Star Citizen

Anyone else playing this? I’ve been dabbling for about a yr and a half and have finally started to make a little progress. It’s just such a massive open universe and can get crazy costly with real world money. It has first person shooter, exploration & space dog fighting facets.

The first computer my oldest son bought himself when he was in high school was built specifically so it could play Star Citizen when it came out....That was around 2015 or 2016 and that computer has already been retired.

I'm convinced that the whole thing is a crowd-funding scam....Are they working on something? Sure.  Are they really trying to finish it? No way.

The link in the OP now says they are up to $403 Million in funding.

I can't decide what to call it.  Technically, there is a lot of content you can play. It's basically an early access or live service game.

But if a game has not technically been released, and is only in early access/beta testing, then the game can't be judged as a completed game.

They are changing up how they handle their roadmap, and what they will say they are working on or planning on delivering in the future, versus what's in the next update.

However, at the same time, we felt that while the focus should be on development progress, we also still saw value in showing players what features and content they could look forward to down the line, and when they could get their hands on them. Thus, the Release View remained. Instead of removing the Release View, we opted to add new functionality, where cards could be marked as Tentatively Planned or Committed. And in trying to preserve the legacy and maintain the precedence of the old Roadmap, we decided to still hold to a four-quarters-out Release View. In hindsight, after living with this new Public Roadmap for the past 6 quarters, we’ve come to realize that this was a mistake. It put too much attention on features that had a high probability of shifting around. It has become abundantly clear to us that despite our best efforts to communicate the fluidity of development, and how features marked as Tentative should sincerely not be relied upon, the general focus of many of our most passionate players has continued to lead them to interpret anything on the Release View as a promise. We want to acknowledge that not all of you saw it that way; many took our new focus and our words to heart and understood exactly what we tried to convey. But there still remains a very loud contingent of Roadmap watchers who see projections as promises. And their continued noise every time we shift deliverables has become a distraction both internally at CIG and within our community, as well as to prospective Star Citizen fans watching from the sidelines at our Open Development communications.

Rather than continuing to display release projections that carry a high percentage chance of moving (those multiple quarters out), we will no longer show any deliverables in the Release View for any patches beyond the immediate one in the next quarter. Even though we always added a caveat that a card could move, we feel now that it's better to just not put a deliverable on Release View until we can truly commit to it.

11 years in active development.  $430 million in funds.

I can understand why people are loud.

This is a huge scam right?

Maybe. Jury's still out if they'll actually deliver anything. For now it's jokingly called "used car salesman online." It may end up like Chronicles of Elyria, which WAS fraud. The guy in that case basically took the money, called it his salary, and kept that grift going for like 5-6 years before people started lawyering up, realizing that he never actually released anything real. It's a fascinating story, you can find the details on YouTube. The dude there is still trying to keep it going, even though he was exposed, funny stuff.
