From OU's "Portal Weekend"

4 "locks" have been tweeted and 4 commits.

More likely
DB CJ Coldon (Wyoming): 2nd team MWC, FWIW
DB Kani Walker (Louisville): Freshman in 2021; 1 tackle. ? recruited by Safeties coach Brandon Hall in high school
DL Jeffery Johnson (Tulane)
DB Trey Morrison (UNC): 4 yr starter at CB,S,NB at various points; tiny, 5-9; Venables may have known him some from the ACC (Clemson played UNC in 2019)

OT Tyler Guyton (TCU): Freshman OT who can reverse dunk a basketball but may not be able to block other large humans

QB Chubba Purdy (FSU): Didn't play at FSU, which had tremendous QB issues in 2020 and 2021. Brother made comically poor decisions in high leverage situations.

Less likely
TE Michael Trigg (USC): At Mississippi right now; mildly productive freshman yr; OU'll have playing time but he may follow Dart to Mississippi.
LB Drew Sanders (Bama): Hogs
DL Mekhi Wingo (Miz): Already said he's still going to visit SC; visited LSU too. OU still in it.
QB Jaxson Dart (USC): At Mississippi right now; makes sense he'd go there

Remaining needs
WR: 3     (0 taken)
OL: done?   (2 taken)
TE: 1     (1 taken)
QB: 1     (1 taken)

DL: done? (2 taken)
DB: done?     (3 taken)

Updated: OU adds OL transfer from TCU Tyler Guyton. Athletic OT propect from 2020 class. Light for OT. Will either get stronger and be an OT or be a blocking TE type.  OU's taken 8 portal guys (I'm not counting Ted Roof's son-LOL). Remaining needs include more guys to catch passes and probably throw passes.

Two more "locks" were tweeted this weekend. Those two locks could be Guyton + Gentry Williams, who reaffirmed his OU commitment, or two new commitments from visitors this weekend or some combination.

OU has 75 non-specialist scholarship players heading into 2022 as of right now. Anticipate 3-4 K/P/snappers, 2-4 Feb 2 signees, and that still leaves a couple of slots for Campbell-LOL, Conerly-also LOL, or more portal guys in Feb through May.

Apparently Kanak ran a 4.38 and benched 275 10 times on his initial testing.  Thats flying for 6'2" 220.

I am here for it, both for the annoying as fuck reverence that he'll be paid for it by announcers that can't help themselves with OU and also for the absurd tall tales he spawns from this board.

Funny thing is that OU's got another guy whose height, weight, and track numbers are almost the same as Kanak's, Jayden Rowe.

Kanak played Kansas 5A ball (~ 1000 student enrollment). On defense, he played the "just run to the ball" position. Rowe played CB at the highest level of Oklahoma high school ball (3500 student enrollment). I don't have any information on Rowe's strength numbers, but hopefully the ability to cover will translate as a college S, NB, or LB.

After you visit Rowe's 247 page you'll probably be able to guess why Kanak gets more press than Rowe. https://247sports.com/player/jayden-rowe-46112803

Hopefully OU's going to get two guys in the 2022 class who fail as badly as Teddy Lehman.

Jesus. I didn’t know Rowe was that fast. His offer list should be better. Kanak’s might be the best I’ve seen for not being a Rivals Top 250 kid

Just because you get moved down to play linebacker doesn’t mean you magically learn how to play the position well. For every Isaiah Simmons, there is a Tyler owens/Demarvion Overshown.

im sure Clemson has other failed Isaiah Simmons types we don’t know about too

Which is why I said what I said. They will be monsters if they can handle the position.

Sunshine from Drumm. He probably cried putting that Devon Campbell note in there:

Quote

*** Recruiting ***

*** Spoke with four-star DB commit Gentry Williamslast night after his second official visit to the Sooners. He got to take another since the staff changed and Oklahoma went from Lincoln Riley to Brent Venables.

Williams said that the visit was "awesome" and added, "it wasn't stale or the same like I thought it was going to be with me being there so many times," Williams said of his visit to OU.

