I don't disagree with the message.  I'm not going to go out of my way to protect those who refuse to get vaccinated.

To me there is only one question.  Is it costing taxpayers more to have the anti-vaxxers die than to have the anti-vaxxers take the vaccine? I'd like to see the documentation on the cost benefit, because in the long term if it is cheaper to have these folks die, then not sure what the problem is.

Funny how the same people who yelled last summer about “shutting down the economy” and about how people would die as a result of the isolation and grandma should die for the economy are fine with ignoring the effects of keeping the pandemic raging.

how could it possibly be? they're clogging up medical resources and the vaccine costs about $35/shot. it's pretty far from even

Well, we might be able to solve some Social Security solvency issues this way.

I don't disagree but none of that was in that video.  I'm responding to the video, most of which is quoted in the tweet.  Which is...I don't disagree with what Doocy is saying.  He chose to get vaccinated.  Others chose not to.  Choices have consequences and we can't continue to protect those who made a poor choice.  Nor do most of them want us to.

I'd argue that it is the government's job to at least attempt to provide the best information possible to its citizens to aid them in their decisions. Or, at the very least, not purposely poison the well with lies and falsehoods--at the direct expense of real human lives--for blue vs. red politics.

As you mentioned earlier though, at least the state governments are doing a little better at staying on message and being honest about the vaccine. Unfortunately, the carnival barkers get the most air time.

The consequences of their choices should include not being able to fly between states.  Interstate travel clearly falls within the federal government's ambit, and they should require proof of vaccination for those over 12 to get on a plane.  People are still free to make choices, but those choices have consequences, such as being stuck in Mississippi.

It's no more worse than the flu even though it's 2 to 3 times more deadly and can bring along MIS-C with it.

Given the low risk of Covid to children, why not wait for more data to get my child vaccinated?
While children are less likely to develop severe illness from Covid-19, they are still at risk. Nearly four million children in the United States have tested positive for the virus since the start of the pandemic, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, and more than 300 have died. This past winter, doctors reported growing numbers of patients with Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children, or MIS-C, a condition linked to Covid which can affect multiple organs, including the heart.

Dr. Megan Ranney, an emergency room physician and professor at Brown University in Providence, R.I., said she had “zero safety concerns” about the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, noting that hundreds of millions of people worldwide had received it. Her 12-year-old daughter will get vaccinated, and her 9-year-old son will be immunized when he’s eligible, she said.

“The risk of your child catching Covid and getting really sick is low, but it’s not zero,” said Dr. Ranney. “And the risk of them getting sick or hospitalized or worse with Covid or with the post-Covid multi-inflammatory syndrome is higher than the risk of something bad from this vaccine.”

Currently about 24 percent of the Covid cases in the United States are in young children, said Dr. Offit. He notes that more American children have died from Covid during the pandemic than die annually from other illnesses for which children are regularly vaccinated. About 75 to 150 children in the United States die of flu each year, he said, and about 100 children die of chickenpox.

“If I had to convince a parent, I would bring them into the hospital with me and let them round on our Covid ward to see what this disease looks like,” said Dr. Offit. “There’s every reason to get them vaccinated. If I had a 12- to 15-year-old, I would vaccinate them in a minute.”

As Mac pointed out, I'm wondering if lots of these folks are "on the dole" anyway and their future benefits might be more costly than the medical resources.

Checked in on my favorite MO county, Carter,  from the vid I previously posted. They were against masks and vaccines; 28% of adults vaccinated. And they were doing ok. Past tense not now. It's a small county of 6-7K people. Sadly they're exploding with new cases lately. Something tells me that most are not even adjusting their life even though their neighbors are sick. I don't see how COVID is going to do anything but hasten the decline of small town America.

When someone states that they/their kid shouldn't get the vaccine because odds are they won't get too sick and/or die, they're basically saying what selfish assholes they are. Some of these people are not even vaccine deniers, they just want everyone else to get the vaccine to spare them.

Post 2: To support the previous comments about red/blue states having different vaccination rates, here is a chart that looks at the county level in terms of red or blue. What's telling is that the gap between the two is growing at each data point.

