Texas DB & LB Talk

Any info on why Ford and "Tuck" played so poorly against the run vs ULM ??

I've seen a couple positive remarks about Richardson's play Saturday -- and DMO played great.

Really need a lot better interior LB play Saturday or else Bama will find ways to exploit it.

From my untrained eye, Ford was in position to make a number of plays and just whiffed. He didn't seem to be out of position much, just didn't finish plays.

DTD looked fine.

Richardson looked fine in mop-up duty (19 snaps), but I don't think we want him playing any more than he already is. Him and Gbenda are pretty much coin flips to do their jobs correctly.

IT Coach Venables   Bama Game

That was the closest thing to the old UT defense’s in a long time. It was like the old saying—we got there because everybody wanted to get there. Even the guys on the bench wanted a shot at old number one. Once again injury knocked out a starter. D’Shawn Jamison (5) went down with a foot injury after almost picking off a curl route.

The LB’s played better than last week but still have warts in their game. Jaylan Ford (41) had a terrific sack and ten tackles. That’s ten more than last week. Diamonte Tucker-Dorsey (2) and David Gbenda (33) got some snaps but can’t seem to find the ball very often. DeMarvion Overshown (0) had a bunch of good hustle plays but still overshoots his gap or undercuts his pursuit too often. I will say this group pursued the ball with reckless abandon. Want-to makes everyone better.

The secondary played extremely well with two exceptions. The 80 yard TD was careless and unnecessary. The corner blitz and miss was the key in their last drive. I found no fault in Ryan Watts’ (6) blitz technique. Young is a great QB for a ton of reasons. Avoiding a bullet blitz was one athlete winning that particular play over another. Anthony Cook (11) had another good game except for the long td run. Jerrin Thompson (28) played well with some big hit tackles leading the charge. Jamier Johnson (31) played well except for giving too much cushion on one completion. Jaylon Guilbeau (13) had a poor angle attempt on a tackle and was replaced. Jahdae Barron (23) played well with two good tackles. Austin Jordan (4) had a nice game. All in all, this bunch flew to the ball better than I have seen in a long time. Their tackling has improved—not perfect but getting better.

Cook is playing really well. Lot of good tackling by the secondary which is odd to say.  Young guys looks good.

Jamier Johnson (soph) has really helped too.  Jerrin/Cook both played much better last Saturday, and Ford really stepped up his game after that long TD run by Bama.

IT's Coach V critical of LBs & DBs vs UTSA

The DE’s/OLB’s had chances to make plays but just never quite got there. The ILB’s had mixed reviews on pass coverage but finding the football/gap was not a reliable trait. The corners were very average against the short passing game of UTSA and poor when covering deep. The safeties were once again decent tacklers but still need better reactions against the pass.

The following still need work on the art of tackling. They seem to forget that any open field tackle is a good tackle—wrapping up is your best friend next to the sideline boundary, defensive play 101, of course.

Ford (41) shows a few signs but is a long way from being a bang-up good ILB. Gets lost at times.

DTD (3) had a lost in space and the trenches night. He couldn’t find the ball too often and was very late when he did.

Dorbah (32) had a chance to impress but found a way to stay home way too long.

Bush (43) is always active but lacks tracking talent. He does make a few plays though.

Blackwell (37) or Tapp (17) made a good kickoff tackle.

Cook (11) played well.

Jamison (5) had an ouch on a deep ball.

Watts (6) had two deep misses.

Thompson (28) had a nice game but still needs work on tackling.

Johnson (31) had two nice plays in relief.