Williams took the visit to get to know his new DB coach, Jay Valai, better before he talked about closing his recruiting down. GW told me that he spent a good amount of time with the Sooners' new CB coach, adding, "I was with Coach Valai the whole time and even ate with him every meal except on last night when I was with Coach Venables," GW told me. "We get along so well, too. He likes how analytical I am. Loves my mentality. So does Coach Venables. They say I am mature and handle things correctly. Want me to lead when I get there. I am excited about it all."

A source I spoke with about GW told me, "That kid has an elite mentality with how he approaches his day-to-day tasks and goals. He is going to work with (Coach Valai and Coach Venables) on a daily basis and do zoom training sessions to make sure he is full prepared for when he arrives in June. Expectations are high for him and Coach Schmidty has some things he is going to be doing on his own that will help GW significantly when he arrives."

"He has leadership qualities that can't be taught and (the OU staff) thinks he can use that to become quite the leader in Norman," The source told OUinsider about Gentry Williams.

GW says he too was even impressed with S&C Jerry Schmidt. Williams said that Schmidty was very upfront with him and very detail oriented, saying, "He was having me do stretches and was watching my hands and all. Said if I angle my hands a certain way it would help with this and that. Same with my shoulders. I was impressed because I never met an S&C that detailed," Williams noted about Schmidty. "He also told me that he heard about my knee issues. He then said that it looked fine functionally and that we aren't gonna worry about it until it gives us something to worry about. He said, 'No more talk of this ACL or knee. Back to running 4.3's and intercepting passes.' I loved it. That is the type of stuff I vibe with."

Williams will be making calls to other programs over the next day or so and you might see a announcement from him detailing his future soon, he says. I will add this, though: I expect OU to be GW's landing spot and it would be horribly shocking if anything else happened. Williams went as far as to say, "BV and Coach Valai are my guys. Those are the type of coaches I want to play with and they have this program being OU again. It got away from that swagger and accountability recently. Every player I know told me that things weren't the same with accountability or anything like that. Seems BV and his staff are bring that back. Why I think we win a national title while I am there. I can't wait, either."

Needless to say, Williams seems locked into the Sooners.

*** I know there is some talk about Devon Campbell and where things stand with OU. Well, I have long hinted that I am "not quite there yet" when it comes to me feeling like the Sooners have made a move that they would be considered the leader now.

My reasoning for "not quite being there" is that I just don't see OU being able to overcome some things within the family, among a few other things. Campbell has always had a strong feel for the Sooners, but there is a strong presence around him that is all UT and that presence has been the leader in helping/making the major decisions with Campbell. Add that he has always had a strong connection with UT offensive line coach Kyle Flood, and you have the beginning of a very difficult hill for Coach Bill Bedenbaugh and the Sooners to climb.

When you add in a few other things, I just have never felt OU could make that jump and still don't at this time. Look, I have been shocked before in recruiting and it wouldn't be the last time I would be surprised/shocked if DC chose the Sooners in the end. . This is one I know you all would love me to eat crow on, and I honestly would love to have that happen for you all after the 2021 class ended so roughly at OL.

I will add that this one is a lot different than those that Oklahoma lost on in 2021 with OU never really being the leader with Campbell to begin with. I write all this to say that I am heading to Dallas this weekend and I plan on staying after my family leaves to head back to Oklahoma. I will be sticking around to go by and see a few of the Sooners top targets and then may fly out from there to go to a 7v7 tournament in Florida or head down to Houston/Austin to make few stops before coming back to OKC.

Needless to say, I won't be going by to see Campbell unless things turn out quite different than the buzz I have heard over the last 24-48 hours. About as much as I can and am willing to dive into it.

*** Back to some good news for you all:

10381276.jpeg?fit=bounds&crop=620:320,offset-y0.50&width=620&height=320 QB Jackson Arnold (Photo: Tim Verghese, 247Sports)

2023 Allen (TX) five-star DL DJ Hicks visited the Sooners this past weekend after choosing to go to OU over the Texas JR Day. The buzz around Hicks and OU didn't stop with that after another sites Texas reporter put what we call a 'crystal ball' here at 247Sports in for OU on their site.

