Cabo advice?

Saint Austin

Recommended Posts

It's been a few years since my last trip to Cabo, but my biggest piece of advice is simple, don't be a pendejo. Get margaritas at Monkey Business, eat at The Office, dance with hot women at Squid Roe, go to Cabo Wabo for a few drinks. You don't bring pesos to Mexico, you exchange your cash when you get there. Most places take our cash, but the exchange rate is better for you in pesos. Keep your buddies close and watch each other's back, you shouldn't have any issues, but drunk Americans can be targets. Eat plenty of fish tacos and other seafood. Be courteous. Don't buy "Cuban" cigars on the beach, or weed or coke. Don't drink any water that is not bottled. Bring immodium, aleve, and hydrate. That's all i got, have a great time.

Don't expect it to be white sand beaches with gentle waves like I did, it's pretty much a crazy party town with good weather, food, and golf

and just know it's a pretty good hike from airport to actual Cabo.

And great sport fishing.

Cabo isn't my cup of tea.  There's way too much Americanization (that a word?) for my tastes.  If it has a mall and fast food and is over priced then it's not a place I want to be.  However, I can see the appeal for some and particularly for fishermen or for something like a bachelor party.

Posted something over at the old site when we were considering Cabo for a bachelor party. We are going in August, but I cannot decide where the best place to stay would be.

With this group I'd immediately pick the ME Cabo, but it doesn't appear that it's all-inclusive, which would collectively save the group $10,000 USD in alcohol consumption.

Looking for fun atmosphere, all-inclusive, and close to the town/hotel district. Any recommendations?

Lets start with the good.  The fishing there is better than anywhere in Mexico.  Marlin, Dorado, Tuna, Wahoo all are almost a given.  The bad is most beaches are not swimmable.  Make sure your beach is swimmable. Definetely don't swim or even walk near the water at night.  Waves and tides close in fast.

I like Edith's and Los Tres Gallos for restaurants.  Pedregal is a cool dinner experience too, but one you want to do with a chick.

I always use Gaviotas fleet for fishing.  It is cheaper than most because their boats are a little more dated, but they have always put me on fish and work hard.

We just got back from 6 nights down there.  The weather was as perfect as could be.  I can't add too much to this thread because this is our "chill" vacation, with as little planned activity as possible.  But, I do recommend The Office (pretty much the perfect fun, party restaurant on the beach), Restaurant Maria Jimenez (charming, wonderfully prepared traditional Mexican food and great service) and drinks/dancing at No-name bar on the marina.  Lots of pretty things to look at for you guys that are into that sorta thing.

We did 3 nights at a house rented with friends up the hill in Pedregal and 3 nights at Secrets Puerto Los Cabos (AI with no kids).  Pretty good combination.  In Cabo we did the nightlife, heard all the music and the party scene.  Secrets is absolutely secluded.  Played volleyball and all that, but we didn't leave the resort. It was magnificent.

Don’t let the pacific side waves even touch your feet. My girlfriend and I were swept out by a rogue wave and nearly died. I’m not exaggerating at all. Took everything we had to make it back to shore. Having a damn well near panic attack typing this. You think you know the wave cycle then boom one comes in 12-18 inches higher and you’re a goner. Have fun but stay the fuck away from the water on the pacific side beaches wow.

Fishing is legit. Hooked a marlin but lost it and caught 8-10 dorado on a half day trip.

Glad someone mentioned Edith’s. I haven’t been to Cabo in years but this is my favorite place to hit up.

I'll second this.  Definitely find Monkey Business.  It's this tiny bar in a little enclave of shitty t-shirt shops/souvenirs.  The dude makes the best margaritas I've ever had.

Was there last week.  Stayed half time in a resort and the other in town to swim at the local beaches and be on the marina.  Hit up usual spots including Ediths, which still hold up well.  The days were relaxing and fishing plentiful.   This time around we determined to venutre a few blocks into local territory to eat more casual spots.  Cabo is a seafood town but i've had no better prepared ceviche, for the price, than at Baracruda.  Portions were also large.  Also, if you want to take your girl or fam to a really nice meal, more intimate setting of fine dining, i highly recommend Garambullo.  Its next door to Baracruda.  Manuel wearing a flat billed Boston Red Sox cap is one of the owners.  He's a former head chef at one of the resorts.  Great food and paid $ 35 for what i normally would pay about $100 at other big named places.   We wanted Churros for dessert and instead of steering us toward his menu he tipped us off to walk a block north of there to Calle Ma. Morelos to try a street vendor, Mr. Churro, he said he frequents.  He also recommended the fried plantains there.  Another option for a quick and casual yet tasty lunch is Taqueria El Paisa, off of Lazaro Cardenas.  Their salsas and  meats are quite good.   Lastly, i'd be remiss if i didnt mention Infusion Art Caffee.  Its a 5 minute taxi ride away from the marina but totally worth it.  Its frequented by expats and local hipsters but the coffee and food are fresh/excellent.  She liked it so much we ate there multiple times.  Everything we had there was good, no doubt your lady friend will love it.

Here is my recommendation for Cabo:  be rich

That ain't no shit. Went down last weekend with free flights and lodging and still managed to drop a grand between Friday & Sunday.

