Your unpopular music opinions

"Free Fallin'" was my first favorite song.  I was 4 when it came out.  It's a ridiculously simple song (it was the first chord progression I learned on guitar), but I wouldn't call it lazy.  It's probably Petty's toughest vocal.  It's a fucking great piece of songwriting.

It's over played.  John Mayer did a sappy cover of it.  I probably don't need to hear it again.  But I will, and it will always make me smile.

Maybe it was because my first exposure to the song was his singing a duet with Axl on the 1989 VMAs, but if you were just the right age when that song hit, you got it.  Then it was played to death, the video sucked, and we end up with Tom Cruise singing it in Jerry Maguire.  But I'd never go so far as to call it lazy.  But suffice it to say, Tom Petty wrote a lot of songs I like better and which have aged better.

I get that.  Some songs hit you at the right time in your life and they stay with you forever, even if they may not age well.

I was incredibly sad when Petty died, and like many I spent a couple days listening to a lot of his stuff.  Free Falling came on, and I let it play for a bit until I thought to myself, "Nope, still sucks," and skipped to the next track.

I will say however that I was lucky enough to see Tom Petty in Austin supporting his album Damn the Torpedos, way back in 1979 as a freshman at the Austin Opry House.  There was some fucking great writing on that Album.    Just listen...

Side one: Refugee, Here Comes my Girl, Even the Losers, Shadow of Doubt (complex kid), Century City, then Side two starts with Don't do me like That." last three songs are weak IMHO, but damn 6 great songs out of 9 is pretty awesome.  And I think Tom Petty's best writing. Plus Live you had American Girl, and Breakdown also in the set list.  I don't remember Free Falling, but I could be wrong.

Maybe one of you can say I am full of shit, so my opinion will fit in with the "unpopular" category.  I would not list Free Falling in my top Petty songs.  Hell a decent career could have been made off just the songs listed above had he stopped writing in 1979... So I forgive petty for Free Fallin'

Damn the Torpedoes is an all time great album.

Never seen that before, but it made me smile...  Axl had exactly *one* dance move, and by God, he was fucking doing it... mid tempo, rocker, barn-burner, slow ballad, whatever...   Here comes the Serpentine, people.

In fairness, it was exactly one more dance move than Tom.

sidis turned me on to "What makes this song stink," which is a pretty great series.

He did an episode on Train, and had a hard time picking which song to feature...

I can't believe it took you that long to cotton on to Finnerty.

I do have a bone to pick with this list though. No Calling All Angels. List is invalid.

My biggest concert regret, full stop, is not seeing TP&TH.

I'd say Here Comes My Girl gives a run for the money.  In Free Falling, Tom just belts out "Yeah I'm Freeeee!  Free Faaaling!"  The verses are pretty sleepy.

Here Comes My Girl is a good choice, but man it's tough to belt that "Freee-eee-eee" in tune.  IMO.

In the reverse of this, going to see Petty (while not my favorite concert ever) is the thing in my concert going career I'm the most glad I've done.  It was an amazing show though.  Went on my 25th birthday with a group of my real close friends, and Drive-By Truckers (which is collectively one of our favorite bands) opened.  Fucking glorious.

Yeah I was very close to walking up his last show at the Erwin Center and seeing what tix I could get. because the wife hadn't seen him way back when.  That ended up being a lot bigger mistake than I thought. Plus my buddy got good tix at the last minute fora $100 a pop.

I used to sing in a band.  Free Fallin' is death.  The high part in Here Comes My Girl is just for a second and reachable enough.  He had to hold that Freeeeeee, and then hit it again on the momentary.  Don't believe me?  Do it at karaoke.

The only higher level of karaoke death is Sweet Child O Mine because after you butcher the initial vocals, you have to figure out something to do during the guitar solo, only to follow that up with that where do we go part that you're not getting the crowd to help you out with at this point.  Then . . . you get to attempt that super high note.  Oh, it's always so brutal to watch.

I had countless opportunities to see Metallica back in the day.... mostly invited by girls I knew...   young stupid Loco never put 2 & 2 together... talk about regret.   furk!

I saw them when they did that stadium tour with GnR and Faith no More.  I went to Lollapalooza2 the day before.  We got there early and made our way up close (GA).  By the time Metallica started, I was on the rail, which kind of sucked because the stage was pretty high and it was hard to see a bit.  But anyway, so close was I that at some point, David Hetfield poured about half a bottle of Heineken in my mouth.  I gotta be honest, it was a nice gesture.  The show wasn't mind blowing.  I thought GNR put on a better show that night.

So in two days, I saw Ice Cube, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pearl Jam, Ministry, Sound Garden, Jesus and Mary Chain, with a side stage including Porno for Pyros, House of Pain, Cypress Hill, Stone Temple Pilots . . . (SLEEP) . . .  Faith No More, Metallica, and Guns n' Roses.  Out of all of that, the parts I can remember anyway, Metallica is the one I think about least . . . if it makes you feel better.

I'll pull out all the stops with Oh Darlin'. Brings the house down every time. I've also done the Time Warp with some success.

Also, doing some experiments, my conclusion is that I'm right and some of you are wrong.

The only Karaoke I'll attempt is Biz Markie - Just A Friend.   Not gonna lie, I'm pretty good... you'll get the whole crowd into it... or die alone on stage there is no in between.

That's my go-to jukebox song at the Tip Top in Ames prior to an ISU football game.  Never fails to get 100 drunk Midwesterners to sing the chorus loudly.

Does anyone remember that bar on 6th street that served the huge beers and had TV's all around and would occasionally blare in super loud video clips that dovetailed perfectly to the next song, in a thematic manner?

One of my favorite one of those bits was the Cliffhanger movie scene with Sly Stallone holding on to someone and watching the struggle and then right as the grip is loosened and the fingers slip....

"AND IM FREEEEEEEE, FREEEEEE FALLIN'' at a volume of 11.

That's peak Tim Petty to me.

I really, really think Van Halen is terrible.

Talented?  Sure, I guess.

There are a handful of bands that I hate that I don't think would fall in the "unpopular opinion" thread as I think there are a lot of folks that feel this way.  Think Kansas, Foreigner, Boston, Steve Miller Band etc.

Van Halen falls right in there with me.  Along with Bon Jovi

I can't get on your VH bus but everything else you said is spot on.

Axl actually pulled off a credible harmony late in the song.  Then he went rogue and Tom just kinda smiled.

They missed a golden opportunity to put Mike Campbell in a top hat and aviators, and even better, bring on Slash.

Meh I've never found any of Petty's stuff difficult to sing. I love his voice and style, though.