At the time, it was a shocking pick with Texas A&M having long been viewed as the leader for Hicks. However, the visit to OU this past weekend was the fourth or fifth for the five-star to OU and when you add what a high-level and well-connected SEC source told me about their thoughts on Hicks' recruitment, the buzz around him and the Sooners make a bit of sense with the source adding, "Hicks has been to Norman five times, I believe," the source told OUinsider. "He is a great kid and comes from an excellent family. You can tell that they view OU very highly with their actions. That is what I follow and when you visit a school the way they visit OU, even with the new staff, it's pretty telling to me that the Sooners are up there near the top with him. NSD is almost a year away, though. Time will be either a gift or curse for those that are viewed highly early on."

The source also noted and spoke and highly of the fact new Sooners DL coach Todd Bates has a stellar relationship with Hicks and his family that dates back to middle school, so the thought right now is that OU is very much in the picture for the five-star DL.

Now, I am sure you all want to know my take on this? Well, I still feel that A&M, Texas, OU, Bama and a few others will be vying for Hicks in the end. As of now, I don't believe he wants to decide until the Under Armor All American Game in January of 2023. At least tentatively.

My guess is that the Sooners will get an official visit from Hicks and that he will back to Norman a few times before things get narrowed down. Sources around Norman feel OU is in a prime spot for the five-star DL. With the momentum for 2023 four-star DB Peyton Bowen at all-time high, too, it seems the Sooners are pressing to get the DFW area back as one of the main resources for Oklahoma after not using it as much in the Riley tenure.

Could Hicks be one of the catalysts that make the DFW area an OU haven once again? A few huge steps were made with plenty more to go before it's all said and done with the five-star DL. Lots of work to do before December NSD for OU to be land a guy like DJ Hicks.

(NOTE: SEE STEVE WILTFONG'S ARTICLE ON HICKS HERE!!!)

*** 2023 four-star Oregon DL commit, Gracen Halton took his official visit to OU over the last weekend.

I spoke with his father a few days ago and what I got from that was more or less that the Sooners really made their mark with the four-star DL. Do I think OU is the leader now? I do. As I type this, Halton announced his decommitment from Oregon.

I can tell you that one thing that stood out to Halton and his family was that, "the coaches were all on the same page. Every coach you spoke with had the same speech and was very adamant about what they are selling as a program," Halton's father told OUinsider. "You can tell what was important when hiring a staff with Brent Venables. The realness was very evident and we loved that about OU."

Halton's father also told me that he was close with Tony Jefferson's family and that OU being the home of Kenny Stills and Brennan Clay was very "refreshing" to them due to Gracen being so far from home if was to choose OU in the end. They were aware of the Sooners success due to that trio and even dating back to Jamellle Holieway, with his father being a big fan of OU under Barry Switzerand The Boz.

Long story short, with Halton now decommitted from Oregon, things seems to be moving in the right direction for OU with the four-star.

Something to watch very closely over the next week or so.

*** Finally, the big JR Day weekend is ahead, but the Sooners have hosted some top level 2023 guys already.

Two being Denton (TX) Guyer talents in four-star QB commit Jackson Arnold and four-star DB Peyton Bowen.

1. Arnold is committed to the Sooners and will be back in Norman this coming weekend. That is big to have your 2023 class glue guy on-campus recruiting for you at big JR Day events like that.

2. Bowen visited the Sooners and that, obviously, was a shock with the Irish staff. Where things go from here is anyones guess, but Oklahoma is doing all they can to press the issue with Bowen to join his Guyer teammate in Norman and in the Sooners 2023 class.

I know that ND is still feeling like they are in a good position to keep Bowen in their class, but on the flip side, OU is feeling confident that they can continue to make inroads with the big-time defensive back. The visit to Norman was a really good one for both sides, and Bowen's relationship with DB coach Jay Valai is really good, so I don't think this battle will be done between the two programs for a while.

