Abbott being Abbott

"The Big Sort" kinda data are fascinating to me.  Matt Dowd started touching on this a long, long time ago with his book "Applebee's America."  But it's since been more fully hashed out by other pundits/writers.

Anyway, it is so weird to me that people uproot their families halfway across the country because of politics.  I mean, don't get me wrong-I'd leave a fascist or communist state in a minute.  And if you gotta move from one coast to another for a job or economics or to help sick family or whatever, I get that.  I've done it myself.

But I can't imagine pulling the kids outta grade school midway through the year and when they ask what's happening and why everything they know is at an end, to reply with, "Because we'll save $1800 on taxes.  And although you're not of child-rearing years, I want to make sure you can't get an abortion."  Here the kids are like, "Hey maybe we're moving to Texas 'cause Dad's gonna get a million dollar raise and Mom's gonna finally be able to pursue her dream of becoming a sculptor.  And we'll have all this land and a house at the beach!"  Then you find out at the family dinner meeting, "Nope, none of that kids.  But we will have cheaper car registration which will in turn fail to fund a reliable electric grid and I won't have to worry about what kinda funny people are in the bathroom with you."  How anti-climactic.

Not personally, but I do remember that one spoken phrase tripped the breaker. A breaker that was overloaded and ready to give up its ghost.

Do you know if Babbot has the authority to fire an individual teacher?

To fire?  Probably not.  To have Paxton sue?  Almost certainly.  Will it have merit?  It doesn't matter.

The GQP war against all public schooling is almost complete.

So Abbott ordered PUC and ERCOT to stop the rolling blackouts (or just blackouts), consequences be damned. The actual failure is with how he's appointed incompetent people to certain roles.

When you appoint incompetent people, the system runs ok when everything is normal. Basically its running by whatever operating manual is in place.  But put said incompetent person in an emergency and they have no ability to lead.

And as reminder the problem that is being discussed is how ERCOT allowed the electricity generation providers to charge top dollar when they still didn't require incentive to generate. Billions of dollars were transferred out of our pockets, via electricity providers, to the generating companies.

You know how you're paying more for electricity this year? Thank Greg for that when you see your invoice.

Can’t it just be “hi I’m investigating some Greg abbot bullshit.  Everything ok here?  No abuse?  Ok cool, thanks.  “

I likely have a much different and more negative opinion than most on this board regarding gender reassignment in children, but nonetheless, the policy itself from Abbott and Paxton is basically lawless and attempting to criminalize actions by executive decree.

The Family Code sections they cite are for abuse, neglect and sexual abuse of children.  Nothing in those Code sections explicitly define as abuse any of the things Abbott lists, and even worse, legislative attempts to define these things as abuse and/or to otherwise criminalize gender reassignment have all recently failed.  It’s not even an ambiguous area - we basically know these things aren’t illegal under current law, so they are creating a workaround since the legislature couldn’t pass actual law.  Which … is not how free societies work, at all.  And, yes, there are “both sides” points that be scored with some things Democrats do through the executive when they can’t get the laws to say what they want - immigration policies from the executive branch, etc. - but this has a much more punitive potential impact for a lot of people.

And the enforcement issues it raises are voluminous and completely unworkable - including prosecuting  “members of the general public” for failing to report … what exactly?  Everybody report to Big Brother next time you see a boy with long hair in the grocery store!

This is a blatant and scary overreach by state’s executive branch, regardless of one’s feelings about the underlying subject.   And all to help a couple of cretins with their next campaigns.  It’s pretty demoralizing, to say the least.

hopefully he walks... backpedd.... rolls this one back

Today was the first time I thought Abbott must really be afraid of the challenge from Huffines. Like maybe his internal polling shows he's got a tough fight in store for him on election day. Or this is just an attempt to copy the Trump playbook of do some heinous shit to change the media talking point away from the scandal you were just exposed on.

Dammit Greg, I'll bite.  What the fuck does "report on any trans kids you see" mean exactly?

