Not better than the original, but very good

Also not better, but Weezer just had their first billboard hit in over a decade with this song.

They also did this one:

They're talented for sure, but I've never liked Evanescence.

Maybe my reading comprehension is broke. Are you saying every Willie cover is better than Willie doing it originally? Because that's what I read.

I'm saying that I couldn't think of a song Willie covered where I didn't like his version better. Although admittedly I didn't think too hard about it.

Written by Cat Stevens. The original is by P P Arnold released May 1967.  Stevens' version was released six months later.

P.P. recently released her new solo album which is almost fifty years old. https://www.theguardian.com/music/2017/nov/02/the-unlikely-return-of-pp-arnold-i-put-myself-in-gods-hands

Are you fucking with us?

On which account?

Johnny Cash fucking buries Sting.  That's not even a debate.

Dwight absolutely slays Dim Lights, Thick Smokes.

And I don't think his Purple Rain cover is better, but it's really fucking good and deserves the recognition.

This is probably sacrilege for some, but I never liked Velvet Underground anway.  Plus, Bowie & Charlie Sexton.  And what appears to be Peter Frampton, relegated to the shadows (and I think it pissed him off).

As much as I love me some Bowie, these two outdo both.

Strangely, it seems that song fits 'shine better than meth.

I won't call this better than the Beach Boys (itself essentially a cover), but tis damn good.

Dwight is a master of "rework" and chooses his material very well, as indicated elsewhere on the thread.  Funny what the best glottal stop in 50 years can do for other genres of music.

Nah, just giving you a hard time on that Purple Rain, which neuters the bejeezus out of it. Dwight kills Suspicious Minds, everything else is just good fun.

I was really hoping you were an ardent fan of Sting's version of "Hung My Head".

I don't think Dwight neuters it at all.  Just takes it to a different place.  The original is so epic and bombastic, that I think the lilting, smaller version is a cool counter take.

Since this has become the “pretty good covers” thread, here’s a really cool one-man cover of Purple Rain using a unique instrument and a looper. Stick with it, it’s worth it for the solo.

He crushed it. Also, Petrucci's Purple Rain (in case it hasn't already been discussed ad nauseam. I forget which boards did what.).

Edit: Aqui

Man, I get it, opinions are like assholes, we all have them . . . in my opinion, that just sucks complete 100% USDA Grade A ass.  That is fucking awful.

His tone is just disgusting.  Horrible.  It doesn't sound like there's an amp in the same zip code, much less a vacuum tube.  The effects sound like Eric Johnson took a Viagra and fucked Tom Sholz for over 4 hours.

The playing is all sizzle without steak.  No soul, whatsoever.

And let's be clear, I cannot play like that, not in this lifetime, not in any future lifetimes.  I'd love to have that skill.  I'd KILL to have that skill.  But I sure as hell wouldn't use it like that.  Yikes.

OK, sorry.  + rep

So I was thinking about the zillion Willie covers...which ones do you guys think were NOT better than the original?

I have a couple.  There is a recording of Gary P Nunn doing Last Thing I Needed First Thing This Morning that is at least as good as Willie's cover. Can't find that version on the intertrons.

And of course, Patsy Cline doing a cover of Crazy was better than Willie's original.

Its a short list, though.  Willie is pretty spectacular.