Bachelor party in 3 weeks.

What do you figure it'd run someone to get a dancer on a fishing boat for 5 hours?  Asking for all of my friends.

Any fishing charter recommendations? Probably will need 2 boats w/ room for 8 each.

Considering going for a wedding in late November. Only other time I’ve been to Cabo was for a bachelor party where we blew it out and rented a mansion with full staff near the One and Only. We went in the water a little bit but I remember it being fucking fierce and nothing I want my kids in (5 and 3).

Any of the high end hotels have swimmable beaches safe for kids? The wedding shit is all gonna be at the Riu Palace, and while considered a ****, didn’t quite live up to my standards just by online reviews.

Pacific side is death. Lots of good swimming on the Cortez side, but it might be a little tough for the 5yr old. Keep the 3 at the kiddie pool.

Let me reiterate if it seemed hyperbole — you can die on the beaches on the pacific side. I almost did. Definitely not the beaches for kids.

The people sounding the warning about Sunset Beach (Pacific Side)are not joking.  It is extremely dangerous just to walk near the surf.

https://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/naperville-sun/ct-nvs-beach-danger-los-cabos-st-1027-20171026-story.html

If you want to walk in the surf while in Cabo, go to Medano Beach (Sea of Cortez side)  It's perfectly safe to swim there.

Who goes to Cabo for ocean swimming/beaches?

My in-laws just recently took a trip down there and stayed in the new JW Marriott Resort their pictures were amazing.

Girl on boat for a day without a local hookup before you get down there is gonna be 1k easy.

We stayed at the JW last year and it was great. Did a private boat charter for $800 for the day and it was more than worth the price. As we pulled out of the marina and saw the tourist boats full with people we knew we made the right decision.

Golfed at Puerto Los Cabos, it was all inclusive golf which made for 2 great rounds.

If you want to get off the beach we went to dinner at Flora Farms one night and the experience was top notch.

You get better exchange rates using an ATM.   What I do when I travel is go straight to a bank ATM at the airport and get the maximum allowed by either the bank who owns the ATM or my bank and with my travels I use Charles Schwab account I have set up exclusively for travel purposes so my everyday bank account won't be screwed with. Stay away from the stand alone ATMs you might find on streets that do not identify with recognized bank brand which in Mexico would be Banamex, Scotiabank, BBVA , Bananorte.  In fact some of those banks have alliances with American based banks like BOA and Citi for fee waivers , but you have to use one of their ATM's.  Charles Schwab refunds all fees at the end of the month on domestic or international ATM's and you can use any ATM.   It's very easy to set up travel alerts with them on their website for which I always set it up to make it appear I'm out of town for a longer period just in case of delays or just wanting to stay at our vacation spot a little longer.

In Mexico (and probably so in most countries) , I always try to use Pesos because the merchants at the mom and pop shops who  like to bargain  will do so more with Pesos vs USD because it cost them money to convert USD to Peso for bank deposit purposes .   Plus with the exchange rate from 18 to 19 pesos to 1 USD, you are getting more bang for your buck when you use Peso and even more when you are getting them straight from an ATM vs a Cambio.   Take USD for back up purposes, but don't load up your wallet with them.   I'll use my credit card for hotel expenses,  tours or other excursions (if I can't book before I leave) and higher end dining establishments, but even at those places I'll use it sparingly.

Nobody goes for swimming but the pacific side beaches are unmatched for beauty...

and they are completely deadly. I would highly recommend a sunset on the beach if you’ve got a lady friend with you but yeah fucking stay way the fuck back at a safe distance - don’t let an 1/8 inch of water touch you it means you’re close enough for a rogue wave to sweep you out in 15 seconds. We are lucky to be alive and I’ll keep sounding the warning on this thread anytime it gets bumped.

Bumping this thread for recommendations.

Thinking about making a five day trip down there.    I get Cabo is where alot of the fun stuff is at.  But what about  San Jose del Cabo?

AI is not really a requirement as my wife (no pics) and I like to try different landmark places and street foods whenever we go down to Mexico.

We leave on the 2nd of July for a week.  Group trip with two other families.  Staying at the Pueblo Bonito Sunset resort for a little golf & R&R.  I'd like to charter a boat one trip.  Anyone done this recently and/or with pre-teen aged kids?  Worth it?

San Jose is super quiet with a lot of art galleries, and not much to do at night. There's a hole in the wall taco place called Hangman Taco (forget the Spanish translation) that is solid and even popular with locals. El Herradero is good too - they have those massive volcano bowls.

Cabo San Lucas can be a shitshow but you'll have fun loading up on vics and cialis and hitting up Mango Deck. There's a seafood place called Mariscos Mazatlan that is legit.

El Farallon for dinner one night. Great food and sweet location against the ocean with potential for big waves very close.

Fish for sure. Catching a Marlin is a lot of fun and it’s catch and release which is a win/win. To scratch that off my bucket list after only one fishing trip in Cabo was pretty sweet too. They are everywhere down there.

Dive if you can. There is a great shallow dive near the main beach area where you can see thousands, literally, of stingrays and maybe a Manta Ray if you’re lucky. Saw my first shark on this dive. It was a small nurse shark but still cool.
