Agree with this.  Hell probably even last offseason.  He had a long window where he could have stepped back and hired a modern OC and let him do his job while the boosters bought 5 stars for him to play with.  After this past year and toxicity around the program he had no chance.  The only reason he hired Petrino is that there wasn't a single quality OC in America that wants to eventually be a HC that would take the job.  Petrino will be 62 when spring ball starts.  This is 1 last pay day before retirement for him.

Yes, a competent OC likely wins you the App State game and being 4-0 headed into Mississippi State is a different season. There’s easily one more win out there and even 7-5 and a “youth movement” is a different sell than 5-7 in terms of transfer hemorrhage. You’d lose some of these total mercs but it wouldn’t be the crazy number going on one.

Agreed on Petrino. This hire has all of the downside with little upside, he’s getting paid and doesn’t give AF.  I expect “Chief”-like results on the field, a step up from total incompetence that gives the Kool-Aid drinkers hope but nothing to really move beyond middle of the pack. He’s not a genius anymore, there will be low-effort, and he’ll be worse in terms of locker room culture.

Kliff will be in high demand as a OC at NCAA or NFL level, he doesn’t need to deal with Jimbo level control over an O that he wouldn’t want to run.  He should do a year in a TV gig and chum the waters, he will get something good.

The rationale behind Jimbo circling back to Petrino is super red-flag. If you interview for an C-suite level job and you disagree with the CEO in the interview over your level of responsibilities, you walk away. The CEO comes back and says “I’ve changed, baby”….. you know he’s gonna be unhappy and looking to meddle from day one.  You only take that job if the money is awesome and you absolutely do not care about the outcome or your future opportunities when things go bad.

Bobby! Come on down!

Kliff doesn’t like recruiting and quite frankly, he’s not very good at it. Can’t see him back in college.

honestly every coach should be working towards the Jimmy Johnson plan - get paid a ton of money to be on TV like 18x a year for the next 15 years

it's what McVay is about to do at age 36!! Kliff is 43 for what it's worth which seems insane to me.

You really don't need your OC being a stud recruiter.  An elite OC is a positive to recruiting even if he never recruits a single player.  Players will be drawn to the offense.  Norm Chow wasn't doing any recruiting at USC.  Position coaches and staff can carry that water.

He keeps failing upward. Had he been available last week, he'd likely be the unanimous choice for Speaker of the House.

Yep, the position coaches doing the hard work can just bring them by Koach Kool’s office, he tells a few war stories about the guys he coached in the league and what it’s like to be there.  Temperamentally, he’s a better fit for NCAA.

It tracks with the way we often do business, getting the Brits to do something we want to do on a smaller scale first. And I  am sure the Poles are brokering a lot of this stuff.

Think you got lost on this post, my man. Unless Brits is code for the A&M admin and the Poles in question are referencing the Glory Holes on campus in  college station.

He would tell you differently or at least that was his position last season.  Things can change as your options present themselves.
