He really should've come back for his senior season to refine his game.  Pretty clear at this point the coaching his first two years under the Strong regime was subpar.  Another year under TO might've helped him go higher in the draft and stick longer in the league.  Pulling for him to get picked up elsewhere.

He might get picked up to do some special teams or something but I doubt he'll do much linebacking.  Scuttlebutt is that his exceptional athleticism isn't much above average at the pro level, and the game is too fast for him - still.

But, in what would turn out to be a miracle, a Surly poster (me) could be wrong and he could blossom somewhere else.

I doubt it, though.

His athleticism is still well above average, but that is entirely negated by how slow he processes things. If he vet picks it up mentally, he could be really good, but it’s not looking too promising.

How many guys is it that Have declared early for Texas now should have stayed another year?

Way too many flameouts

A lot.

Charlie recruited guys to himself, not UT and a lot of the Strong holdovers, never bought into the new program, even the ones that had some success, like Malik, Deshon, LJH, etc., which is why so many guys declared early to their detriment.

Your point about the players and Charlie has merit, but I think the argument that a career ending injury ruining their chance at the NFL plays a large part too. It's a legitimate concern that often sways their decision when it shouldn't. Brandon Jones and Collin Johnson made the wise decision IMO.

I remember getting breakfast at the convenience store/grille thing at the bottom of San Jac the summer before his junior year when I went back to school for a bit....I would start my day there before working out in Gregory and hitting a few summer school classes and he would often be in there with the other players going through the summer workouts.  He was always cordoned away from his team by a bunch of slick guys in suits who were fawning over him with forced whispers while he was doing his best to be polite while caring more about his head phones than whatever this latest hanger on seemed to be pitching.

I don't know that they were "agents" but they were definitely some sort of "branding, imaging, marketing" guys ....and back then, he was the face of the team and I am sure that he was being pumped full of how they were going to "take that to the next level" sooner than later.

Guy was and probably still is a freak athlete who is now, sadly, another victim of bad advice.

Wonder where the guys in the suits are now?

Another example the staff can use when showing guys they need to stay in school, along with LJ and others.

Yep.  Sergio was a bad, bad mother fucker. Ask the Alabama tackles he fucking shit on all night in the Rose Bowl.  Had Colt not gotten hurt we win that game easily.  Because our front 7 was butt fucking Alabama until they got worn out from repeated 3 and outs and 5 turnovers.

i never thought Malik wasn't that great at UT.  He was a straight line tackler, couldn't handle cuts at his size.  Should've been an outside pass rush specialist and nothing more.

also, long time ago, what was the true story of Sergio? Car accident ended his days? Refresh me plz.  He was a heck of alot more talented than MJ.

He had a car accident in college where he crashed into a building at like 2am, abandon the scene and went home to sleep it off. He wasn’t charged with DUI, iirc. He ended his career when he fell down a flight of stairs and smashed his head/fractured his skull, presumably while shit faced. Something like that?

Yup. Sucks for the guys who didn't hang around. Kris Boyd and Devante Davis are the first wave of Strongs guys that went pro after finishing with a few years under Herman.

He was a party animal at Texas. Then after he's in the pros one day he just "fell down his stairs in his house and hit his head."........

It was a terrible decision to declare for both him and the program. He would've had another excellent year, been drafted higher, and had more time to develop. We probably would've won the Big 12.

Thing is, I don’t think he actually would’ve gotten any better if he stayed at Texas. I don’t think he would’ve improved his draft stock. So then it begs the question. How badly did he want to just gtfo? After a certain point, it’s almost addition by subtraction if guys that don’t want to be here decide to leave. The same can be said about LJH, and Kris Boyd

Fell down the stairs, BEFORE signing his deal with Baltimore.  He never got his rookie contract.

Kris Boyd stayed for his senior year, was all conference in a passing league, and was rewarded with a 6th or 7th round pick.

How did staying help him?

Not sure he should've been all conference.  He got lit up often.  Malik, Deshon, Williams all probably could've helped their draft stock by returning.

I didn’t mean Boyd. I meant Elliot (i think). Essentially anyone that decides to leave early and either gets drafted late or not at all. Makes you wonder how badly they wanted to leave during the season. If you already have one foot out the door and you don’t want to be here, I feel like we’ve recruited well enough to let them go. If you want to leave, I wish you the best and hope you have a successful Nfl career because that looks good for Texas, but I don’t want you here if you have one foot out the door mentally. That was my main point.

Work ethic. Becoming a better player. Staying power in the league because he knows he's gotta keep on working for it.

He was great in coverage, but just got beat from time to time by awesome recievers in the big12. The "awesome" SECSECSEC recievers got shut down by him so it's no joke he can play.

But thats not unique to UT.

Addition by subtraction to lose the one of the Big 12's defensive players of the year?

If a guy doesn’t want to be here, we’ve recruited well enough that someone will step up. Jefferson was good, but he was told that he’d be a 2nd or 3rd round pick, and he was picked in the 3rd, was he not? Some guys play college football with the sole intention of making it to the NFL. He didn’t want to be here. Him leaving allows new leaders to step up, and the beat goes on.

Plus, I liked Jefferson, but he was a tiny bit overrated. He has a nice highlight tape, but he lacked consistency, IMO. Doesn’t matter, still wish him the best. Just my opinion.

This is not a binary choice. It's possible for person to  want to be here, but have other factors forcing him to leave. You guys take this shit to the extreme. If a player leaves it doesn't automatically make him a malcontent or someone who would poison the room if he stayed.

bullshit.  malik hated his teammates and the university and austin and wanted the fuck out of here so he bailed.  no two ways about it.

Malik never seemed to adjust to the whole contact part of playing linebacker.

His sophomore year he was shit, but his junior year he was better due to lightning Johnson joining the squad. His aversion to contact never seemed to be a good mix with wanting to play LB in the NFL.