We will stay on top of that situation, but Bowen is still committed to ND and OU is doing all they can, including stopping by Guyer a few days after his unofficial, to piggyback off the stellar visit to Oklahoma.

Stay tuned there.

As for confirmed visitors? List is short at this time, but we are working on it some more:

Four-star Mustang (OK) ATH Jacobe Johnson

Four-star Norman (OK) CCS EDGE rusher Bai Jobe

Four-star Tulsa (OK) BTW Micah Tease

Four-star Denton (TX) Guyer QB Jackson Arnold -- OU COMMIT

Four-star Flower Mound (TX) Marcus WR Ashton Cozart

Fast-rising McCalester (OK) ATH Erik McCarty

We will keep adding names as we get them confirmed.

We ALL agree. That's why I said starter kits. Not every OU fan is saying that OU's 2022 defense is going to be the 85 Bears.

That said. The guy who coached Simmons, Travis Lewis, Curtis Loftin, and yes, Teddy Lehman is now back at OU and has clay to mold.

I'm sure OU hopes they "fail" as badly as well.

Hey, just wanted to remind anyone reading this board, that the former president of Oklahoma University "retired" after his fondling of male students working in the administrative offices became so flagarant that the university had no alternative other than to "retire" him.  Boomer, etc. Carry on.

To be clear, I think he was put out to pasture because he tanked the university's finances. To bring it back to sports, the repercussions for this may be the cause of the delay in OU and UT moving to the SEC. Fifty years later, people still don't remember to just follow the money.

But, to be clear, he fondled male students who worked in the ou administrative offices. Just to be clear. Clearly, he was the president of the university and he fondled boys at work. I think that's clear.

I got no beef with you, but facts are facts. Regardless of why he was retired. I just wanted to make sure no one forgot that President Boren, while he was president, fondled guys who were working in the ou admin offices. Now we should get back to ou recruiting and stop talking about the president of ou fondling male students in the adminstrative offices of the university.

Think he's coming off ACL injury... "Bentavious Thompson played at UCF with Dillon Gabriel and Jeff Lebby and had two productive seasons before sitting out 2021."

Oklahoma Lands Former UCF RB Bentavious Thompson

ByBryan Clinton      June 15, 2022

Oklahoma got a bit of help in the running back room going into the 2022 season as it appears that former UCF running back Bentavious Thompson is now with the Sooners.

This was a bit of a surprise for anyone not immediately involved in the Oklahoma program, as the news broke in relatively unorthodox fashion.

On Monday, the Oklahoma Football Twitter account posted this picture around 9:00 p.m. CT.

With a lot of new faces in the photo, Sooner fans quickly got to work piecing the puzzle together on who exactly was in the shot. A Twitter account called @StoopsBros quickly had a list out for who was present in the photo, including Thompson, who can be seen in a gray sweatshirt in the front left center of the image.

As soon as they could, Sooner fans jumped to their Google Search bars and tried to find out more on the newest addition the football team, and it didn’t take long to see that Thompson will be a valuable asset for the Sooners.

Thompson played 30 games for UCF between 2018-2020, recording 189 carries for 1,136 yards (6.0 ypc) and 13 touchdowns. It was announced ahead of the 2021 season that Thompson was no longer with the Knights program and in November of 2021 he entered the transfer portal.

Thompson spent a lot of time on the field with Sooners’ QB Dillon Gabriel and under the tutelage of OC Jeff Lebby, making him an immediate impact player if he remained in shape during his one season off.

FanNation All Sooners’ John Hoover says that Thompson confirmed being with OU, saying that he is “already here” in an email. Thompson is also listed in the student database as a senior in the College of Arts and Science.

It is unclear whether Thompson will walk-on at OU or if he will be on scholarship, but the Sooners have a strong unit there, with Eric Gray, Marcus Major, Jovantae Barnes, and Gavin Sawchuk on scholarship, plus walk-ons Tawee Walker, Jaden Knowles and Todd Hudson. Adding in a piece like Thompson gives the Sooners another experienced player that could be a difference-maker down the stretch.
