The one I passed on was in pretty good shape, 60k miles, and tasteful updates.  We all make bad choices from time to time, that was one of mine

I’d rather restomod an old one.

One of my high school buddies had a Grand Wagoner he inherited from  his dad. Dark Blue with the "woodie" stripe. We drove up from Port Arthur to Austin for Spring Break one year and had to stop and fill it up twice each way. You could floor it and watch the speedo and the gas gauge go opposite directions.

I was supposed to inherit one as my first car.  Then a few months before I turned 16 it died, so I got a Mustang instead that almost killed me.

Got an email from Cadillac on ordering a Blackwing, another new vehicle I’m intrigued by. I’ve been playing with options setups. It’s not going to pull the boat, but I wouldn’t mind something other than a truck some days.

I’m about 90% committed on the idea of unloading my GT350 for the CT5 V Blackwing. It’s probably going to be impossible to get a test drive, but I’ve driven enough GM product to know what I’m getting with this thing.  Not sure what else could really scratch the manual itch like this monster while still being daily drivable. It will have the added benefit of being less of a pain in the ass to get kids in and out of.

Seems like a no brainer to me. Do it.

The CT5 is a nice car, broadly speaking, pretty well done in all respects.  Compares favorably with the 5-series and E-class, and the blackwing blows the doors off the M and AMG at a substantial discount. I think you'll like it.

I had a ‘16 SS and loved that thing other than the fact that I settled for an auto instead of holding out for a manual.  Not making that mistake again.

So how is it?

Completely different than the 991 so far. The 991 is loud (it does have an exhaust), it’s bumpy, it rattles, makes noises, shifts kinda hard. Basically, it feels like a race car.

I might feel differently when I get the 992 on the track but so far, everything about it is much more refined.  Its almost too nice (I may feel differently after the newness wears off). It’s not that loud (I will fix this), it shifts smoothly, it’s not that bumpy…it basically feels like a Carrera S with more power and better grip.  Even though it’s bigger than the 991, it doesn’t feel it but it does feel lighter.

It’s still in the break in period so I can’t step on it yet but you can feel a huge difference in grip and responsiveness and bite of the front end. I have a feeling the understeer issue of the 991 is now fixed.

As far as the fit and finish, it is much, much nicer than the 991.  It has all the technology, looks and feel of a luxury car.  Then again, my 991 is pretty “base” and this one has just about every option you can put on one.

For my build, I wouldn’t change a thing.  The black metallic almost has a deep blue hue to it and looks awesome, IMO.  It sitting next to my wife’s (no pics) jet black 991 looks completely different.   Interior with the lights, stitching, etc is perfect for my tastes. The seats have good road feel but are still comfortable.  The steering wheel moves a little too easy but you can still really feel the car grip.

All that said, I love it so far but, unfortunately, manufacturers seem to be forced to move further and further from raw sport cars in order to remain competitive. This is another step in that direction and a much bigger step than from the 997 to 991.  That being the case, the 991 and all it’s obnoxiousness isn’t going anywhere (even though it looks very dated next to the 992).

For now, I guess you could say the 991 is the stripper/porn star you want to bang for the weekend and the 992 is the one you want to marry but I reserve the right to change my mind after taking it on the track. I have a feeling she is a lady on the streets and a freak in the sheets.

There is rumor the Corolla Hatch is getting a hotted up GR version with the same/similar motor. And the rumor says 30k. I wasn't able to swing the money for a GR Yaris for Thailand (~$72k Thai price, and the 10-car allotment sold out instantly anyways), but if the US gets that GR Hatch I'll likely grab one.

It was 28F here in Pittsburgh today. A buddy asked me if I could give him a ride to the local BMW dealership so he could pick up his brand new M8 Competition. It is GORGEOUS! Black, with a tan interior. I picked him up in the 911, top down of course. He said, "it's 27 degrees, can't we just put up the top?". I said, "no, you can go back inside and get a hat".

I'm not even a BMW guy, I've always told my German cousins that I view the Bavarians as a bit too whimsical for me but, the car is stunning. It's a 2022.

I haven’t had a new car in a long time - not a big gearhead myself.  But I’m getting the new Bronco in a few days and I’m really fucking excited. Total nostalgia buy having driven an 89 Bronco in high school but man it’s gonna be a fun ride.

I hate this new car market. Apparently I’d be looking at this time next year for a CT5 Blackwing.  They tried to downsell me on a CT4 Blackwing which at least had a manual, but I’m not voluntarily passing on 200 hp and it was small, like tighter than my old SS or an M3.

Yeah, I don't mind smaller, I drive an ATS.  But in the CT4, while passably roomy up front (and with no back seat like a lot of cars that size), I had the back of the front seat behind the B pillar.  I had to climb out around it.  No bueno.

I don't think the ATS sedan was like that, but I have a coupe.  The CT4 would make a nice coupe.

Incidentally, Sewell in Dallas purports to have four CT5-V Blackwings.

Didn't look, but probably all AT.

A Chevy SS? My SS is a boat. I'd have to think the CT5 will be smaller as well, right?

But yeah the CT4 would definitely be too small for me.

Sewell’s are all special order cars.  Same group as Batchelor in SA and they’re all not actually available.  They had one CT4 in that matte green and it was pretty sweet, but not for me.

CT5 felt bigger to me, I sat in a regular one and liked it.  My oldest are growing 13 and 15 year old boys and there’s honestly not much more legroom in the back of the CT4 than my Shelby.

BTW, my wife would 100% curb at least one of those wheels.  She's gotten 2 on my S6.  Driving a big ass SUV makes her not worry about curbs, I guess, although she managed to royally fuck up one of the rims on her old QX80.  Landcruiser rims are unscathed so far...

It's odd.  The car gets compared to the 3-series and C-class, but as far as "felt" interior room and exterior dimensions, it seems much more comparable to a 5-series or E-class.

And yeah, the back seat in a CT4 is sufficiently useless, like many small sedans, that you might as well go for the coupe if they have one.

Last year I was at in-laws in Garland for Christmas, or maybe Thanksgiving.  We were driving home that night and stopped at a light and I was in a bit of a food coma, but felt the car pull a little to the right, like big crown in the pavement, as we stopped.

When I started up, I rolled over some hard object a rock or some shit and it fucked up my wheels, and even got the back a little bit.

Some time later, I looked at the intersection and it had one of those completely fucked up storm drains that has a deep recess and slopes down.  Like this, but the angles on the ends are more acute:

drain.jpg

Complete wheel manglers.  I was so fucking pissed.  I'm getting mad just thinking about it.
