that puts a pretty hefty dent in profits.  And, afaik, restaurant groups are heavily reliant on investors who weren't wild about spending that kind of money on a single-location restaurant.

As my original mentor said regarding trademark suits, a goodly portion of people are confused about most things most of the time, you just have to live with it.  If there's a rational basis for telling the two apart, that's probably enough.

As exemplified by this thread, restaurants go by word of mouth and reviews, generally speaking.  Anyone making a recommendation of one or the other will tend to be explicit about which one they're talking about, and same with reviews.

I don't know what happened and honestly don't really care. To clarify, Carbone's is a single restaurant but Julian and his group own two more successful Italian restaurants in addition to Carbone's and also opened a Tex-Mex place in Inwood Village earlier this year that is absolutely killing it.

Even a very successful localized restaurant business probably can't sustain six-figure quarterly hits for very long on a lawsuit with a hazy outcome.  Like most trademark lawsuits, this one had a hazy outcome.

You nailed it. I’ve watched owners of businesses I’ve worked for spent ghastly sums to fight flush it level problems. Though the worst was I got brought into at a huge national retailer. We were getting sued by those IP pirated in Marshall. I said this is extortion. Let’s go to court. The company litigator then said, “I’m just not comfortable in courtrooms…”

Lucia was just named a top 20 Italian restaurant in the nation by Tasting Table.

I keep a tab for their site up and check it regularly as it is local, we live in Kessler, and there is normally something within 10 days available. Now it is booked pretty much to the end of what’s open for reservations. Guessing eating there once a month is over without daily diligence.

We live in the area too.  If you follow them on Facebook, they announce same day table availability pretty regularly.   I ate there on the 2nd day they were open.  We ate there 3 times last year.  It's better now.   At the top of the game.  My only complaint is that they no longer offer a small salumi plate, only the large one, which is way too much for 2 people and would take the place of all other appetizers, which I won't do.

We had a party end early and were able to slip into Lucia for a table outside.  Don't try this at home.  My wife has known one of the owners since birth.  We felt terrible for the short notice, but we were fed extremely well.  As we were told, "We aren't uncomfortable telling you "No" if we need to.

We smartly didn't over order this time.  Agree that the salumi is so tempting, but almost a meal in itself.  We opted out last night, but if we lived closer, we'd hit it up more.  Just one of each course.  Crostini (so simple and great), inky shrimp (very solid), pork (extra solid), Semi-Freddo (Wow!).

It all was amazing, but damn that semi-freddo slammed so hard.  Love this place.

Pretty sure a good friend of ours just went and said it was incredible. We're supposed to go soon but it's really tough to get a reso, based on what they were saying.

Any chance your friend could help me score a table for four at a more reasonable hour? Wink, wink.

Was there last Monday for my birthday dinner. Pro tip, if you go in Resy you can set up a notification for a cancellation at a better hour on the night you want a table.

our reservation originally was at 5:45. The night before I got an email around 8 pm that a 7 pm table opened up. Snatched it immediately.
