Disney CEO: Let’s spend a fuckton on content and buy Fox to add stuff to Disney+ and Hulu.  And let’s keep it up so that people don’t even have a second thought about re-upping

Discovery CEO:  let’s cut content production and remove content that already exists on the service.  I’m saving money so where’s my bonus?

U-verse also includes it on some of their tiers of internet service, which is how I've been getting HBO for the last couple years. Pretty nice, net neutrality concerns aside lol

Yep that's how I have it. Didn't think it was a big deal when we got it as a bonus but now I watch it more than any other streaming app

Ayup. Discovery CEO made $250mil+ last year dumping content and cutting jobs. Now he gets to do it all over again to somebody else's baby. Greed is good God.

HBO = channel(s) on your cable package.
HBO Max = self-contained, isolated application for watching HBO, Max, and TCM content paid for through a direct subscription.
If you subscribe to a cable package that includes HBO, that also gives you access to HBO Max without having to pay more.

I get the consumer access side of things. I’m more curious about the content production. Is there a distinction on that side?

Yes HBO Exclusives and Max Exclusives had different people in charge of content production. The HBO exclusives team is being retained and possibly expanded. So the good stuff that’s on or has been on the HBO channel

HBO Exclusives - things like Veep, Curb, Westworld, GOT, SV, Gemstones

Max Exclusives - things like Hacks, Peacemaker, Raised by Wolves

There better be a season 3 of Peacemaker, dammit!

So TimeWarner is going to kill the best content producer to save money. A content producer that exists solely to garner subscriptions? Why even buy it?

is this one of those weird private equity deals where a bank loans you an insane amount of money to “revive” a dead business (like ToysR Us) and your get crazy rich when it fails?  Am I missing something here?

And Max exclusives like “FuckBoy Island”.

Which is peak trash television but highly entertaining.

I hope it doesn’t get scrapped.

HBO and HBOMax had two separate content divisons? But why? That is some serious dumb administration

I think HBO is the old-guard TV production studio for the cable channel, and Max was the new kids on the block making stuff for exclusively the streaming service

I listened to the first 20mins of The Watch Pod and I feel better about the situation. I like Chris and Andys take.  Maybe it's just wish casting.

But be prepared to see Chip Gaines' goofy mug when you click on the HBO app.

Anyway it's worth 20minutes

Miami. prostitutes, credit card hustling, strippers, rap.  ( prolly still not everyone's tea)

I'd binge it, if all the epis were out.

Station Eleven was one of my favorite series of the last few years. HBO is reportedly making 2 of Emily St. John Mandel's other books - The Glass Hotel and Sea of Tranquilty - both of which are good reads for anyone interested, into their own limited series. I think all of these series fall under the HBO Max production side, but who really knows. Hoping these changes within HBO don't cause those series to get axed.

Anyone else's app being glitchy with the "Continue Watching" menu?

For the past couple of months, every episode I watch of a show ends up in my continue watching queue showing only like 3 or 4 minutes being watched on the time bar at the bottom.  Then it stays there instead of going away until the next weekly episode comes out.  So then when new episodes ultimately do come out, they don't show up in my queue, just the old episode it's pretending I didn't already finish.

Not the biggest issue in the world since I can always go to the show page and click on the new episode, but it's annoying.  Especially if a show goes on hiatus for a bit and I don't know exactly when it's coming back.

Well I figured something was going on when Magnolia Network announced it will be on HBO Max next month.  They are currently on the discovery+ app.

In 10 years there will probably only be 2 streaming apps left that capture everything....like where college football is headed.

Yes, and many other bugs. The app is horrible.

We’re rebingeing GoT. We’re on S6. You catch things you missed when streaming vs the old weekly wait in season then forever til the next one.

I've rebinged and re-rebinged a few times, and yes, it's amazing the things you catch with each subsequent viewing.

Upon my first re-watch, I discovered I'd completely forgotten--or failed to take notice at all--that Varys was scheming with Illyrio Mopatis from the very beginning to restore the throne to the Targaryens.  During the initial run I was surprised that Varys seemed to so suddenly be on board with putting Daenerys on the Iron Throne, but aha!, he'd always been planning that.

If anyone besides me was waiting for Licorice Pizza to debut on HBOmax, I was scrolling on Prime the other day and happened across it. Free on Prime. I hadn't heard any fanfare about it. It was just there and I have no idea how long it's been there because it's been awhile since i watched anything on that service. So fyi.

It was ok which is a big miss for PTA standards. I liked parts but just kind of hated the story and didn't get into the world he was presenting of LA, child actors, etc.  I had no idea what to think of it and didn't enjoy the male lead character or his arc. I think I liked the Haim girl and her family but that was it. The relationship between Haim and the young awkward boy was impossible to get invested in.

I'm sure I didn't get fully get it or missed some context as others really enjoyed it.

It wasn't a great film but I found it amusing. The child actor part - I'll tell you from experience that type of famous person was all over the place in certain areas of LA, and pretty much everyone knew someone, esp in Encino and Burbank near the studios. Many if not most were, for the most part, unremarkable as people. They maybe had a certain quality that got them a part, or they just had an in to the biz.

I don't think anybody thought Haim's character was some great beauty. The agent she interviewed with was doing her client a favor. And the older actor just wanted to fuck her. Her interest in the younger kid was he had some magnetism, money and she was hoping to find a way to comfortably exit her family situation. That was my impression anyway.

They’re siloed into separate divisions.

if you watched the evolution of the walt disney company, disney offshoot prodco’s (like hollywood pictures), disney animation, and pixar, you’d see this type of thing isn’t that unusual, it just happens slower.

the thought was that prestige shows would actually air on hbo (which theoretically has limited slots) and then there would be more room to house and showcase other projects on a streaming platform like hbomax (which could also provide a backup option for hbo library like on-demand did - remember hbogo?)

when att was gobbling everything up (time warner, directv) it made a lot of sense, because they were building and expanding. now that they’re selling off pieces and consolidating, it looks like a mess. which it probably always was.

the discussions of what would happen in 2019-2021 when netflix started losing catalogs has been ongoing, and have played a big part in the streaming wars. they can’t all survive on their own. netflix is already cratering.

worthy projects will find homes as long as those with deep pockets (amazon, apple, disney) still give a shit.

I just finished rewatching it as well.  Gotta get ready for House of Dragons.  I'm curious if I'm alone in this opinion.  Now that some time has passed and the wounds have healed, I didn't find the final season and the ending to be all that terrible.  It could have been better, but it didn't seem as terrible and rushed as it did the first time I watched it.

Sex Lives of College Girls, while the name makes its sound terrible or a half porn it’s neither.  I was really surprised at how good this show is actually.  It does a great job of building the characters and I don’t think they could have cast any of the roles better.  Yea it’s kinda a predictable fun college show but it’s a pretty funny and a fun watch, it’s filmed and acted much better than I expected.  It will definitely keep you entertained atleast.

Felt bad about watching the show at first, but it was great.  Season 2 starts next week I think.

Surprised this didn't get more attention and wonder if the title had anything to do with it.

Maybe this isn't news but I was flipping through HBO Max last night after watching the premiere of House of the Dragon and noticed that every season of Larry Sanders is on there now.

I just rewatched all six seasons of Larry Sanders and it’s such a masterpiece. Every episode a gem. Rip Torn and Shandling are impeccable, the ensemble is fantastic, and the real celebs are so great being in on the joke.