This cavalier attitude of "go ahead, let your kid under 12 get Covid and they'll be fine" pisses me right the fuck off. Serious illness in kids from it is rare but kids do and WILL die unnecessarily from this -- and more so than from the flu, as pointed out above. Kids' schooling and lives will continue to be disrupted in large part because older people refuse the shot.

https://www.statista.com/statistics/1127698/influenza-us-deaths-by-age-group/

This site says 477 deaths for flu in 2018-2019, most of them aged 0-4. In any case, the numbers are minuscule. Going on tv and screaming about how the kids are in danger is largely false.

If that analyst or whoever wanted to save more kids’ lives he’d go on TV and scream about the importance of your kids getting swimming lessons and safety around water.

Sounds like socialism to me, no thanks. Kids need to work hard and learn to swim on their own instead of always asking for assistance.

Unvaccinated kids create danger for others. That's the point for them, and basically everyone to get vaccinated.

We can teach our kids to swim.  We can't teach our kids how to avoid getting.

These doctors seem to disagree with someone in this thread.  Perhaps he can write them and compare bona fides.

The American Academy of Pediatrics released new Covid-19 guidance for schools on Monday that supports in-person learning and, among other things, recommends universal masking in school of everyone over the age of 2.

“The AAP believes that, at this point in the pandemic, given what we know about low rates of in-school transmission when proper prevention measures are used, together with the availability of effective vaccines for those age 12 years and up, that the benefits of in-person school outweigh the risks in all circumstances,” the guidance says.

One of the main interventions put forward by the AAP includes that all students over the age of 2 and all school staff should wear masks at school unless they have a medical or developmental condition that prohibits this.

Reasons for this recommendation include, but are not limited to: a significant proportion of the student population not yet being eligible for vaccination; masking protecting those who are not vaccinated against Covid-19 and reducing transmission; and potential difficulty in monitoring or enforcing mask policies for those who are not vaccinated.

So vaccinate kids with a novel vaccine under emergency use authorization for a disease that rarely causes them serious harm, that they don’t spread as much as adults, to protect adults. That is a truly warped, selfish view.

Tell me you don’t have kids, without telling me you don’t have kids.

Makes me ragey.  So some other person on the lung transplant waiting list may die because this dick couldn't be bothered to do the smart thing?  Fuck him.

I agree.  And lung transplants aren't any great answer either.  The survival rate on those is nowhere like it is with other organs.   I know, my friend the paramedic in ATL is a longhauler and her doctors are beginning to discuss putting her on the list.  Most transplantees average life expectancy of 5 years from what I read, and the percentage of rejections is higher than with other organs.

She didn't have the luxury of a vaccine when she caught it, and since then has been in and out of the hospital and rehab 5 times.  Each time up until this one they would clear her for duty, and she would work 2-3 weeks, get worn down and catch another case of bronchitis which would develop into pneumonia, or dbl pneumonia.   This last round had her coughing so much she herniated a disc in her back.    Now she's back home two weeks, they send a nurse 3 times a week.  She sleeps most days.  we exchange a few texts, because talking wears her out.   And its a daily strain financially, on top of the depression and anxiety that goes with it.    She's finally on disability, and with the CTC starting to help, I think she can keep a roof over her head and not have her car repoed.  Slowly she is working towards getting her cert for medical data entry from home.

So fuck anyone and their dumbass arguments about not getting vaccinated.  Yesterday was her 38th birthday.  Her four kids could be orphans by this time next year.

If anyone sees anything about support or retraining programs for long haulers, please let me know.   This is going to be a long long issue we will deal with as a country going forward, with a lot of variables.  Thanks.

Back into double digit admits here in one central Austin hospital. Unsure how many would be ICU-level, but it's more than two for sure. And it's not like the ones who are on the floor are breathing without oxygen, ya know? I imagine those that are critical weren't vaccinated, but I also don't know that for sure. I don't have any information on age ranges. It was a busy Friday night and I didn't get around to visit my sisters in the MICU.

If you haven't been vaccinated for any other reason than you are immuno-compromised or a pre-teen, I am begging you: please get vaccinated as soon as possible. Austin was spared the worst when we didn't have a proven method to prevent and minimize the virus, and what we dealt with was still really fucking shitty. To add to that, nurse/staff morale is lower now than probably at any point prior during the pandemic. Yes, we've gotten protecting ourselves down pat. Yes, there is less of a supply PPE problem. Yes, we know what treatments help with COVID and when to utilize them. We know how to maximize your chances at coming off of the ventilator. I hope you know that that probably means you end up with a tracheostomy and without the ability to speak. But there's a really easy, safe, and effective way to almost certainly prevent this from happening:

GET VACCINATED

We are running out of energy to care. You have the ability to stop this from happening. Please do the right thing.