Some 16 year old boy wearing makeup on stage?

Some 17 year old girl drives to school in a Subaru?

I assume we're only a semester away from genital lineups before gym class?

Don’t worry, Beto’s gonna come out and be like “hell yes we’re forcing your kid to get gender reassignment surgery” or something.

I have thoughts on such surgery at young ages as well that may even align with some of your thoughts, but regardless, I do know that it's not the rampant problem that Abbott and Paxton are trying to make it out to be, anymore than when Bathroom Dan Patrick was flipping out about who was using what bathrooms.

I feel like it'll just be another attack on public schools and public healthcare.

And also it's on such a small subset of people, that Abbott and Paxton feel safe that they can attack these kids and their families.

Why not all of those.

I don't think Huffines has the balls to mount a third party campaign (although I wish he would).

At this point, to me Huffines is just a stalking horse for DeSantis, and Huffines has praised DeSantis and mocked Abbott for trailing DeSantis.

I think it's all about trying to out-DeSantis/out-Florida DeSantis and Florida.

Someone upthread said companies keep coming to Texas.  Texas education is taking a massive hit.  Given it 5-10 years, but companies won't be coming to Texas because they will no longer be able to get well educated people in Texas.

I am so glad I am no longer in that shithole state.  It is mind blowing how bad it has gotten since January 20, 2017.

So where are all those dicks like @Incredulity @workswithseed @Immaculate Vibes who've been accusing Trudeau of being an authoritarian?

Nary a gotdam peep.

Well, no, because they are a bunch of cowards, and honestly, they are such shitstains of human beings that they probably are completely in agreement with this.  They are ok with authoritarians if they agree with what they are imposing on the public.

And then his people are going to text the fuck out of me, and I'll reluctantly go fill out 30 fliers to mail to new voters at some hipster event and convince myself he has a shot and it all matters.

We’re at the stage that it’s only about Abbott issuing exec orders to win votes from another crazy segment of the far right. He could care less if and when everything is struck down in a court.

I did my best to force Abbott into a run off. First time voting in a gop primary just to vote against some people. Felt good and bad at the same time.

After this news popped yesterday, my emotions ran the gamut from despair to rage. My head told me it was a lot of what has been mentioned above--political stunt, distraction measure, etc.

But oh my heart. I mean using children, teens, families as political pawns is nothing new....but my lord, oh the callousness and exploitation applied with no sense of compassion just hurts. Another crystal clear example of the cruelty is the point.

I remember reading something that stuck with me, a long time ago, how adolescents often experience the sensation that everyone is looking at them and yet no one is (seeing them for who they believe themselves to be). I can only imagine it is 10X magnified for a transgender youth. How can a young person not feel betrayed by the adults in the institutions that we, the people, erected to serve them and society (something we know not to be truly equal)? Children and teens need love, so in turn, they can be loving. But I guess, we shall turn our backs on that, and shun transgender youth and others for not fitting into some box we built to contain a tiny part of who humans are and we think they should be.

I joke (on this message board) and my children tease me about having a 'type.' (aka when watching actors onscreen). In reality, my type is kind. A kind person with the moral courage to be kind to others in the face of the worst of us is the type we should strive to be.

Greg Abbott is not that type.

What would you have him do about Fentanyl?  More war on drugs?  More border security, which is a federal function pretty much exclusively.

Well, John, if he can't do anything about it, why the FUCK did his campaign print up mock pill bottles with fentanyl facts?  Seems a waste of time and resources, and a diversion from real issues if he can't do anything about it, yes? If he CAN do something, then shouldn't he?

This is just such a shitty thing to do. Why are people so fucking afraid of transgendered people?

I get not doing gender reassignment surgery to a 9 year old but letting someone dress how they feel comfortable and use their proper pronouns costs nothing but some fucking decency and politeness.

Fuck Abbott. Out of all the shit to focus on this kind of political theater is just so stupid. Fuck all the mouth breathers that fall for this shit as well.