Well that's about as nice a way of saying Bush should not be on the field in a competitive game environment.  What is it  with coaches and making obvious statements lmao... Jamison deserves major credit for responding to one of his biggest weaknesses and something UTSA was obviously attacking, his technique on in swinging slants.  If not for compensating his game and cutting off at least two critical completions against well thrown balls we give up another possibly 11 points.  Ford is bad at tackling in space, and he doesn't have much ceiling left to improve in that regard, he and DTD are still superior to what we had going most of last year though, I won't complain too much.  Giving the safeties the generic, had a nice game, isn't doing anyone any favors.  They were nowhere to be seen on deep attempts and any half decent passing attack will notice they don't have the range to help out watts or the other cbs, none of whom are truly capable of playing lockdown coverage.  The success of the defense depends on every unit playing at least solid, there is zero leeway for any guy to be out of sync, there is no athletic beast on the defense that can compensate.  Improvement from last year is massive, but don't expect to see many repeats of the Bama effort imo

Dunlap on Watts and Jamison

Ryan Watts needs to clean things up while D'Shawn Jamison comes in with excellent underlying metrics so far

TV color analysts and members of the Orangebloods message boards swoon over the size and length of CB Ryan Watts, but the fact is that he has some things to clean up. Watts allowed one coverage burn in this game (taking his season total to two in three games - or one per every 79 snaps, which is an unthinkable number). What's more, it could have been two burns in the UTSA contest had one bad play from Watts been called back due to a late-hit penalty from Barryn Sorrell. Watts has also had two missed tackles and one blown contain which cost Texas a TD versus Alabama.

Compared to D'Shawn Jamison, who, for some reason, some Longhorns fans seem to have somewhat soured on, Watts really needs to step up. Jamison is currently allowing a 25% completion rate when clearly targeted this season compared to the 50% of Watts. Jamison has only missed one tackle compared to Watts' two, has not blown a contain as Watts has and has not allowed a single coverage burn. Ryan Watts has had one PBU while Jamison has had 2 PBUs, one INT and one pass blow-up in targets clearly into his coverage.

Texas needs better LBs and safeties. Teams continue to attack those areas. Multiple times this past Saturday, both of those positions were in position to make plays on 4th down only for Smith to beat our guys in space. Namely, when he trucked Tucker-Dorsey at the 2 and carried him into the EZ, and on their last drive Cook came crashing out of control only for Smith to cut back and pick up a key 4th down.

Not sure if the current coaching staff will be able to bring in and develop players to make those winning plays.

It really is frustrating to not have any "true" playmakers on defense.  It is ridiculous that several players on defense at DB and LB aren't playing better.

  • Is Texas just terrible at player evals ?
  • Do our coaches just really suck at development ?
  • Is the defensive system too complicated for our dumbass players ?
  • Do the players not match the system ?
  • Are the calls for coverages (LBs & DBs) still not matched up with the fronts ?
  • Is the playcalling just terrible like Scipio Tex keeps saying... fucking 2 deep safeties in obvious running situations ?I
  • Why aren't we more aggressive on defense ??  Giving up a 5-7 play TD drive is still better than a 20 play TD drive.  FUCK

Still don't understand why more transfers with experience weren't pursued to help this shitty defense...

Sick of the pussy defenses that were called against Tech.  Tell those DBs and LBs we're gonna mix in some man coverage, so fuckin' MAN UP and cover those bitches -- do your fuckin' jobs!!!

We brought in Tuck, pursued Jaylan Moody, and a few others. Moody stayed at Bama and is starting, Sanders chose Arkansas and is playing really well for them. Brini is playing decently for them as well.

Tuck is playing poorly for us so far. He’s had an exceptionally rough last two games. He’s playing too tentatively for someone who’s already at a physical disadvantage.

Didnt help that Ovie got caved in on that play. HE still could have made the play, but odds were significantly less after Ovie decided to  feast on turf salad

Burke, Finkley, and Tapp need more playing time at the expense of Oghoufo and Sorrell. I think Sorrell can still be a solid rotational player, but Oghoufo is a lost cause.

Jamison has been targeted 20 times on the season, giving up 8 catches and producing 5 PBUs and 2 INTs. The 8 catches have produced 79 yards and no TDs. He has given up a QB rating of 12.9 when targeted. He gave up an atrocious 131.9 QB rating last year. :)

1 penalty

That int on the deep ball was awesome. No worries at all. Kinda weird looking at that play having confidence in a db has been rare

Seems like he gets shit on a bit here but seems like he’s playing very well. Certainly knows how to break up a pass.

More than a bit and it's always been bitchy and overwrought. He's had some conspicuously bad plays -- comes the territory as a DB -- but he's always been solid.