We have continued to hemorrhage staff throughout the hospital, but especially from our ICUs. I don't use that word lightly You can make >$60/hr in Houston as a critical care nurse—hell, you can make $60/hr as a "floor" nurse in Houston—but you're stuck at around $34/hr in Austin, and that includes weekend, night shift, and critical care differential pay. People can't afford to live and progress in their lives here, so they will only stay so long. Why deal with all of that plus COVID? I can't speak for any other unit in my hospital, but I can say with certainty that the average number of years worked per nurse in my ICU is the lowest it's ever been in my more than five years here. Your odds of having an overworked, underexperienced nurse as your caregiver during a critical illness is the highest it's ever been.

Just get the shot and deal with potentially feeling like shit for a day or so. It's def a lot better than breathing through a hole in your neck, if you make it that far.

Again, fuck anyone who argues against vaccination.  I don't give a damn if they die, but they better not clog up and wear down our healthcare system that also treats those who did give enough shit about humanity to try to protect everyone.

Maybe if everyone was positive and agreed that getting vaccinated was a good thing, then all demos would have better numbers?   But no, the R's keep putting out disinformation which will trickle down one way or another into all those demos.

That data, of course, does not exist. If you're looking for 100% safety before you step outside again I don't know what to tell you.  Obviously you've had a personal experience that has shaped your risk tolerance and I'm sorry your friend is dealing with such a shitshow.  But if you're vaxxed, go on with your life and bask in the glow of American exceptionalism and science.

99.7% of all new cases are amongst the unvaccinated.  The market vomited all over itself because of the fear of lockdowns due to the unvaxxed.  I've got a lot of scorn for those folks, although I do not wish them harm.

Anecdotally, I wonder how many people are lying about their vaccination status?  Because I know three people who have had breakthrough cases personally.  That seems high to me.  One is feeling pretty bad but no need to be hospitalized, the other two had Minor symptoms.

The stupidity coursing through this country’s veins is just too much.  Too bad dialysis doesn’t clean out stupid.

If Fox is looking for a way to get on the vaccine side of things without having to eat crow, I'm totally fine with them telling everyone Delta variant is way worse, we were right about the original one, but now you really should get a shot.  Don't really care if they do some touchdown dance.  Let's just all get on the side of shots.

It doesn't. I know people that are fully vaxxed who have had breakthrough cases.

The vaccine does not prevent you from getting the virus.  It's not a forcefield.  If you come in contact with the virus, you can still catch the virus just as easily as you could last year (moreso, actually, if the Delta reports are to be believed).  The vaccine just prevents the virus from kicking your ass.

This is by no means a shot at you, I know you are not saying this.  But I'm just getting annoyed at the general ignorance (emphasized by countless media reports of "he's vaccinated and tested positive?!?!?") of what the purpose of a vaccine is.

Our government's mushmouthed approach to the truth is infuriating.  Just stop dancing around the issue.

What lay people kinda know is that the vaccine helps reduce or nearly eliminate severe illness, hospitalization, and death.  What is not commonly known is how well the vaccine protects against CATCHING the virus in the first place.  There are probably data out there, but the average Joe doesn't read JAMA, etc.

A direct quote from CDC:

COVID-19 vaccines are effective at keeping you from getting COVID-19, especially severe illness and death. COVID-19 vaccines reduce the risk of people spreading the virus that causes COVID-19.

What exactly does that mean?  What % of fully vaccinated Americans catch covid compared to unvaccinated Americans?  How fucking hard is this?  The messaging failures are infuriating.  The truth is always the best approach.

FWIW, Vinay is a good follow imo.  He has been pretty consistent in his views.  I don't agree with all of them, but he has a good number of hits to go with misses, and there is a logical consistency in them, imo.  He also is not a one trick COVID twatter, and touches on a number of other areas of high interest (at least to me). He is worth a follow. At least if you are able to tolerate someone that is going to make some arguments that you may not agree with from time to time, but he is generally pretty good about bringing data and receipts to back up his views.

Anyways, I think that asking kids to wear masks in institutional settings was reasonable and appropriate last school year. Undecided at this point on what the right in-school measures are going to be for the next academic year. Aug case counts in ATX area will help me land somewhere.
